Amy Adejokun Section editor

A hotel with two-colour decor (black and white), a limited number of bedrooms, objects (one per bedroom) designed by Belgian designers and a very "in" atmosphere on party nights. Since its opening The White Hotel has established itself as a place to be, rather than a place to sleep. It attracts a young, lively clientele and features minimalist design: if you recognise yourself in this description, go for it, otherwise, stay away.

    Location 5.37 /10

At 212, Avenue Louise, along tramline 94 (stop 66 ft from the hotel). Place du Châtelain (trendy cafes and boutiques) is a 5-minute walk away. Horta Museum (Art Nouveau) is also accessible from the hotel, just a 15-minute walk away.
Tram and underground journey time to reach Bruxelles Midi station (arrival and departure of Thalys trains): 20 minutes.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

There are 60 bedrooms in all. They overlook Avenue Louise or the backyard which opens onto the old buildings in the area. Whether on the courtyard side or the street side, the hotel is not very well sound-proofed - doors bang and guests talk loudly. As you would come here to party in any case, there's no point complaining. It is worth taking the time, though, to flick through the beautiful books on Belgian design which are placed (and attached to a chain, so you won't be reading them in bed) on the table in the lounge area. Sit back and relax in one of the (neo-Baroque-style) moulded plastic chairs or on the wooden-footed armchair. Look around you: the designer piece, which makes each bedroom unique, maybe a shelf, a set of mirrors, a light, a table... Look for the note next to the designer object to make sure you're looking at the right piece (as there are also other, mass-produced objects, such as the bedside lamps and the metal drum-shaped bedside tables). The remaining decor is black (mottled carpet on the floor) and white (painted walls). As far as facilities are concerned, there is no mini-bar (or mini-refrigerator), though a small bottle of mineral water is provided free of charge. There is a wall-mounted flat screen television and the rooms have (central) air-conditioning and also a telephone. The bathroom has a bathtub, a hair-dryer and shower gel and liquid soap dispensers (from the Michael John and Pascal Morabito ranges).

    Overview 7.95 /10

The White Hotel, opened in 2006, was much talked about from the outset. Located along Avenue Louise, one of the chic parts of the city for going out of an evening, it presents the concept of the "art hotel" in a both stylish and minimalist way. Black and white are the dominant colours. It has a reception hall with a counter running along the wall and a stylish lounge area (more for decoration than to sit in). Further back a lounge, separated from the bar area by a string curtain, minimalist smooth leather armchairs and pouffes that look almost glossed, in white and also in moss green. The bar leads out into a courtyard, but this is only open occasionally, such as for festive events or private functions. There is no fitness room or well-being area. This hotel is clearly very trendy where fashion and partying are concerned, so little thought is given to "keeping fit", though it would have been nice, all the same...

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The White Hotel only serves breakfast, which consists of a continental buffet of fruit smoothies (in cartons), cheese, mini portions of sausage, yogurt, cereal, boiled eggs, cramique (flat brioche bread with raisins), sliced gingerbread, and bread rolls. There are also 2 coffee machines, one of which is an espresso machine. Certain dishes are available for an additional charge, such as fresh juice (£3.50), scrambled eggs, and omelettes (both £4.50). The dining room is located beyond the lounge and has the same stylish layout, with white laminated tables placed in alcoves or under the skylight in the middle of the room. After 10:00am during the week and 11:00am at weekends you will have to look elsewhere for something to eat. The bar serves drinks on request, but you're better off waiting for an event before you decide to have a drink there, as it will be a more pleasant experience. When there is nothing going on at the hotel bar, try one of the trendy hangouts in the nearby Place du Châtelain.

    To know

White and black are the dominant colours with a "bonus" enjoyed by design enthusiasts. There is an object (prototype), designed by a Belgian designer, in each bedroom. This is accompanied by an explanatory note, just like in a contemporary art museum. The exhibited object can be recreated and personalised by the designer on request. Perfect for those who like unique items!
The bedrooms are divided into two categories: "white" and "super white". The difference between the two: the floor area, 377 sq ft "super white" rooms and 269 sq ft "white" rooms. As the rooms are minimally fitted out, stick with the first, less expensive category.

Standing on Avenue Stéphanie, the aptly named Thon Hotel Bristol Stéphanie enjoys a prime location in one of the city's liveliest neighbourhoods. Opened in 1998, the establishment started renovations in 2007. After the completion of the lobby and conference rooms, the restaurant is scheduled to receive brand new walls. Despite the modern style of the common areas, only a third of the rooms have followed suit. The others are more traditional and break away completely from the rest of the hotel...

If you want to stay in the heart of the capital of Belgium, at a short distance from the Grand-Place, do not be misled by the name of this hotel! The NH City Centre stands in the very elegant neighbourhood of Avenue Louise... far from the centre! Inside, there are no surprises for those who are acquainted with the brand: all the standard NH features are there, making for a comfortable, modern, and unoriginal setting.

This highly modern and trendy establishment has become the place to be if you want to be seen, particularly in the Crystal Lounge. The hotel also enjoys one significant asset: it has one of the biggest indoor gardens in Brussels. Don't hesitate to visit this establishment for a drink or a bite to eat if you can't afford to spend the night.

The Conrad is a former stately home that opened as a hotel in 1993. It's therefore no surprise that the hotel is considered as a palace, even if such a notion is not one Belgium is familiar with. This luxury establishment comes complete with high-quality cuisine and access to a very decent spa. Very popular among heads of state and music stars, the establishment boasts a classical style and high-tech facilities.

Located just a few steps away from the European Parliament, the Léopold doesn't have as much character as many of the other hotels in Brussels. It comes as no surprise, then, that it mainly attracts people travelling on business. Classical in style, this hotel could do with some refurbishment, both in the rooms and in the common areas. However, the hotel can take pride in offering a peaceful environment, and appetising catering services.

This hotel is designed in the same way as the Manos Premier, and has the same stylish, intimate feel as its big brother, but it does not offer quite the same range of services. However, although the Stéphanie lacks a restaurant, a spa and a big garden, guests staying there are free to use the facilities in question at the neighbouring Manos Premier.

The hotel's sophisticated, classic setting takes you back to the times of Louis XV and Louis XVI. It boasts a 2,000m² garden, though its main advantage is its real basement spa. This small, intimate hotel with 53 guest rooms is a lovely place to stay!

In addition to the guest rooms, this small 3 storey establishment has a nice wine bar which is open 24/7. All in all, this fairly new hotel is a really nice place to stay!

Established in 1894, the Metropole is considered to be one of the capital's rare palaces, even if this notion doesn't really exist in Belgium. A historical hotel, it has seen several eras pass by, as witnessed in its eclectic decor: French Renaissance, Empire, Italian Baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Déco, Louis XVI and even Contemporary Classic! The icing on the cake though is its gourmet restaurant, of which you should take full advantage (unless your wallet prevents it!).

This hotel is part of the new trend for the art-hotel: the bedrooms, decorated by fine arts students, offer guests the opportunity to sleep in a unique place (each room being distinguished from the others by an original fresco). This will change your perception of art and the hotel business in general.
