Amy Adejokun Section editor

It is hardly distinguishable from the outside and yet, this is a perfectly charming little urban hotel. The Urban Chic is a moderately-sized establishment located in the centre of town, the ideal departure point for discovering the city: it stands in a street full of different shops, fashion boutiques and bars where you can enjoy a nice drink in the evening. The aptly named Urban Chic is a modern and trendy hotel with a tasteful interior. As for the staff, they, like the hotel, are charming and extremely pleasant! Do not hesitate to stay here as we had one of the warmest welcomes.

    Location 9.1 /10

The hotel is in the centre of Cape Town, on the shopping street of Long Street. The airport is a mere half hour drive away. However, you should know that the traffic jams can drastically increase your travel time.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The 20 rooms here are all considered to be suites: 5 Standard Suites, 9 Luxury Suites and 6 Superior Suites. They are all decorated in the same vein and tones: simple, modern and comfortable. For some of them, you have the choice of both a shower and a bath that open onto the room itself, whereas for others, you only have a shower, but they are nevertheless spacious. The sleeping quarters also offer enough space and the wall-to-wall carpet adds cosiness and comfort to the room. As far as equipment is concerned, there is all you need: discrete air-conditioning, a hair-dryer, a minibar and a safe, etc. Unfortunately though, the rooms afford a view of the building opposite, so don't forget to close your curtains at night. If you want to enjoy the landscape, you should book a room on the 6th floor as some of the rooms have a view of the Table Mountain.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The Urban Chic opened in 2005 and it is a lovely place to stay when you are in Cape Town. There is not much to say in terms of upkeep, as the hotel is brand new. We would also like to make a special mention about the staff, who were charming, friendly and always available, at any hour of the day or night. This little urban hotel managed to find its own identity by mixing modern and designer interior decoration. The charm of the place is not to be found in the little details, but in its layout. The small lobby is overlooked by the first floor restaurant which is the first of a total of 6 floors.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

If you have worked your way through the minibar and are still feeling parched, you should head for the Cigar/Cocktail Lounge, one of the rare places where you are allowed to smoke. With a maximum capacity of 30, it is not very big but the atmosphere is very warm and friendly and in the evening, it fills up with office workers. As for the Gallery Café; in the mornings it proposes a buffet breakfast, and hot dishes are brought directly to your table, which is something that you should be thankful for as other than croissants and cereal, there is not much choice to be had. Breakfast is served between 07:00 am and 11:00 am to the delight of early birds and those who wish to lie in. It can accommodate 90 guests and although it is not particularly spacious, given the number of rooms in the hotel, it is never over-crowded! If your are curious about the menu, you should ask for one at the reception desk.

    To know

There are several bars on Long Street (the street on which the Urban Chic stands), including the Zula, which has a terrace where you can enjoy a refreshing drink during the day, and a night club, where you can dance the night away. There is also a good restaurant in the next street: the 95 Keerom. Its cuisine is mainly of Italian inspiration and very high quality. Its mash ravioli are delicious and the salmon melts in your mouth!
