This gorgeous boutique hotel is ideally situated just a five minute walk from the Guggenheim. A feeling of warmth and luxury (without being pretentious) sweeps over guests as they walk into the hotel - which is originally and tastefully decorated with mannequins in the window, potted plants at reception, and bright and colourful walls. The hotel is ideal for couples wanting a unique and romantic experience due to the beautiful design and the spa and wellness therapy on the lower ground floors. Families are equally welcome but children may not necessarily appreciate the subtle touches that make this hotel special, such as vintage style brown leather chairs in the bar and a relaxing reading room on the first floor.

    Location 7.49 /10

Situated almost exactly halfway between the Guggenheim and the Fine Arts Museum, Miró is also just a five minute walk from the main shopping street - 'Ercilla'. A 20 minute walk along the riverside will take you to the old town, where you can find a variety of bars and restaurants to sample Bilbao's famous pinxtos or a glass of Txakoli - an easy-drinking dry white wine from the region. With eight miles between the hotel and Bilbao Airport, guests can take either a taxi or a bus to reach their destination relatively quickly.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

Hotel Miró's rooms have a rather boring minimalistic design with white walls, sheets and blinds and black carpets throughout. Nevertheless, comfy mattresses, large flat screen televisions with DVD players and well stocked minibars still make for a comfortable stay. The main focus point of each room therefore, is the bathroom, which has beautiful black marble flooring and walls, a walk-in shower, and Gilchrist & Soames hospitality products. There are also Master and Junior Suites available - both of which have spectacular views over the city as well as extra space for relaxation (moreover, the Master Suite has a bath in the room for added romance!). Aside from the suites, guests can choose from Urban Single, Urban Double, City Double, City Privilege and City Deluxe. The main difference between city and urban rooms is simply that city rooms face the street, whilst the difference between City Double and Privilege on the one hand, and Deluxe on the other, is the complementary bathrobes and a view of the Guggenheim.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The lobby's zen and soothing atmosphere is reflected in the staff's attitude, who seem in no rush to check you in but who are more than willing to provide you with information on Bilbao and the best areas to visit. The lobby area continues into the hotel bar, which offers free soft drinks and the newspapers of the day to be read on the large leather sofas. On the first floor can also be found a reading room offering a wall unit fully stocked with books and leather armchairs matching the sofas downstairs that look as if they may suck you in if you stay too long!

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Leading off from reception is the 'courtesy bar' where guests can help themselves to any soft drinks free of charge. This calming area is beautifully decorated with the hotel's signature polished black marble floor, brown leather chairs and wooden tables, and has a well-stocked bar offering soft drinks including teas and coffees which is a nice touch for Brits, who will struggle to find any hotel rooms with hot drinks making facilities in Bilbao. Just to the side of the bar are two large leather sofas with coffee tables full of magazines and books - a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The bar is a haven of relaxation and the 'help yourself' motto manages to make the area feel more like the living room of a friend you are visiting, rather than a boutique design hotel. Upstairs on the first floor is the breakfast room, which offers a standard continental breakfast (with the addition of tortillas and pinxtos) between the hours of 7:30 and 11:00am.

    Spa

On the lower ground floors of Hotel Miró are to be found a small gym for guests' use between the hours of 7:00am and 11:00pm, containing all the usual machines such as treadmills, bikes, stepping and rowing machines, as well as exercise mats and fitness balls. Neighbouring the gym is a massage suite with one private room containing two massage tables and a relaxation area to enjoy a tea after your treatment. These massages must be booked in advance and menus are available either at reception or in your room. For an alternative way to relax there is an aqua wellness centre which can be booked for private use by guests and which has a steam room, a hydrotherapy shower and a hydromassage bath.

    To know

The hotel offers a courtesy bar, allowing guests to help themselves to soft drinks in the bar leading off from the lobby. There are also 'top up' cards available at reception, which allow you to use the vending-style machine for wine. Whilst this may appear a little tacky and some guests would inevitably prefer good old fashioned bar service, there is no denying the convenience of the set-up. The lower ground floors hold an aqua wellness center with hydromassage and steam baths, a wellness center offering private massages, and a small gym.

This Best Western hotel located on Bilbao's riverfront just behind the Guggenheim seems to be stuck in the days when Bilbao was the Basque country's largest industrial city, with its brown brickwork, high-rise façade and the grey paved area leading clients to the entrance. Business clients just looking for a base to spend a few days could be happy here, but frankly the hotel does not match the standards set by its competitors and therefore has little to offer families, couples or solo travellers, who could easily find a boutique design, or simply a more modern hotel for more-or-less the same price.

Actually open since 1965, Villa de Bilbao underwent a complete renovation in 2013, and as such it now has fresh, contemporary décor throughout, complete with shiny marble flooring in the lobby, brand new springy mattresses in every room and effective, soundproofed walls to ensure guest's tranquility. This five star hotel in one of Bilbao's calm business and residential districts has a luxurious, almost gaudy design which attracts mainly couples on a city break and the occasional business traveller. The design, when considered at any one point in the hotel, seems tasteful and unique. However, when considering the hotel as a whole, the many different styles of design seem to give off more of a feeling of 'bazaar' than luxury hotel. Nevertheless, the establishment certainly provides a unique experience and some guests may even like the hotel more for the fact that it seems to have no consistent theme.

The Gran Hotel Domine seems to be trying to capitalise on Bilbao's relatively recent reputation as a hub of art and design, with its mix of gigantic sculptures, furniture resembling biting lips and original works by Javier Mariscal - a Spanish artist whose film 'Chico and Rita' was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. However, this hotel will not be welcoming budding artists on a student or backpackers' budget anytime soon. Rather, 70 percent of its clients are travelling on business. Whilst the hotel boasts a prime location just opposite the Guggenheim museum, it doesn't have much to offer tourists searching for a taste of the 'old Bilbao'. Couples wanting a relaxing city break would appreciate the large bath tub with views of the museum and the hills surrounding the city, as well as the Michelin star restaurant on the top floor, but families are likely to feel out of place here. The establishment occasionally receives celebrities during the summer months for large events such as the BBK festival, which has previously featured the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Rammstein and Fatboy Slim.

This modern hotel with its original facade (the building used to be a theatre) and completely renovated interior nicely strikes the balance between old and new Bilbao. Attracting mainly a family clientele, the hotel - whist remaining elegant and sophisticated - is still very child friendly. The contemporary rooms could also suit couples searching for a functional room for their stay in Bilbao, although the hotel lacks that special character which often transforms your stay from city break to romantic getaway. The deep and calming colours of red, grey and mahogany characterise the hotel - which has 97 rooms and unusually starts on level two of the building (the first two levels being a casino).
