This modern hotel with its original facade (the building used to be a theatre) and completely renovated interior nicely strikes the balance between old and new Bilbao. Attracting mainly a family clientele, the hotel - whist remaining elegant and sophisticated - is still very child friendly. The contemporary rooms could also suit couples searching for a functional room for their stay in Bilbao, although the hotel lacks that special character which often transforms your stay from city break to romantic getaway. The deep and calming colours of red, grey and mahogany characterise the hotel - which has 97 rooms and unusually starts on level two of the building (the first two levels being a casino).

    Location 7.75 /10

Situated in central Bilbao near some lovely architectural buildings such as the Palacio de la Disputacion Foral and the Teatro Campos Elìseos, Sercotel Coliseo is also just a 10 minute walk to the old town - which has all the best bars and restaurants. The famous Guggenheim Museum is also within walking distance, as is the main shopping street 'Ercilla'. Located 8 miles from the airport, the hotel is easily accessible by bus or taxi.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

Sercotel Coliseo has six different kinds of room: Standard, City, Double (with optional sofabed for children), Superior Double, Family and Junior Suite. As the hotel was only opened in 2011, all rooms are still in brilliant condition, are very clean and well kept, and have a modern and contemporary design. However, this contemporary design may seem a little cold to some, with its white and grey walls and bright white lights. Traditional guests could therefore be disappointed by the almost 'clinical' feel of some rooms. Nevertheless, all rooms are well equipped with storage space, minibars and safes, and the beds are large and comfortable. Somewhat strangely, the bathrooms have a much warmer feeling than the bedrooms, with their dark walls and floors, well lit mirrors, and pristine white showers.

    Overview 8.20 /10

Walking into the hotel can seem a little confusing as there is no reception desk or lobby in sight. This is because they are located on the second floor, which can be reached with a quick trip up in the lift. Here the spotless dark wooden floor sweeps through to the reception area, with its large curved desk to greet guests with its multilingual staff (who always appreciate nevertheless any effort made to speak Spanish or Basque). Unfortunately, there are a few rooms leading off directly from the reception area, which could get a little noisy during 'check-in'/'check-out' hours. All rooms are accessible via two lifts and certain rooms are allocated as 'smoking rooms' so make sure you specify that you don't want to stay in one of these if you are a non-smoker.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

Leading off from the reception area is the hotel's breakfast room and relaxation area which doubles up as a bar. With an extensive buffet stretching along the far wall, guests can indulge their gourmand side here between the hours of 7:00 and 10:30am. Whilst the seating area here is nothing special, on the other side of the room are a few nice suede grey sofas facing a large flat screen television and a (sparsely stocked) bookcase. To serve guests here, there is a small unpretentious bar in the corner. Drinks can also be enjoyed on the terrace, which is a nice outdoor space located in the central court of the hotel with lovely woven 'garden-style' furniture. As the terrace is surrounded by the four walls of the hotel, it is a very calm space with very little background noise. Although the hotel does not officially have its own restaurant, it does have a partnership with the Casino restaurant on the lower floors of the building, which offers reasonably priced menus for guests.

    To know

Before opening its doors as a hotel, Sercotel Coliseo was known as Teatro Coliseo Albia - a theatre which was designed by Rafael Fontán and opened in 1916. The theatre survived many disasters such as flooding and fires, and welcomed stars as famous as Luciano Pavarotti and Alfredo Kraus. The building became a hotel in 2011, yet it protected the beautiful architecture by keeping the façade of the theatre - which many tourists still come to visit today.

One of the Silken chain's many hotels in the Basque Country, Indautxu caters primarily for business clients, as is clear from the 11 meeting rooms situated around the hotel. Nevertheless, Indautxu is equally welcoming to families and couples simply in Bilbao for a holiday or short break. Simple, clean, crisp and contemporary décor characterises the hotel, with beautiful polished cream flooring and spot lighting in the lobby, reception and bar.

Walking into Ercilla hotel, the heady black and red décor in the reception and lobby area creates a warm and cosy atmosphere, yet this is not reflected in the service, as we found out when no one was manning the reception desk at the time of our arrival. The black and red colour scheme is continued throughout the hotel with black flooring in the restaurant, white and black sofas in the lobby and a black marble effect in certain bathrooms. The hotel's main clientele is businessmen looking for a base for a short stay in Bilbao. Families and couples would be equally welcome but the rooms lack any real sense of romance and there is little to keep the kids entertained in the form of play areas or colouring books.

