Away from the hustle and bustle of Bavaro, the Eden Roc is fortunate enough to be located at Cap Cana, a luxurious resort in the south of the Punta Cana area, close to the airport, which includes a luxury marina, golf courses and several luxury establishments. The lucky guests at this boutique hotel, part of The Leading Hotels of the World group, are lodged in one of the 34 sumptuous villas that come with a swimming pool and private Jacuzzi, as well as an iPad to surf the web for free. All of this in an intimate and incredibly peaceful atmosphere, just 300m from the beautiful Playa Caleton private beach. We also liked the food, the electric golf buggy to get around, and the spa with an area reserved especially for children.

    Location 10.0 /10

The Eden Roc is located in the south of the touristy Punta Cana area, the country's top tourist destination, with 25 miles of beaches between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Oceans, on the south-east coast of the Dominican Republic. The hotel is part of the exclusive Cap Cana luxury resort, a city in itself with golf courses and a marina! The hotel is 300m from Playa Caleton, a magnificent little private beach, close to the Punta Espada golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Punta Cana International Airport is just 12 miles from the hotel: allow 15 minutes for transfers.

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

The Eden Roc has 34 villas ranging from 77 to 188m², all equipped with a private swimming pool (lit at night) and a Jacuzzi. There is also a parking space in front of the entrance for your electric golf buggy. It's difficult to find better in terms of comfort: an iPad provided to surf the Internet for free, a cordless telephone, two flat-screen televisions (you could even call it a home cinema) with cable channels, a king-size or two queen-size beds, individual air-conditioning, a well stocked minibar fridge (not included in the price), tea and coffee-making facilities, a Nespresso coffee machine, etc. The large walk-in closet comes with a cedar wood wardrobe, an ironing board and an iron, bathrobes and slippers, a hair-dryer, an electronic safe large enough to store a laptop, two umbrellas and shoe shine products. With their coral coloured stone floors and azulejo tilework, the guest rooms are nicely decorated with shells dotted here and there, not to mention a chandelier. The furniture consists of an elegant wooden desk with a green plant on top, a large coffee table in the lounge, and a sofa with comfortable cushions. The deckchairs with their mattresses arranged around the swimming pool terrace are equally comfortable! Room service is available from 11:00am to 11:00pm.
The marble bathrooms can be closed off by the sliding door that serves as a mirror. These very spacious bathrooms are more like little spas! They include: a large marble Jacuzzi, two candles to set the mood, a large tropical shower with a shower hose, and a second shower on the outdoor terrace in the little garden with its stone bench topped with cushions, where guests can receive massages on request. The toilet is, of course, in a separate room, with a bidet and a telephone. Also provided are a make-up mirror, Italian Lauratonatto brand complimentary toiletries, a designer light, and a designer double wash basin. Just a reminder, the bathrobes, slippers and hair-dryer are in the walk-in closet.
We recommend the family suites for families; they're ideal for children, who have their own bathroom, bunk beds, children's books, a wooden horse an even a Sophie the Giraffe soft toy!

