The Hotel Royal, as it is called by the inhabitants of Budapest, boasts a rich history that adds to its prestige. It opened in 1896 for the celebrations surrounding the Millennium Exhibition. At that time, the Hotel Royal was the biggest building on the boulevard and offered all the modern conveniences of the era. It was a place where the musicians and intellectuals of Budapest met. Bartok, the composer, and Joséphine Baker, the dancer, were regular guests of this prestigious hotel and used the impressive dance hall to perform.
After several renovations, the establishment has now adopted a more modern style, but an atmosphere reminiscent of the turn of the 20th century can still be felt in certain areas.

Location
8.06/10
The hotel stands on Nagykörút (or "Grand Boulevard"), in the historic centre of the city, next to the Music Academy. The neighbourhood is very pleasant and includes 5 tram lines and a tram stop just in front of the establishment. The 5 tram lines allow you to visit every part of the city.
Accommodation
8.70/10
The hotel includes 414 rooms between 30 and 40 m² and offer a view of an architecturally interesting building dating from the 20th century. However, we recommend that you request a room that looks out onto the courtyard, as they are more calm. The interior blends tones of brown and red with dark wood furniture, which makes for a very welcoming atmosphere. Far from impersonal, the rooms are sober in a way only achieved in top establishments.
All the rooms include a TV set, a DVD player (with a movie rental service), a stereo system and free Internet access. They also include a mini bar and a safe.
The bathrooms are spacious, with a single sink, full set of welcome toiletries, hair dryer, large mirror, bathtub and a bathrobe for each guest.
If you need something ironed, the hotel has a free laundry service.
There is also 24/7 room service.
In short, the interior decor and level of service are certainly up to standard for this category of hotel whose charm is undeniable.
Overview
9.70/10
The Hotel Royal offers all the amenities that one would expect from a 5 star establishment. The building was renovated in 1996 and great care was taken to preserve the hotel's original atmosphere. The facade, stairway and modernist inside windows also underwent renovations. However, the other parts of the hotel are a lot more modern and fit in nicely with the general setting.
The breakfast room is particularly impressive. The ceilings are 40 m high and the room boasts a huge stained-glass window, as well as wicker chairs set around tables with flower arrangements.
The hotel also offers a fusion cuisine restaurant managed by Chef Henri Betah. The Atrium Royal is the establishment's main restaurant. You will also find a bar, the Royal Bar, a wine shop and a tea room where one of the best Hungarian pastries is served.
The spa is without a doubt the main asset of the hotel. Located underground and built in 1886, it opened in 2006 after considerable renovations. 1000 m² of well-being and relaxation! If you're planning a family holiday, you should know that children are not allowed inside the spa. However, if you want to take advantage of it yourself, you can rely on the child supervision service to take your kids to other spas in hotels owned by the same group.
Food and drink
8.45/10
This is certainly the establishment that offers the most in terms of catering. The Hotel Royal has no less than 5 restaurants.
The main restaurant of the Corinthia Grand Hotel is the Atrium. It serves traditional Hungarian dishes as well as the latest inventions in "nouvelle cuisine". The chef, Vincent Astier, strives to blend French and Hungarian tastes, with the effect of creating a highly original menu, which you may enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere. The rates are very low in order to attract the businessmen-based clientele.
The fusion cuisine restaurant is called The Sushi Bar and then there is the slightly less prestigious Rickshaw Restaurant, so you'll have ample opportunities to vary your meals.
Moving on, there are two bars where you can enjoy a moment (or two) of relaxation in another atmosphere, and maybe nibble on a few light snacks.
Finally, there's the tea room, where you can have a go at the best pastries that Budapest has to offer. We recommend the "Szamos Marcipán", especially if you like cream!
To know
The welcome is a bit cold but this is one of the characteristics of the Hungarian mentality. Don't be surprised! It's like this in most luxury establishments.
It's worth noting that the spa is closed to children. However, there is a child supervision service that can take them to another spa belonging to the same hotel group.

