The Maitai Polynesia is one of the hotels of Bora Bora which makes the accommodation on this pearl of the Pacific better value. Nicknamed the pearl of the Pacific, Bora Bora is a magnificent island where tourism is costly, thus putting off less wealthy travellers who cannot afford its luxury accommodation, even for an overnight stay. Fortunately, the main island has a few hotels of intermediary standard, which now compete and bring down their prices when the number of guests is low. The Maitai is one of them. It is therefore one of the hotels you should keep in mind if you would like to see Bora Bora without spending a fortune, while still enjoying the beauty of the lagoon.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel is located on one end of the beach of Pointe Matira, in the direction of Anau. One part of the estate is on the seafront and the other part stands against the foothills. Vaitape is 5 and a half mi from the hotel, wheras the airport, on Motu Mute, is 10 mi away. Whether your transfer is organized by the hotel or by yourself, there will be two different stages to your trip: a boat ride from the airport to Vaitape (the 15-minute ride is free), then, either a minibus or taxi ride from Vaitape to the hotel (15 minutes, ?17).

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The hotel has a total of 74 guestrooms, divided into 20 'lagoon' rooms, 7 'beach' bungalows and 19 'stilt' bungalows, with these three categories having at least a view of the sea; and then 28 'garden' rooms, with a furnished balcony, which the 'lagoon' accommodation also has. The view of the tropical gardens is a very attractive one, without being as spectacular as the view of the lagoon beyond the green vegetation and stilt bungalows. The island in the centre of the lagoon is the Motu of the Sofitel hotel of the same name - a private islet. As for the surface area of the accommodation, the rooms are 10 sq ft, and some of them have a sofa which can also be used as a sofa-bed for an extra person to sleep in. However, most of the rooms have a maximum capacity of two guests. Their equipment is the same as that found in the bungalows: a television, a telephone, a minibar, a safe and air-conditioning. As for the bathroom, it is equipped with a shower, a hair-dryer and 20 ml 'Sorbet' hospitality products. The bungalows are on the other side of the road: the most pleasant ones being the 'beach' ones at the end of the row, or the 'stilt' bungalows at the end of the pier. As the pier is close to the beach, the water level under the stilts is not very deep and there aren't many fish. Nothing should stop you, however, from swimming further out, where the deck of the 'stilt' bungalows is. Beware of the boats, however. The interior of the 'beach' and 'stilt' bungalows enables a maximum of three guests to be accommodated, thanks to the sofa. The terrace is covered with wood and opens out onto the lagoon, or the beach, for the 'beach' category bungalows.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Maitai was built in 1999 on the hillside, first of all, and later, on the beach. The bungalows on stilt were added later, in 2000, so the estate now stretches over both sides of the coastal road. The reception is located on the hillside, in a 'fare' type of building, with a pandanus-thatched roof and a varnished wood reception counter decorated with a Polynesian mural. There is a small adjacent lounge and the restaurant Haere Mai, on the other side. You will have to walk out of this main building and across the hillside terraced gardens to get to the rooms. The first building houses the 'garden' rooms whereas the 'lagoon' rooms are located a little higher up, in two adjacent buildings. Back to the road, which has to be crossed to get to the beach or the second restaurant, the Tama'a Matai, which means 'enjoy your meal' in Polynesian. On the side of the beach, the bungalow accommodation offers two different categories: 'beach' (view of the island) and 'stilts' (view of the lagoon).

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

Breakfast is served at the Haere Mai, in a fare overlooking the garden. It is a continental feast of pastries, bread, cheese, cold cuts, cereals and fresh fruit. For lunch and dinner, you can then go to the restaurant near the beach, the Tama'a Maitai. Its tables overlook one of the creeks and the restaurant is open to the hotel guests and the public. Local dishes are served at moderate prices: Raw fish in coconut milk costs ?15 and mahi-mahi (dolphin-fish) in a sauce (a different one everyday) costs ?17. Whereas meat and seafood are more expensive, pizzas are a lot cheaper (from ?11). As the setting is as pleasant as the content of your plate, you should order your meals according to your budget. The restaurant provides non-stop service from lunch time to dinner time. The Haere Mai is open in the evening, but not always, depending on the season. In any case, it is in this restaurant that Polynesian theme nights are organised, with a buffet and traditional dance shows

