The Pearl Beach will seduce you with its location, comfort and decor; it is the second hotel to be granted the prestigious label, "Leading Hotels of the World". Impeccable service, large, generously appointed bungalows and a magnificent setting between coconut palms and lagoon: It is difficult to choose between the "garden" bungalows with private pool or the superb stilted bungalows.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel is 5 miles from Vaitape and the airport. Expect 15 minutes by boat.

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

Wherever you are - in a stilted bungalows, on the beach or in the gardens, comfort and spaciousness are present. Each category has its own assets and you may have trouble deciding which one is best for your needs. the "stilted" accommodation is superb and is anchored in shallow sandbar. The style and decor make extensive use of exotic materials: bamboo, pandanu, kohu wood... The "beach" bungalows have a large outdoor bathroom with a double basin and jacuzzi, arranged in the middle of a mini-garden, a very beautiful bedroom, a lounge (which can be closed off with sliding panels) and a large terrace overlooking the beach. Finally, the "garden" bungalows have a very good size and, above all, a private space including a little garden, a terrace fitted out with deckchairs, a"gazebo" to take a shady nap and a beautiful outdoor jacuzzi Finally, all rooms have a large range of facilities including an LCD television. Our only remark is that air-conditioning is a bit difficult to adjust.

    Overview 9.45 /10

The Pearl Beach lies in a large park with many coconut palms on Tevairoa coral island to the northwest and two steps from the airport. The architecture and design of the hotel is perfect. The bungalows are integrated into their environment and the beach offers a magnificent view of the lagoon and Bora Bora terrain. The Pearl was built in 1998 and is still impeccable. It has 50 stilted bungalows, 10 bungalows on the beachfront, and 20 in the park. The common areas have been well conceived and have refined decor. Restaurants and bars are located h?gher so the view of the lagoon and the hotel large pool are not compromised. In brief, a very beautiful building which certainly deserves its 5 stars.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

High on the hotel grounds, the Tevairoa restaurant is a very pleasant and cosy space where it is enjoyable to sit and watch the sunset at the end of the day or to relax in the evening under the fine lighting. Here you can have breakfastsand lunche. The cuisine is "gastronomic" with French specialities and, of course, Tahitian cuisine focusing on fish and New Zealand meat. For breakfast (complete meal, dish of the day or salad), the "Miki Miki" is near the swimming pool and offers Italian specialties. It is possible to have dinner there.

    Beach 8.70 /10

The Pearl beach is one of the most pleasant beaches in Bora and is in the shape of an arc bordered with coconut palms, deckchairs, mattresses, and sunshades. It offers a superb clear view of the main island and many small coral islands. The hotel offers an assortment of water sports equipment: sail board, ski jet, and a permanently installed diving club. All activities on the island offered by different providers are also offered by an small agency located near the reception.

    Latest development:
The "Manea Spa" has just been named one of the "Leading Spas of the World" (January 2007).

The Pearl, which belongs to a hotel chain of hotels settled on numerous islands of the archipelago already has the "Leading Hotels of the World" label. The hotel has developed a coral relocation program (nurseries) in collaboration with an expert in marine biology. Clients can make a submarine trail by renting a "speaking tuba" and explore wildlife species and undersea flora which populate lagoons on their own. Finally it has a series of beach bungalows which are designed to accommodate couples with kids.

The Maitai Polynesia is one of the hotels of Bora Bora which makes the accommodation on this pearl of the Pacific better value. Nicknamed the pearl of the Pacific, Bora Bora is a magnificent island where tourism is costly, thus putting off less wealthy travellers who cannot afford its luxury accommodation, even for an overnight stay. Fortunately, the main island has a few hotels of intermediary standard, which now compete and bring down their prices when the number of guests is low. The Maitai is one of them. It is therefore one of the hotels you should keep in mind if you would like to see Bora Bora without spending a fortune, while still enjoying the beauty of the lagoon.

The St. Regis is one of the finest luxury hotels Bora Bora has to offer. Located on a motu facing the east coast of Bora Bora, the estate is spacious (with 42-acre grounds) and double-fronted (facing both the ocean and the lagoon) and it has a spa alongside the lagoon (complete with a small private beach), several swimming pools, a total of 91 villas either on the motu or on stilts, some beautiful gardens, and, to top it all off, an elegant ambience. The only downside is the restaurants, which are over-priced, but then you could always head over to the main island of Bora Bora for lunch (a shuttle service is provided during the day, but this will incur an additional charge).

In our view, the Temanuata Village is too expensive for the quality of the accommodation and the services on offer. This aspect will come out in our commentary, but beyond these fee-related considerations, there is something that you should know about Bora Bora: it is currently a better idea to stay in a three-star hotel than in a guest house or a bed and breakfast. As hotels are offering all sorts of different offers at the moment to attract tourists, which is not the case with the local guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Let's hope that these establishments soon pick up on the trend, because so far they are the most expensive form of accommodation in Polynesia.

This superb and innovative hotel is one to remember, if only for its thalassotherapy centre, (known as a 'thalasso and spa'), which is a true haven of well-being, with water that has been drawn from a depth of 3,000 ft, off the coast of Bora Bora. As this seawater is pumped at very cold temperatures (5° C), it is also used for the hotel's air-conditioning system (communal areas and villas), and contributes to reducing the hotel's energy consumption and hence its environmental impact. The Intercontinental Thalasso also offers the luxury of accommodating its guests in villas a free shuttle is available which takes guests to Bora Bora's other Intercontinental hotel, the Moana. This trip gives you the opportunity to visit Pointe Matira peninsula, on Bora Bora's main island.

As Bora Bora is very well-known and sometimes criticised for its inordinate number of hotels (even though there are only fifteen or so on the main island and motus), it could be taken for the Venice of tropical islands: its hotels are beautiful and the natural setting is superb. The enchanting, green island rises high out of the superb blue lagoon encircling it, while the hotels blend in with the surroundings (like in Venice) and make for a superb holiday destination. As this kind of holiday comes at a price, the Moana, which is next to Matira beach on the main island, is to be recommended for its pleasant accommodation and traditional, friendly atmosphere. Indeed, it is the ideal starting point to explore the whole of the island of Bora Bora.
