The Sofitel Motu, as its name shows, has the privilege of an original location on a green islet in the middle of a lagoon, south east of Bora Bora, ideal for playing at Robinson without leaving comfort. An ideal hotel to isolate yourself as lovers.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel is 4 miles from Vaitape. Allow 15 minutes for transfers.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

No bad surprises regarding the rooms, the Sofitel standing is perfectly respected. Decoration and equipments are impeccable, parquet, wooden furniture, large shower room with double basin. In brief, you cannot find fault, except perhaps the choice of the curtain and bedcovers colours (a little dull). Note that the "villa suite" located at the end of the road has an outside jacuzzi and a very large terrace which overlooks the sea. It is not on stilts but has its own small beach. The stilted bungalows have beautiful two-level terraces with deckchairs and an access ladder leading to a mini-deck (with shower) near the water.

    Overview 9.90 /10

The Sofitel has a favorable setting for couples and is situated just in front of the Novotel and the Sofitel Marara properties. The setting is indeed superb and intimate: a little back whale shaped basaltic island (legend says that Piti Uu'ta is a former whale which landed with its little whale) covered with beautiful vegetation and rising from a magnificent lagoon. The Sofitel Motu is a simple institution - it only houses a restaurant and rooms - but very comfortable. You access the "beach", "tree top" (on vegetation stilts) and "stilts" bungalows by a small basalt stone path (high-heels or disabled people stay out) in a green setting. The hotel has only 31 units - one of them is a very beautiful "villa suite".

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

Hillside, the Sofitel restaurant has a fine rounded space under a tent with a wooden architecture and pandanus roof. It also houses the reception and the bar. It has a menu of local and international cuisine which does not offer a substantial choice but where options are nevertheless multiple ,good dishes with Polynesian prices : About 20 pounds for meat or fish. Wine is much more expensive. Fortunately, the restaurant also has the option of selling wine by the glass (3 pounds/glass). The champagne menu, mostly because of honeymoon couples, is very well set up (and very expensive too). Besides the cigar cellar, the "Manu Tuki" has an original selection of "digestive coffees": Italian, French (with Cognac); Irish, Russian (with vodka), Scottish, or again Yankee.

    Beach 8.20 /10

You certainly do not go to Sofitel Motu because of its beach but because of its stilted bungalows where you can quietly tan. The Motu has two little sand beaches with deckchairs, sunshades which offer a fine setting. It is a pity that the view is a little hidden by bungalows that are too close. No water activity is offered here but it will be easy to reserve from the large choice offered by the Novotel and the Sofitel Marara, just opposite.

    To know

The Sofitel Motu has shuttles to Bora Bora (paying service) all day and by night until 11 PM. On top of the coral islet is a little building where you can organize marriages. The Sofitel Motu clients can go to evening buffets and the Sofitel Marara shows, just opposite.

The Maitai Polynesia is one of the hotels of Bora Bora which makes the accommodation on this pearl of the Pacific better value. Nicknamed the pearl of the Pacific, Bora Bora is a magnificent island where tourism is costly, thus putting off less wealthy travellers who cannot afford its luxury accommodation, even for an overnight stay. Fortunately, the main island has a few hotels of intermediary standard, which now compete and bring down their prices when the number of guests is low. The Maitai is one of them. It is therefore one of the hotels you should keep in mind if you would like to see Bora Bora without spending a fortune, while still enjoying the beauty of the lagoon.

As Bora Bora is very well-known and sometimes criticised for its inordinate number of hotels (even though there are only fifteen or so on the main island and motus), it could be taken for the Venice of tropical islands: its hotels are beautiful and the natural setting is superb. The enchanting, green island rises high out of the superb blue lagoon encircling it, while the hotels blend in with the surroundings (like in Venice) and make for a superb holiday destination. As this kind of holiday comes at a price, the Moana, which is next to Matira beach on the main island, is to be recommended for its pleasant accommodation and traditional, friendly atmosphere. Indeed, it is the ideal starting point to explore the whole of the island of Bora Bora.

As this seawater is pumped at very cold temperatures (5° C), it is also used for the hotel's air-conditioning system (communal areas and villas), and contributes to reducing the hotel's energy consumption and hence its environmental impact. The Intercontinental Thalasso also offers the luxury of accommodating its guests in villas a free shuttle is available which takes guests to Bora Bora's other Intercontinental hotel, the Moana. In our view, the Temanuata Village is too expensive for the quality of the accommodation and the services on offer. This aspect will come out in our commentary, but beyond these fee-related considerations, there is something that you should know about Bora Bora: it is currently a better idea to stay in a three-star hotel than in a guest house or a bed and breakfast. As hotels are offering all sorts of different offers at the moment to attract tourists, which is not the case with the local guesthouse or bed and breakfast. Let's hope that these establishments soon pick up on the trend, because so far they are the most expensive form of accommodation in Polynesia.

Located on a motu facing the east coast of Bora Bora, the estate is spacious (with 42-acre grounds) and double-fronted (facing both the ocean and the lagoon) and it has a spa alongside the lagoon (complete with a small private beach), several swimming pools, a total of 91 villas either on the motu or on stilts, some beautiful gardens, and, to top it all off, an elegant ambience.
