This five star hotel in one of Bilbao's calm business and residential districts has a luxurious, almost gaudy design which attracts mainly couples on a city break and the occasional business traveller. The design, when considered at any one point in the hotel, seems tasteful and unique. However, when considering the hotel as a whole, the many different styles of design seem to give off more of a feeling of 'bazaar' than luxury hotel. Nevertheless, the establishment certainly provides a unique experience and some guests may even like the hotel more for the fact that it seems to have no consistent theme.

    Location 8.25 /10

Hotel Lopez de Haro is situated just a stone's throw from the riverfront in one of Bilbao's business districts. With a 10 minute walk to the Guggenheim, a 15 minute walk along the riverside to the old town, and a five minute walk to the main shopping street - 'Lopez de Haro', the hotel is brilliantly located for tourists wanting to visit the city. At the same time, the surrounding area is very calm and peaceful during the night - almost ensuring a sound night's sleep. Located just eight miles from the airport, the hotel can be easily reached by bus or by taxi.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel's 53 rooms are spread out over six floors, accessible by two gold lifts reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Each floor has a small relaxation space comprising balck, white and gold armchairs and coffee tables. All rooms have a monochrome colour scheme with odd splashes of colour here and there. As such, the majority of rooms have textured black and white wallpaper, grey carpets, crisp white sheets, black curtains (which are very convenient for blocking out the exterior light if you are an early sleeper) and a brightly coloured armchair or futon. This décor makes a nice difference from the many hotels nowadays that seem to equate luxury with minimalist design, even if it is a little 'busy' at times. The Junior Suite, whilst having a nice and romantic atmosphere for couples searching for a weekend escape, does not really boast that many extra benefits or amenities (aside from the Espresso machine and DVD player) to justify the elevated price. The Presidential Suite has a certain charm about it with its classical Spanish style and its light and airy character yet here too, the facilities and amenities fall a little short of luxury - such as the shower, which is rather small for a Presidential Suite.

    Overview 8.45 /10

Walking into Lopez de Haro, we were struck by the attention to detail in the lobby. From the large marble table with fresh flowers and pitchers of water and juice for parched guests tired from their journey to the clean, refreshing smell, the hotel clearly knows how to make a good impression. Walking through to the 'Moët and Chandon' champagne bar, the feeling of luxury is continued with soft red walls, a seating area in the style of a classic country living room (think hunting trophieson the wall and studded dark leather armchairs) and a large bar adorned with what seemed to be a hundred bottles of champagne. However, the clash of styles discussed above is also evident here with the red walls and pink bar. Nevertheless, the space certainly does have a cosy atmosphere going for it.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Moët and Chandon bar on the ground floor is in fact the 'reference point' for Moet in northern Spain, which explains the many champagne bottles and several ice buckets adorning the bar. This is a warm relaxing space which should be made the most of for enjoying a nice cocktail or two. To the left is a small restaurant space which has three services: from 7:30-10:30am, from 1:00-3:30pm and from 8:30-11:00pm. In Bilbao a lot of emphasis is placed upon local gastronomy and guests are often encouraged to eat outside of the hotel. However, intimate lighting and a good ambiance make the hotel restaurant a nice option for those who choose to stay local.

    To know

The hotel is part of the Ercilla chain, which has three hotels in the Basque Country - including one other in Bilbao. The company claims that Lopez de Haro is the right option for those searching for a 'fashionable, luxury, boutique' hotel. Rather, the main highlight for us was the service provided. Good, old-fashioned discretion and attentiveness are on the agenda here. This, combined with the small size of the hotel make guests feel like they are not just another client in a database.

