Everyone is entitled to a Plaza, even Brussels! This one is not to be mistaken for the Plazas of Madrid, Paris, or Djerba... Located in the northern part of the city centre, the Brussels version is an institution in the Belgian capital city. In addition to its 5 stars, it boasts impeccable service, an elegant decor, and state-of-the-art amenities, not to mention a true gem: an old theatre that was used as a cinema and that has since been converted into a conference room.

    Location 7.3 /10

The Plaza is situated in the northern part of the city centre, just a few minutes away from the Rogier metro station. Although this area isn't the most elegant part of town, it is ideally located between the business district and the city centre, where most of the tourist attractions are found.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

While the decor in the 190 guest rooms is focused on traditional elements, the amenities are clearly modern: air-conditioning has been installed and Wi-Fi Internet access will soon be available in the guest rooms. Several room categories are available: standard, deluxe, prestige, business suites, Plaza suites, and the presidential suite. Added two years ago, the latter is, according to the management, the largest in the Benelux, with 300 m². Every summer, when the hotel is a little less busy, a section of rooms is closed for renovations. However, as is the case in the common areas, there is no risk of designer furniture replacing the traditional Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Just a few small contemporary details have managed to creep in, such as the padded headboards. Classic but elegant, the bathrooms are equipped with a bathtub (as well as a shower and a bidet in some categories), a telephone, and the Plaza's own hospitality products.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The Plaza's prestigious name is proudly displayed on the establishment's façade. Once past the revolving doors, a small sitting area welcomes guests who are staying at the hotel or tourists who are just popping in for a visit. A few stairs lead up to the ultra-elegant lobby, where the furnishings include blue and red sofas, yellow and red armchairs, and chequered flooring covered with rugs. Designed by Polak who was inspired by the hotel George V in Paris, the traditional French-style decoration will never give way to the contemporary fashion found in hotels nowadays. This doesn't stop the hotel from continuously being renovated though, and thanks to these regular updates, it has managed to keep up with the times without sacrificing its original elements. The hotel even boasts 2 lifts and a gym on the 8th floor. It is small but bright, and can be reserved for exclusive use. Beyond its 11 conference rooms, the Plaza has a small business centre equipped with 2 computers and an old cinema that has been converted into a meeting room, or a banquet hall during private functions.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

As is the case for most big-name hotels, the catering at the Plaza focuses on traditional French cuisine, except in summer, when the menu and the prices both lighten up: salads and snacks (lasagna, quiche, pizza, chicken wings, etc) starting from £9. As for the 'real menu', it is renewed once a year. Open from 12:00pm to 2:30pm and from 7:00pm to 9:30pm, the restaurant has its regular customers. Set up under a dome in a small room with about forty seats, it offers a decor that is as delicate as the cuisine itself. Plus, every year it is moved to the 'summer lounge' once the season begins. The absolute must here though, is having a meal in the old theatre/cinema... It is an unforgettable experience and only possible during private functions.

    To know

Opened in 1930, the hotel was shut down in the 1970's and re-opened in 1996. A 'Royal Warrant Holder', the Plaza has also played host to a number of celebrities, such as Brigitte Bardot and Johnny Depp.

      • Advantages

Contrary to most of its Brussels counterparts, the Novotel is not housed in an old building... Opened in 1999, it was built around one of the city's architectural features: the Black Tower, a protected rampart dating back to the Middle Ages. However, although the view of the tower from inside the hotel make it somewhat original, the hotel's interior decor follows the standard classic Novotel concept found all over the globe. It is the ideal place for those who don't like surprises!

This is a central hotel which is well located for exploring the historical centre without having to walk too much. It is just a 5-minute walk from your room at the Grand-Place, past some of Brussels most significant buildings, such as the A La Mort Subite cafe-bar, the Galeries Saint-Hubert and the chocolate-maker Neuhaus (the inventor of praline). The rooms are not the most spacious, but children do stay free of charge in their parents' room. Another advantage: lunch for around £9.20, for a light bite with friends or to recover from an overindulgence of chips and chocolate!

One of the top choices for a family break in the historic centre of Brussels, without blowing your budget, but without losing out on the quality either. The breakfast buffet is very copious, the bedrooms are comfortable (although they do not offer a great amount of space for 4 people), the design is stylish and contemporary (without being a "boutique-hotel" or a "design-hotel"), the Grand Place (central market square) is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. You can enjoy Brussels with your offspring!

You'll find displays of the work of young artists right throughout this small 'hotel-museum', highly-acclaimed by interior design magazines. Whilst the focus in the communal areas is very much on originality, the decor in the guest rooms is of the far more low-key contemporary variety.
