Hotels with a view do not come much better than the Petra Bianca, a charming, comfortable, and sophisticated establishment overlooking Cala di Volpe and perfectly suited to couples. It will be a case of love at first sight for holidaymakers in search of peace and quiet, and is an excellent base from which to explore the Costa Smeralda coastline. It is also a popular port of call for golfers, thanks to its proximity to the famous 18-hole course at Pevero.

    Location 10.0 /10

The Petra Bianca overlooks Cala di Volpe in the southern region of the Costa Smeralda, and is in a great location to visit the whole area. Porto Cervo is about 5 mi away and Olbia airport is half an hour away. Maquis scrubland surrounds the hotel premises and the road leading from the sea up to the hotel is quite a steep little climb. Add to this the fact that there are no shops or entertainment facilities within walking distance, and you would be well advised to bring your own vehicle!

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

Obviously in a hotel with such a location, securing a room with or without a view can make all the difference. Three quarters of the 41 rooms, as well as the 7 suites, look out over the bay and boast a balcony/terrace to make the most of the view. That means that the standard rooms, which overlook the scrubland or swimming pool, are in the minority at the Petra Bianca. Inside, they all benefit from the same comprehensive set of facilities, including a wide screen satellite television, a fully stocked mini bar, free safe, and so on. The decor is cosy, in an understated kind of way. However, it is clear that the bathrooms - unlike the other parts of the rooms - were not renovated in 2009. Although they are in good condition and contain the facilities you would expect (but only a shower, and no bath), they are quite ugly.
Families may wish to book into one of the 2 sets of adjoining rooms, which are on the ground floor and open either onto the lawn or the swimming pool.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The Petra Bianca is perched high above Cala Di Volpe, and just about wherever you happen to be in the hotel, the magnificent views stretch all the way from Porto Rotondo on the other side of the bay out to Capo Figari. The exposed stone wall building is several storeys high and its hillside vantage point is both a selling point and a practical drawback.
For an establishment housing just 48 guest rooms, 7 of which are suites, the Petra Bianca is big. Its spacious lobby is decorated in shades of white and cream with dashes of light blue, a colour scheme that can be seen throughout the hotel. The style of the furnishings is not particularly bold, consisting of a classic style revisited with a contemporary touch. Not very daring, you could say. Outside, you cannot help but be impressed by the view, to the extent that the beautiful gardens and their colourful bougainvilleas in the foreground go almost unnoticed. We will forgive the very kitsch fake rocks in the small swimming pool, which is otherwise very pleasant, thanks to its wooden terrace... and the view, of course! Above this space there is a nice piano bar with a terrace, which is the perfect place to enjoy a drink as the sun sets.
This is a boutique hotel where the leisure facilities have been kept to a minimum, consisting only of a gym. A well-being centre is due to open in spring 2011. Guests may reserve Cala di Volpe's public tennis court, which is located below the hotel. The famous golf course of Pevero is only just over a mile away and there is a free shuttle service to take you there.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

There is only one restaurant at the Petra Bianca, but even if there was a choice, everyone would surely flock to this one, given the stupendous views from the dining room's high perch. With a subdued decor and la carte table service, there are 5 or 6 choices for each dish (starter, pasta, main dish, and dessert) and a good wine list. The waiting staff are very professional without being stuffy. Barbecue evenings are sometimes organised, when the food is served as a buffet. The Petra Bianca's restaurant has a good reputation throughout the region, and deservedly so. Remember, if you have a bed and breakfast package, the other meals come at an added cost.
The tasty breakfast consists of a sweet and savoury buffet served each morning in the same dining room. At this early hour, the view and the prevailing sense of tranquillity are even more noticeable!

    Beach 7.45 /10

The Petra Bianca could hardly be described as a 'waterfront' establishment, as its private beach is about 2 mi from the hotel, although a free shuttle will take you there on request from mid-May to mid-September. It is a very pleasant private beach with lovely white sand and clear water in natural surroundings. Deckchairs, parasols, and beach towels are all provided on site for guests. You can also enjoy a wide variety of water sports (for an additional charge). Closer at hand you will find a public beach, although it is still half a mile from the hotel.

    To know

Children are certainly welcome here, but it is not the ideal place to bring them, as for activities they will have to make do with splashing around in the pool.
The hotel has its own private beach but it is 2 mi away. However, a free shuttle service will take you there and back on request. The Pevero golf course can be reached in the same way.
The Petra Bianca is a member of the "Prestige Hotels of the World" group.