    Beach 7.70 /10

The Maitai is on the tip of Pointe Matira, which is not the prettiest location. However, this downside is relative. Instead of stretching over vast expanses, the sand sculptures the coast into three 33-foot wide, 165-230-ft long creeks, lined with coconut trees. You will therefore not have all the room in the world and there isn't a great number of deckchairs either. However, guests accommodated in 'stilt bungalows' usually sunbathe on their terrace, as do those accommodated in beach bungalows, as they have a view of the lagoon. Once you are in the water, you will have to go around the stilts to do snorkelling or go out on a kayak to get away from the coast a bit. All the equipment is lent by the hotel. These activities are best enjoyed in the morning before it gets too hot, and at a time when the lagoon takes on a stunning shade of pink. When you want to take a swim, remember to put your plastic sandals on, or rubber slip-ons because of the coral in the water.

    To know

The coast road divides the estate into two parts. On the hill side, you will find the reception, the breakfast restaurant and the bedrooms spread across the various buildings. On the sea side, you will find the second restaurant (open for lunch and dinner), the beach and the bungalows on stilts - there is therefore no accommodation category that will spare you from crossing the road. This is a moderate inconvenience, however: the traffic is low during the day and almost inexistent at night time.
    Accommodation tip:
The bungalows on stilts are quite close to one another, and the beach bungalows overlook the small and busy beach, so you may as well book a simple room, preferably with a view of the lagoon. Yet, those overlooking the gardens are perfectly pleasant too, and cheaper. Moreover, the hotel has special reductions for families: two adults with one or two children pay for their own accommodation but not the children's (who they have their own room). This offer is valid in the low season only, from November to May. In the high season, from June to October, the children's room is 50% of the regular price for an adult room. The free offer and the 50% reduction only applies to the accommodation. Meals, including breakfast, are paid as an extra charge.

In our view, the Temanuata Village is too expensive for the quality of the accommodation and the services on offer. This aspect will come out in our commentary, but beyond these fee-related considerations, there is something that you should know about Bora Bora: it is currently a better idea to stay in a three-star hotel than in a guest house or a bed and breakfast. As hotels are offering all sorts of different offers at the moment to attract tourists, which is not the case with the local guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Let's hope that these establishments soon pick up on the trend, because so far they are the most expensive form of accommodation in Polynesia.

As Bora Bora is very well-known and sometimes criticised for its inordinate number of hotels (even though there are only fifteen or so on the main island and motus), it could be taken for the Venice of tropical islands: its hotels are beautiful and the natural setting is superb. The enchanting, green island rises high out of the superb blue lagoon encircling it, while the hotels blend in with the surroundings (like in Venice) and make for a superb holiday destination. As this kind of holiday comes at a price, the Moana, which is next to Matira beach on the main island, is to be recommended for its pleasant accommodation and traditional, friendly atmosphere. Indeed, it is the ideal starting point to explore the whole of the island of Bora Bora.

This superb and innovative hotel is one to remember, if only for its thalassotherapy centre, (known as a 'thalasso and spa'), which is a true haven of well-being, with water that has been drawn from a depth of 3,000 ft, off the coast of Bora Bora. As this seawater is pumped at very cold temperatures (5° C), it is also used for the hotel's air-conditioning system (communal areas and villas), and contributes to reducing the hotel's energy consumption and hence its environmental impact. The Intercontinental Thalasso also offers the luxury of accommodating its guests in villas a free shuttle is available which takes guests to Bora Bora's other Intercontinental hotel, the Moana. This trip gives you the opportunity to visit Pointe Matira peninsula, on Bora Bora's main island.

Located on a motu facing the east coast of Bora Bora, the estate is spacious (with 42-acre grounds) and double-fronted (facing both the ocean and the lagoon) and it has a spa alongside the lagoon (complete with a small private beach), several swimming pools, a total of 91 villas either on the motu or on stilts, some beautiful gardens, and, to top it all off, an elegant ambience. The only downside is the restaurants, which are over-priced, but then you could always head over to the main island of Bora Bora for lunch (a shuttle service is provided during the day, but this will incur an additional charge).
