The hotel stands on the cliff-side directly overlooking the beautiful cove of Cala Vinas near Magaluf, just over 12 mi west of Palma. The airport is some 15 mi away, with a transfer time of 30 minutes.
The guest rooms at the Barcelo Cala Vinas are fitted with tile flooring and are also equipped with a kitchenette, complete with a sink, refrigerator, and two electric hotplates. The decor and furniture consist of two paintings adorning the wall, a double bed in all of the rooms, and a sofa-bed that can accommodate a further two guests. Amenities, meanwhile, include individual air-conditioning, satellite television broadcasting 18 channels, an electronic safe (available to hire), a luggage stand, and a direct international phone line. 80% of the rooms also have a sea view balcony furnished with two plastic chairs and a little table. The bathrooms, meanwhile, are accessed via a glass sliding door and come with a bathtub with a flexible showerhead, a hair-dryer, and a selection of hospitality products. The toilet is separated from the rest of the bathroom by a sliding glass door. The hotel's 40 spacious (40m²) family rooms are decorated in a modern style and have an even better equipped kitchen area (complete with a microwave, crockery, cutlery, and a toaster), a plasma-screen television, and a bedroom separated from the lounge area by a sliding glass door.
The hotel is a member of the Mallorcan Barcelo Hotels and Resorts Group and has a total of 337 guest rooms divided among 3 five to six-storey buildings built into the cliff-side. In fact, the walkways providing access around the hotel are suspended over a canyon! Built in 1983 and renovated in 2006, the Barcelo Cala Vinas boasts two swimming pools that are open from 9:30am to 7:30pm. The first, rectangular pool is 1.4m deep whilst the second, located by the sea, is where all the entertainment takes place; it is set down a gentle slope, just like the beach. The wooden solarium terrace is a little short on space for the deckchairs provided, but at least the palm trees provide a spot of shade. There is even a separate little 18 inch deep children's pool complete with a play area, a slide, and a mushroom-shaped fountain. The hotel has opted for light entertainment, so no loud techno but just some pleasant Spanish background music. There are even tents on the lawn where you can enjoy a massage. The stage where the entertainment takes place, meanwhile, is located in a cave carved into the rock. The poolside snack bar is open from 10:00am until midnight and has a ping-pong table and a large flat-screen television. The entire area is adorned with flower-flanked walkways, pools, and lawned areas, making for very pleasant surroundings. Whatever you do, make sure you take the time to admire the beautiful Cala Vinas cove from the panoramic whirlpool bath, open 24/7, at the top of the heights of the resort before you leave.
Food and drink
The main restaurant, the Es Pop, serves meals as a buffet and features show-cooking demonstrations. Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10:30am, lunch from 1:00pm to 3:30pm, and dinner from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. The restaurant here can accommodate 300 guests, with another hundred or so out on the lovely terrace, where meals can be enjoyed to the sound of water trickling in the nearby pool. It's just a shame the peace and quiet is spoilt somewhat by the sound of children. The dining room itself is nicely decorated in a Mallorcan style with a vaulted ceiling, columns, and an exposed stone wall. The cuisine served here is a combination of international and Mediterranean dishes, although a Mallorcan night is also held once a week. On Sundays, it's paella and sangria all round! The poolside snack bar is open from 10:00am until midnight whilst the second snack bar, the Es Mirador up on the terrace, has a much more chilled out feel to it.
Cala Vinas is a tiny, adorable little cove providing very peaceful surroundings in the shade of palm trees and aromatic pines. The turquoise waters here are edged with a combination of rocks and sand, whilst the blue flag indicates that the beach is very clean. You'll also find another green, orange, or red flag indicating how safe it is to swim, though the cove is also supervised by a lifeguard. It goes without saying that the risk is very low in this heavenly little lagoon, as the water is not very deep and there are no currents or waves. The beach is equipped with plastic deckchairs and straw parasols but there are no water sports opportunities in the area.
The Barcelo Cala Vinas is open from March until October. The all-inclusive option only applies between the hours of 7:30am and 11:30pm. The hotel attracts a particularly large number of Russian guests. Open from 10:00am to 8:00pm, the hotel's 350m² spa includes an indoor heated saltwater pool complete with a thermal circuit with waterfalls and hydromassage jets, a sauna, a whirlpool bath, a hammam, and 3 massage and treatment rooms where the therapists use La Sultan de Saba brand products. The hotel's conference room can accommodate around 100 people. Free parking is available for guests. If you're taking your laptop with you, you'll be able to use the Wi-Fi for free in the lobby.