This five star hotel in one of Bilbao's calm business and residential districts has a luxurious, almost gaudy design which attracts mainly couples on a city break and the occasional business traveller. The design, when considered at any one point in the hotel, seems tasteful and unique. However, when considering the hotel as a whole, the many different styles of design seem to give off more of a feeling of 'bazaar' than luxury hotel. Nevertheless, the establishment certainly provides a unique experience and some guests may even like the hotel more for the fact that it seems to have no consistent theme.

This gorgeous boutique hotel is ideally situated just a five minute walk from the Guggenheim. A feeling of warmth and luxury (without being pretentious) sweeps over guests as they walk into the hotel - which is originally and tastefully decorated with mannequins in the window, potted plants at reception, and bright and colourful walls. The hotel is ideal for couples wanting a unique and romantic experience due to the beautiful design and the spa and wellness therapy on the lower ground floors. Families are equally welcome but children may not necessarily appreciate the subtle touches that make this hotel special, such as vintage style brown leather chairs in the bar and a relaxing reading room on the first floor.

This small hostel-style hotel is located a little outside of the main tourist area of Bilbao, but still within the city itself. The hotel calls itself a 'photography boutique hotel', and whilst guests shouldn't expect luxury facilities or particularly beautiful rooms, this small hotel is good value for money for young travellers booking a short stay in Bilbao. The service is friendly and efficient and the reception staff speaks fluent English.

Hotel Abando is the sister hotel to the five star Hotel Carlton owned by the same chain just a 10 minute walk away. Whilst Carlton attracts a wide range of guests, Abando caters more to business clients. A large marble entranceway greets guests upon arrival, with staff on hand ready to take your luggage to your room. Although the decoration and facilities may not be quite as luxurious as Carlton, service is an equally high priority here and all rooms are immaculately clean. The décor varies a little from floor to floor, yet the majority of rooms have been decorated in a warm (if slightly dated) fashion.

The Gran Hotel Domine seems to be trying to capitalise on Bilbao's relatively recent reputation as a hub of art and design, with its mix of gigantic sculptures, furniture resembling biting lips and original works by Javier Mariscal - a Spanish artist whose film 'Chico and Rita' was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. However, this hotel will not be welcoming budding artists on a student or backpackers' budget anytime soon. Rather, 70 percent of its clients are travelling on business. Whilst the hotel boasts a prime location just opposite the Guggenheim museum, it doesn't have much to offer tourists searching for a taste of the 'old Bilbao'. Couples wanting a relaxing city break would appreciate the large bath tub with views of the museum and the hills surrounding the city, as well as the Michelin star restaurant on the top floor, but families are likely to feel out of place here. The establishment occasionally receives celebrities during the summer months for large events such as the BBK festival, which has previously featured the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Rammstein and Fatboy Slim.

This grand hotel in the classic Basque style is all about service and luxury. Situated on Plaza Moyúa - right in the centre of town - the hotel's original façade stands tall and proud amongst other classical buildings such as the Palacio de Chavarri, which is now a governmental building. Elegant archways, sparkling chandeliers, and grand winding staircases characterise this hotel, which is often the top choice for politicians or celebrities when staying the Bilbao for events such as the BBK music festival. When this is not the case however, Carlton welcomes a whole range of guests, from tourists to couples on a romantic break, to families. In contrast to some of the more recent 'design' hotels on the riverside, Hotel Carlton can offer guests a real taste of 'old Bilbao', with certain original features dating back to 1926 when the hotel was first opened.

This little three star hotel right in the centre of Bilbao's old town is characterised by a distinctly Spanish décor theme, with patterned woodwork in the bedrooms, green marble tiling in the lobby, warm terracotta wallpaper, and peach and cream tiling in the bathrooms. Although not the best in the region for mod cons and design, Tryp has very friendly service and is one of the only hotels to be situated right in the old town (all the rest are pensions). As such, it mainly attracts guests simply wanting a prime location rather than top quality facilities. There is a nice atmosphere for families and groups of travellers here, whilst couples are equally welcome but they may miss those luxury touches that often make for a romantic getaway.