    Overview 8.95 /10

Opened in December 2012, the Eden Roc at Cap Cana has 34 spacious villas, from 77 to 188m², with their own private swimming pool and Jacuzzi. They are spread across a vast tropical garden with an artificial lagoon, which you can't swim in but which children can use for kayaking. If you feel a little cramped in your small private pool, you can always take a swim in the superb, long lagoon pool next to reception and the restaurant, which is lined with palm trees. You will find the pool bar, the Blue Lagoon, white deckchairs, showers and parasols. Here, calm reigns supreme in the chill out lounge atmosphere. Towels are provided on-site as well. Opposite the beach, at the Caleton Beach Club, is a second huge lagoon pool. This 1m50 deep swimming pool is open from 7:00am to 6:00pm. Guests can also relax on the comfortable double mattresses of the Balinese beds. The Caleton Beach Club has kept the superb palapa lobby with two pirogues (boats) above the reception of the former Villas Caleton hotel, now part of the Eden Roc, a member of the Italian-Venezualan Solaya Hotels and Resorts Group.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The main restaurant, the Méditerraneo, of course serves Mediterranean food under the leadership of an Italian chef. You can choose to eat in the interior, air-conditioned dining room, but we highly recommend eating on the terrace overlooking the majestic swimming pool, which is beautifully lit up in the evening. The same goes for the breakfast buffet, served from 7:00am to 11:00am: it's much more pleasant to eat outdoors in the fresh air! Breakfast is a real feast! It has to be said that the French pastry chef knows his croissants, but also his raisin bread pastry, cakes, tarts and various other pastries that are also served at dinner, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. A cheese platter, cold meat cuts, fruit, cereal, toast, freshly squeezed orange, papaya, pineapple and passion fruit juice...what a delight! The problem is that the buffet is so good you won't have room to order the à la carte omelettes, crepes, pancakes and waffles! Just next door you'll find the Gastronomico, the hotel's gourmet restaurant, which can seat up to 20 people. Open for dinner only, the bodega (wine cellar) at the restaurant has a choice of 112 bottles. Among these is the largest collection of Champagne in the Dominican Republic and a large range of Mediterranean, Spanish and Lebanese wines, as well as wines from Morocco, Italy and Greece. The restaurant's name, 'Méditerranéo' is definitely taken to heart, down to the choice of olive oil: all the countries in the Mediterranean region are represented! There is even an intruder: olive oil from Chile, which is actually quite original and a product that we recommend trying!

The Italian chef from Milan who lives in Paris but works in Punta Cana, likes to surprise clients, right from the appetisers. Likewise for the pastry chef, who originally comes from the Paris suburbs. This is the man who will concoct hot croissants worthy of a French bakery for those lucky enough to be staying here to enjoy for breakfast. The products used are all good quality: pata negra (Iberian ham) starter, risotto in cuttlefish ink, and fillet of Virginia beef that cuts like butter. To finish off your meal, why not enjoy a brandy and a cigar in the Riva bar next door, decorated with a white piano and wood floor. As its name suggests, you'll feel like you're on a Riva, a famous Italian brand, the Rolls Royce of boats. We loved the glamorous 1960s decor. The bar is open from 4:00pm to midnight.

The Blue Lagoon pool bar serves snacks from 10:00am to 5:00pm. You can also find refreshments in the morning (from 7:00am to 11:00am), afternoon (from 12:00pm to 5:30pm) and evening (from 6:30pm to 11:30pm) at the Caleton Beach Club, under the large palapa with its wooden terrace overlooking the sea: La Palapa by Eden Roc. A great place to sample the fish and seafood, particularly the lobster, to the soothing sounds of the lapping waves.

    Beach 8.95 /10

Protected by the coral reef, Playa Caleton is an idyllic beach: with a turquoise blue lagoon, transparent water, white sand and coconut trees, it's difficult not to be enchanted by this little cove surrounded by rocks! The absence of any water activities means that total calm is guaranteed. Wooden deckchairs with mattresses, all neatly lined up, palm leaf parasols and showers are all provided. A waiter service is available for drinks, or you can go directly to the little bar restaurant nestled under a palapa (an open-sided thatched hut) and take a seat on the panoramic wooden terrace, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the beach and the sea. A lifeguard monitors the bathing area, marked out by buoys, and a flag indicates the safety level for swimming. It goes without saying that the flag is almost always green! There is also a children's playground on the beach and a beach volleyball pitch for those so inclined. Add to this a pavilion for wedding ceremonies and a palapa for couples massages and you'll have a good idea of this private beach that is exclusively for guests at the Eden Roc at Cap Cana.

    To know

Bear in mind that the hotel is very quiet, and that there is no organised entertainment, water sports, pool tables or other games. On the other hand, the Punta Espada golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is only a 10-minute walk away. Part of The Leading Hotels of the World group, the Eden Roc is the new trendy boutique hotel in Punta Cana, modelled on the hotels in the French Riviera. The villas are so spacious and luxurious, with their private pool and Jacuzzi, that you'll be tempted to spend your whole holiday in them, even more so since they are equipped with an iPad to surf the web for free at your leisure! Even though the Eden Roc looks like an intimate hotel for wealthy couples, children are also welcome! A playground on the beach, the sophisticated Koko kids club with table football, video games, a Wii, PS3, DVDs, mini kayaking on the artificial lake, and even a mini spa are all provided for children!
