    Location 5.66 /10

Perched on a south-facing slope in the hamlet of Moettieux, the Auberge du Bois Prin is rather remote. It takes around 25 minutes to walk here from the centre of Chamonix, and although it is a pleasant stroll along some quiet streets, note that it is all uphill! A free shuttle can be organised upon request at the Auberge (the journey takes just 5 minutes by car).

    Accommodation 9.00 /10

Comfortable and cosy are the words that best describe the 10 guest rooms at the Bois Prin. Spacious and warm, they feature wood-panelled walls, exposed beams and solid wood furniture. However, the rooms are not what you'd usually expect from 5 star luxury. The mismatched furniture and the classic decor, which could even be described as a little outdated, are not likely to please those who prefer refined establishments.

With regard to the amenities and services, though, all of the essentials are provided along with a few extras, which include a DVD player, a whirlpool bath (rooms on the ground floor only) and 24-hour room service. The guest rooms on the garden level have access to their own private terrace, while the rest have a balcony. Rest assured though that all of the rooms offer a view of Mont Blanc.

    Overview 8.30 /10

The guest rooms, and subsequently the ground floor, were entirely refurbished in 2011 and the Auberge du Bois Prin was awarded its 5th official star in December 2012. Though this little hotel composed of 10 guest rooms has gone up a grade, it has not changed its philosophy and continues to focus on its cosy atmosphere, its gastronomic restaurant and the view it affords of Mont Blanc. Indeed, far from flashy, this chalet hotel has its own idea of luxury. A tour of the premises doesn't take long. On the ground floor, the small reception area with its fireplace opens directly onto the dining room. The guest rooms are located both upstairs and on the garden level. Combining old furniture and a few relaxing touches, the decor is very subtle. The warm welcome, however, is definitely not.

In the summer, guests can sit on the restaurant's terrace or in the garden where they can enjoy an exceptional view of the 'Roof of Europe'. The hotel also has a small well-being area that features a sauna and a large jacuzzi, perfect after a long day on the slopes. The ever-present wood in the decor gives it its pleasant atmosphere.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

Boasting a Michelin star, the restaurant at the Auberge du Bois Prin is managed by chef Raphaël Vionnet. In the summer, its dishes are made from ingredients grown in the hotel's organic garden. The soberly decorated dining room is arranged in a way that best showcases the view of Mont Blanc, and rightly so. What makes the place even more attractive are the prices, which aren't too steep. Guests can enjoy a set menu for approx. £23 at lunchtime or approx. £37 in the evening. Lovers of fine food will adore the gastronomic set menu, which costs approx. £80 per person and includes some fine wines.

The restaurant is open both at lunchtime (12:00pm to 2:00pm) and in the evening (7:00pm to 9:30pm). Note, however, that it is closed at midday on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This is also where guests can enjoy the copious gourmet breakfast as they admire the view from the many bay windows.

    To know

The Auberge is closed from mid-April to mid-May and then in November.

The hotel has its own private and secure car park.

Like the Le Hameau Albert 1er hotel, which is run by Pierre Carrier, the Bois Prin was founded by the Carrier family. It is currently run by Denis Carrier, the brother of Pierre Carrier.

A Relais & Châteaux institution in Chamonix, the Hameau Albert 1er remains the upscale reference for accommodation at the foot of Mont Blanc. The restaurants, the spa, the rooms...everything is up to par for the cosmopolitan clientèle attracted to this chic but laidback ambiance. Only the site itself, alongside the railway track, isn't quite up to scratch.

There's a refined atmosphere to this modern and cosy hotel. In terms of facilities, the Best Western Le Morgane is one of the most comprehensive hotels in Chamonix with its spa and gourmet restaurant. It's only fans of traditional alpine decor who won't find everything to their liking.

The Grand Hotel des Alpes has been one of the historic places in Chamonix since 1840. We were completely won over by its central location, warm welcome, grand lounges, newly renovated guest rooms and amenities. Both a distinguished and friendly hotel.

With 107 guest rooms, Les Aiglons Resort & Spa is one of the big establishments in Chamonix. Its spa and heated outdoor swimming pool are particularly enjoyable. A modern, comfortable hotel with very good facilities but sorely lacking in charm.

Both standardised but faithful to the spirit of an alpine resort, the Prieuré is a large 91 guest room establishment. It may be functional but the decor and layout of the areas give it a touch of warmth. Unfortunately, it is located very close to the road.

This is the biggest hotel in Chamonix, both in terms of the size of the building and the number of guest rooms. The Alpina is a functional hotel where the guest rooms and panoramic restaurant afford a fantastic view of the town and Mont Blanc. It's a shame, though, that the establishment as a whole is somewhat lacking in character.

Transformed in 2011 from a 2 to a 3 star establishment, the Faucigny is a charming spot in the centre of Chamonix. The laidback ambiance and the Scandinavian-style decor make for a cosy hotel where a feeling of well-being resonates. The only thing we were disappointed with was the size of the rooms, which aren't always exactly functional.

Just a stone's throw from the centre of Chamonix, the Auberge du Manoir is perfect for holidaymakers seeking tranquillity. This discreet spot, with very comfortable guest rooms and a peaceful atmosphere, is the perfect place to go if you are looking to be pampered. The only thing that disturbs the peace and quiet here is the proximity to a relatively busy road.