Located beside Budapest's most beautiful avenue, the Andrassy Hotel has reason to boast of its quality. The reception area is very pleasant and the staff very welcoming. The building was originally an orphanage, but a number of modifications have been carried out since then. The owner bought the building in 1999 and opened the Andrassy in 2001. The most recent renovations were carried out in 2007.
Dating back to 1896, the Radisson was formerly called the Britannia, and was the place to be seen at the time. The hotel is still a fine establishment, but it could do with being spruced up. The 1970's decor is rather outdated and gives the place an old-fashioned feel. It is in a good location for you to visit many sights without having to cover too much ground.
The Domina Inn Fiesta Budapest has belonged to the Italian hotel chain, the Domina Hotel Group, since 2005, and the building dates from 1994. So you can understand why you meet a lot of Italians there. It is a pleasant establishment, located in one of the historical districts of the city. It is actually only a stone's throw away from one of the two opera houses in Budapest.
This small hotel located in the heart of Budapest, on the Pest side, really does convey a XIXth century atmosphere. You can not miss it with its pale blue façade. It is an ideal place for both family holidays and romantic breaks.
Located a stone's throw away from Budapest city centre, under an archway, the Mercure Metropol benefits from an excellent location. It was built in 1896, the year when the first European underground railway line was inaugurated. The decoration is therefore inspired by this event, and the same atmosphere is recreated inside the hotel. The last renovation dates from 2000...
Open in 2000, the Unio Hotel is a charming family hotel. The welcome is very convivial and once inside we can sense a certain Hungarian atmosphere. The hotel feels more like a large guest house rather than a proper hotel and dates back to the 18th century. It is well situated to explore the town centre by foot.
Located in the historic centre of Budapest, the building housing the New York Palace, of neo-classical architecture, dates from 1894. It was entirely renovated by the Italian hotel group Boscolo Luxury Hotels. Here, all is luxury and class. If you don't have the chance to stay at this hotel, at least visit its famous New York Café, where Hungarian poets and writers used to meet.
This hotel is ideal for welcoming families. The prices are reasonable, and the reception staff go to great lengths to make sure families have an enjoyable stay. As this hotel is in the Ibis chain, which is part of the Accor group, don't expect to be knocked off your feet when it comes to the decor and services on offer: they are exactly the same as what you would expect to find in the chain's other hotels. However, while this place might not be too exotic, it is perfectly suited for smaller budgets.

The advantage of this 5 star hotel is its location in the heart of the city. The building was constructed by Jozsef Finta and Antal Puhl in 1992. It looks like a glass cylinder with several doors leading guests either to the reception or to the restaurants and bars. The decor is a subtle mixture of tradition and modernity. It even has 20th-century Hungarian works of art on display, giving its guests a chance to admire the artistic heritage of the country as they roam the hotel floors. The welcome, the decor, and the available facilities are perfectly adapted to this category of hotel: you will enter a world of refinement and luxury the moment you step inside the lobby.

This hotel is part of the Park Plaza hotel group, known for developing quite an original concept: a designer was invited to come and design the entire hotel. Donald Sultan from the USA designed the entire hotel: from the entrance to the rooms to the crockery and the paintings, what he has achieved is quite a success.
Another particularity of this hotel is that its facade, facing the Parliament, is very modern, but the entrance leads into another, baroque-style building. The contrast between the modern and the baroque sections is truly fascinating for fans of architecture.

Located only 50m from Roosevelt square, this hotel is located in the very heart of the historic centre of Budapest, a few meters from the banks of the Danube. It is close to the Deak subway station, with connections to all 3 subway lines of the city. This small hotel has standard amenities but the welcome it provides is very friendly... It occupies a modern building that was built in the 40's and renovated some 8 years ago. Its glass entrance opens onto the reception and next to this you will find a spacious and modern lounge area. The bar stays open 24/7 and offers refreshing beverages and snacks.

This 4 star establishment stands on the island of Margitsziget, on the shores of the Danube, in the heart of the park. It provides a very enjoyable setting, especially if you're after some tranquillity. A hotel from the Danabius Group, it has its own health care centre, notably due to its thermal springs.