This grand hotel in the classic Basque style is all about service and luxury. Situated on Plaza Moyúa - right in the centre of town - the hotel's original façade stands tall and proud amongst other classical buildings such as the Palacio de Chavarri, which is now a governmental building. Elegant archways, sparkling chandeliers, and grand winding staircases characterise this hotel, which is often the top choice for politicians or celebrities when staying the Bilbao for events such as the BBK music festival. When this is not the case however, Carlton welcomes a whole range of guests, from tourists to couples on a romantic break, to families. In contrast to some of the more recent 'design' hotels on the riverside, Hotel Carlton can offer guests a real taste of 'old Bilbao', with certain original features dating back to 1926 when the hotel was first opened.

This Best Western hotel located on Bilbao's riverfront just behind the Guggenheim seems to be stuck in the days when Bilbao was the Basque country's largest industrial city, with its brown brickwork, high-rise façade and the grey paved area leading clients to the entrance. Business clients just looking for a base to spend a few days could be happy here, but frankly the hotel does not match the standards set by its competitors and therefore has little to offer families, couples or solo travellers, who could easily find a boutique design, or simply a more modern hotel for more-or-less the same price.

Hotel Abando is the sister hotel to the five star Hotel Carlton owned by the same chain just a 10 minute walk away. Whilst Carlton attracts a wide range of guests, Abando caters more to business clients. A large marble entranceway greets guests upon arrival, with staff on hand ready to take your luggage to your room. Although the decoration and facilities may not be quite as luxurious as Carlton, service is an equally high priority here and all rooms are immaculately clean. The décor varies a little from floor to floor, yet the majority of rooms have been decorated in a warm (if slightly dated) fashion.

The Gran Hotel Domine seems to be trying to capitalise on Bilbao's relatively recent reputation as a hub of art and design, with its mix of gigantic sculptures, furniture resembling biting lips and original works by Javier Mariscal - a Spanish artist whose film 'Chico and Rita' was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. However, this hotel will not be welcoming budding artists on a student or backpackers' budget anytime soon. Rather, 70 percent of its clients are travelling on business. Whilst the hotel boasts a prime location just opposite the Guggenheim museum, it doesn't have much to offer tourists searching for a taste of the 'old Bilbao'. Couples wanting a relaxing city break would appreciate the large bath tub with views of the museum and the hills surrounding the city, as well as the Michelin star restaurant on the top floor, but families are likely to feel out of place here. The establishment occasionally receives celebrities during the summer months for large events such as the BBK festival, which has previously featured the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Rammstein and Fatboy Slim.

This gorgeous boutique hotel is ideally situated just a five minute walk from the Guggenheim. A feeling of warmth and luxury (without being pretentious) sweeps over guests as they walk into the hotel - which is originally and tastefully decorated with mannequins in the window, potted plants at reception, and bright and colourful walls. The hotel is ideal for couples wanting a unique and romantic experience due to the beautiful design and the spa and wellness therapy on the lower ground floors. Families are equally welcome but children may not necessarily appreciate the subtle touches that make this hotel special, such as vintage style brown leather chairs in the bar and a relaxing reading room on the first floor.

This modern hotel with its original facade (the building used to be a theatre) and completely renovated interior nicely strikes the balance between old and new Bilbao. Attracting mainly a family clientele, the hotel - whist remaining elegant and sophisticated - is still very child friendly. The contemporary rooms could also suit couples searching for a functional room for their stay in Bilbao, although the hotel lacks that special character which often transforms your stay from city break to romantic getaway. The deep and calming colours of red, grey and mahogany characterise the hotel - which has 97 rooms and unusually starts on level two of the building (the first two levels being a casino).

Walking into Ercilla hotel, the heady black and red décor in the reception and lobby area creates a warm and cosy atmosphere, yet this is not reflected in the service, as we found out when no one was manning the reception desk at the time of our arrival. The black and red colour scheme is continued throughout the hotel with black flooring in the restaurant, white and black sofas in the lobby and a black marble effect in certain bathrooms. The hotel's main clientele is businessmen looking for a base for a short stay in Bilbao. Families and couples would be equally welcome but the rooms lack any real sense of romance and there is little to keep the kids entertained in the form of play areas or colouring books.
