Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Conrad is a former stately home that opened as a hotel in 1993. It's therefore no surprise that the hotel is considered as a palace, even if such a notion is not one Belgium is familiar with. This luxury establishment comes complete with high-quality cuisine and access to a very decent spa. Very popular among heads of state and music stars, the establishment boasts a classical style and high-tech facilities.

    Location 6.36 /10

Only a stone's throw away from Louise station, the Conrad is located in the chic and lively neighbourhood that surrounds Louise avenue. Numerous shops and hotels have opened on this local "Champs-Elysées". The area is not exactly crammed with restaurants and bars, but the city centre is only 20 minutes away.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

It's hard to determine which hotels in Brussels have the most spacious rooms but one thing is for sure: with a minimum area of 30 m², the Conrad is one of them! The hotel is also impressive for its impressive number of guest rooms: 269 rooms on 6 floors. The rooms get bigger as you move up in category: classic, deluxe, premium, junior suite, executive suite, duplex, presidential suite and royal suite.
In general, the rooms are decorated in a rather classical style, but the standard and deluxe rooms are soon to undergo renovation work and are set to adopt a more modern style. For the moment, only the units on the 2nd, 5th and 6th floors have been renovated, and boast new mattresses and wall-to-wall carpeting. As far as amenities are concerned, the hotel has played the card of modernity. In addition to the facilities already available (ironing board, safe, stereo system, mini-bar, individual air-conditioning, etc.) all of the rooms are soon to be equipped with a plasma-screen TV and an espresso machine.

    Overview 8.45 /10

Its revolving door has already seen numerous celebrities pass through it, such as Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Céline Dion, Garou and Pink, A flight of steps leads up to a chic reception area, which features a chandelier, marble cladding and classical furniture, among other things. This former stately home has preserved all of its former charm. It even has a ballroom, which is now used a conference room or a reception hall. Since the Conrad primarily caters for businessmen, there are also another 9 spaces here which are used as conference rooms and a business centre equipped with two computers with Internet access.
For some well-deserved rest after all that hard work, the Conrad offers direct access to the Aspria, a true spa complete with massage parlours, a gym, a swimming pool, jacuzzis, Turkish baths, a sauna, etc. Although the spa is part of the hotel, it's an independently-managed facility, and entrance will cost you £22. The centre will soon undergo a 1-year long construction project to build an 800 m² extension. It will include an ice fountain, foot baths and scented Turkish baths.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

What's a palace if it doesn't offer fine cuisine? Although the Conrad cannot boast a star-winning restaurant, it has good reason to take pride in its culinary offerings. Meals are served in a room just as elegant as the bedrooms and common areas, and there are many formulas on offer: cold lunch buffet (£36 , all you can eat) including weekends, the business lunch (starter, main course, cheese or pudding for £45) or the seasonal suggestion. In terms of the menu, the age-old favourites (soups, pasta, fish and meat) are decently-priced for a hotel of this category. For a quick snack for lunch, try the bar. It serves all sorts of goodies from noon till midnight: salads, toasties, omelets, club sandwiches, etc. The Conrad also has a cigar bar and an ancient lounge, which is now used to host business lunches.

    To know

Although the business centre's computers can be used for free, guests have to pay a £22 charge to have Wi-Fi access in their room. It's therefore advisable to avoid using your lap top computer for the Internet.

Standing on Avenue Stéphanie, the aptly named Thon Hotel Bristol Stéphanie enjoys a prime location in one of the city's liveliest neighbourhoods. Opened in 1998, the establishment started renovations in 2007. After the completion of the lobby and conference rooms, the restaurant is scheduled to receive brand new walls. Despite the modern style of the common areas, only a third of the rooms have followed suit. The others are more traditional and break away completely from the rest of the hotel...

If you want to stay in the heart of the capital of Belgium, at a short distance from the Grand-Place, do not be misled by the name of this hotel! The NH City Centre stands in the very elegant neighbourhood of Avenue Louise... far from the centre! Inside, there are no surprises for those who are acquainted with the brand: all the standard NH features are there, making for a comfortable, modern, and unoriginal setting.

This highly modern and trendy establishment has become the place to be if you want to be seen, particularly in the Crystal Lounge. The hotel also enjoys one significant asset: it has one of the biggest indoor gardens in Brussels. Don't hesitate to visit this establishment for a drink or a bite to eat if you can't afford to spend the night.

A hotel right in the centre of the city (Grand Place is 164 ft away, and there is a view of the city hall's belfry from some of the rooms), with the comfort of the hotel chain Ibis (the essentials with no superfluous features and no bad surprises either), a breakfast buffet (which you can have out on the terrace in the summer) for a very reasonable price. A hotel to be picked without hesitation, if you can do without the decoration, the gym and the freshly squeezed juice for breakfast.

This hotel is designed in the same way as the Manos Premier, and has the same stylish, intimate feel as its big brother, but it does not offer quite the same range of services. However, although the Stéphanie lacks a restaurant, a spa and a big garden, guests staying there are free to use the facilities in question at the neighbouring Manos Premier.

A hotel with two-colour decor (black and white), a limited number of bedrooms, objects (one per bedroom) designed by Belgian designers and a very "in" atmosphere on party nights. Since its opening The White Hotel has established itself as a place to be, rather than a place to sleep. It attracts a young, lively clientele and features minimalist design: if you recognise yourself in this description, go for it, otherwise, stay away.

The hotel's sophisticated, classic setting takes you back to the times of Louis XV and Louis XVI. It boasts a 2,000m² garden, though its main advantage is its real basement spa. In addition to the guest rooms, this small 3 storey establishment has a nice wine bar which is open 24/7. All in all, this fairly new hotel is a really nice place to stay!

Established in 1894, the Metropole is considered to be one of the capital's rare palaces, even if this notion doesn't really exist in Belgium. A historical hotel, it has seen several eras pass by, as witnessed in its eclectic decor: French Renaissance, Empire, Italian Baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Déco, Louis XVI and even Contemporary Classic! The icing on the cake though is its gourmet restaurant, of which you should take full advantage (unless your wallet prevents it!).
