Hotel Valdiola Hotel 0 star
Cala di Volpe 07020 CALA DI VOLPE IT Cala di Volpe, Italy
Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Valdiola consists of 32 guest rooms, a breakfast room, a small swimming pool, a super friendly staff, and a fantastic view. It is perched on a hill overlooking Cala di Volpe, with maquis shrubland all around. The hotel looks out over the trees to Porto Rotondo, on the other side of the bay. Ideally suited to holidaymakers with an independent means of transport and a desire to explore, it also makes a pleasant but unpretentious base from which to discover the rest of the Costa Smeralda.

    Location 9.38 /10

The location of the hotel, with the Costa Smeralda on its doorstep, is its main advantage. Porto Cervo is about 3 mi away and Olbia airport is half an hour away. However, the immediate surroundings are less attractive, consisting of maquis shrubland followed by the road. It is undeniably peaceful and a nice place for a stroll but there are no shops or entertainment centres within walking distance. The closest beach is 900m away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel's 32 rooms are nothing fancy, but they are big and pleasant. The main difference is the view: some overlook the sea, which is well worth a look, and the others look over the garden. Their size is enhanced by the balcony, and they are well equipped and decorated with light-coloured wood and shades of pink on a white background. Twelve of them were renovated in 2010 and the others are expecting their turn soon. The facilities include a television, a free safe, a fully stocked minibar, a hair dryer, and big storage cupboards. The bathrooms were renovated in 2009. Clean and functional, they are fitted with a shower.

    Overview 6.95 /10

It doesn't take long to look around the Valdiola. Built in 1980, it consists of a single and rather uniquely designed 2 storey building, and very few additional facilities. A few trees adorn the grounds and ivy and bougainvillea reach up towards the balconies. The reception area opens immediately onto the lobby/salon/bar on one side, with the breakfast room on the other. Both these spaces open onto a large terrace with a nice view. It is the perfect place for both breakfast and evening drinks! The decor has obviously been deliberately chosen, but whether or not it is attractive is open to debate. Indeed, the big white fireplace displaying amphoras might not be to everyone's taste. There is a little rounded swimming pool with a few plastic deckchairs behind the hotel building.
The small team managing the establishment is very friendly and service-oriented.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

There is no restaurant! The only meal of the day is breakfast, which is served in a dining room that is small but big enough, considering there are only 32 guest rooms. The decor in here is very traditional, and particular emphasis is put on the framed pieces of embroidery. The terrace is probably a more pleasant place to start the day. As far as the food goes, the Valdiola lays out a very basic buffet.
The hotel has an agreement with a restaurant 50m away, so guests can book in on a half-board package if they like.

    To know

The hotel has very few facilities but enjoys partnerships with lots of nearby activity centres to help guests make the most of the usual services and activities, for example: restaurants, massage centres, diving schools, and tennis and golf clubs (the famous Pevero club is just 2 mi away).

The Valdiola is very popular with Spaniards, who are the most represented nationality at the hotel.
