One doesn't stay at the Quinta das Vinhas to enjoy the city of Funchal, as the establishment is totally secluded in the heights of Madeira. However, one chooses this establishment for its charm and quiet setting. This former private residence has long been in the hands of the same family and is totally lost among the vineyards. The place exudes serenity and peace. The main house was restored and retains some of its past features.

    Location 5.0 /10

The Quinta das Vinhas is located in the heights of Madeira, in the small village of Estreito de Calheta. Expect around 40 minutes to get to Funchal and about 1 hour to get to the airport.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

The Quinta das Vinhas was turned into a hotel in 1991, when some parts of the main house were transformed into guest rooms. It has six in all. Of varying sizes, they all afford the same level of comfort: a free safe, TV, no air-conditioning, no room service, and no minibar. However, it's the charm of the rooms that make it such a nice place. They include ancient furniture, antique carpets, and decorative works of art. The occupants of the ground floor rooms enjoy direct access to the swimming pool. However, the estate also include 14 cottages that are rented out.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Its location on the heights of Calheta provides the Quinta das Vinhas with a superb view of the Atlantic Ocean. Built as a private home in 1645, the establishment has now turned some of its private rooms into guest rooms. The hotel's reception desk occupies a small office that is separated from the rest of the complex. All of the facilities are crammed into a single area: the dining room, the lounge areas, and the bedrooms. The original furniture has been preciously preserved. A little further down from the house there is a small swimming pool, just big enough for a refreshing dip.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The term 'restaurant' is a bit of an exaggeration to describe the dining room. It features a single wooden table which guests gather around to eat together. However, if you fancy a romantic candlelit dinner, there's a terrace in the garden that should do the trick. Breakfast is served as a buffet, whereas lunch and dinner are served as a set menu. For lunch there are light snacks and for dinner traditional Portuguese cuisine is on offer. Your meal - starter, main course, dessert - can be adapted to suit your tastes.

    To know

In view of the rough terrain, we don't recommend this establishment to people with reduced mobility.
