A Relais & Châteaux institution in Chamonix, the Hameau Albert 1er remains the upscale reference for accommodation at the foot of Mont Blanc. The restaurants, the spa, the rooms...everything is up to par for the cosmopolitan clientèle attracted to this chic but laidback ambiance. Only the site itself, alongside the railway track, isn't quite up to scratch.

    Location 7.83 /10

At the edge of the centre of Chamonix, between the railway track and the school section of Chamonix, the Hameau is 250m from the train station and 300m from the heart of the city. The market is within walking distance.

    Accommodation 9.40 /10

Even the fussiest of guests will have a hard time finding fault with the 24 guest rooms at the Albert 1er. Divided into 3 categories (petite, classique and luxe), the decor is a lovely mix of antique polished wood and modern furniture with special unique touches. The smallest rooms only measure 20m² while the luxury rooms cover twice that area. Some of the latter also have a balcony. The amenities include a safe, 2 huge LCD televisions, a minibar, a DVD player, and 24/7 room service. As for the bathrooms, they are equipped with a balneo bathtub and a shower (except in the petite rooms, which only have a bathtub). The luxury rooms also have a balcony.

With a more mountain-style ambiance (meaning an omnipresence of wood), the 12 rooms of La Ferme are slightly different. They are divided into luxury rooms measuring 40m² (some with a fireplace), and prestige rooms measuring 47m². In any case, they offer the same high level of comfort as the Albert 1er.

The Hameau also has a 70m² apartment for 4 people and two independent chalets for 4 to 6 people. Ideal for families...who can afford it.

    Overview 8.50 /10

It is the 4th generation of Carriers who manage the Albert 1er. The hotel's history began in 1903 as a modest guest house named the Pension du Chemin de Fer created by Joseph, the great grandfather of today's owner-operator, Pierre Carrier. Over the years, the Hameau Albert 1er has seen a rise in its quality and surface area, turning it into the establishment that it is today, ranked with 5 stars since 2011. The original building has remained the heart of the hotel. It encompasses the lobby, the Michelin star restaurant, the QuartzBar, a wine bar with a lounge ambiance, and the 24 guest rooms spread over 3 floors. Since 1997, the hotel has extended into 3 farms reconstructed in the valley using old wood from farms located at altitude. They include a spa with a surprising alpine ambiance, a second restaurant, and 12 guest rooms.

Built around the main entrance, the hamlet layout makes it possible to forget about the surrounding environment. The ambiance varies significantly between the classic trendy set-up of the main building and the rustic luxury of La Ferme.

    Food and drink 9.40 /10

The Albert 1er is also a restaurant. Marcel Carrier earned a Michelin star for his cuisine in 1967, while Pierre Carrier, his son, earned a second one in 1999. These precious distinctions are a symbol of the quality of the contemporary French cuisine served in a serene dining room that was restored in 2008. The service here is on a par with all the other services. Today it is Pierre Maillet, the son-in-law of Pierre Carrier, who manages the kitchen at the Albert 1er. A meal including a starter, main course and dessert à la carte will cost you around ?120 (£103).

The second restaurant was created in 1997. Called the Maison Carrier, the dishes here are made using local products and the prices are much more affordable. Stéphane Gassot proposes local traditional specialities in an old-style alpine decor. It is possible to eat outside on the terrace in the summer. There is a choice between several fixed menus, ranging from ?16 (£14, at lunchtime only) to ?35 (£30). The dish of the day costs ?13 (£11).

    To know

The Albert 1er restaurant has earned two Michelin stars and three Gault and Millau chef's hats.

The hotel got its name from Albert the 1st, a Belgian king and ardent skier who regularly stayed in Chamonix.

There is a private car park on site.

A chalet offering an exceptional view of Mont Blanc, the Auberge du Bois Prin has recently been awarded 5 stars and will delight those who like their privacy, tranquillity and fine food. You won't find ostentatious luxury or an endless number of facilities here, just comfort and peace and quiet.

There's a refined atmosphere to this modern and cosy hotel. In terms of facilities, the Best Western Le Morgane is one of the most comprehensive hotels in Chamonix with its spa and gourmet restaurant. It's only fans of traditional alpine decor who won't find everything to their liking.

The Grand Hotel des Alpes has been one of the historic places in Chamonix since 1840. We were completely won over by its central location, warm welcome, grand lounges, newly renovated guest rooms and amenities. Both a distinguished and friendly hotel.

With 107 guest rooms, Les Aiglons Resort & Spa is one of the big establishments in Chamonix. Its spa and heated outdoor swimming pool are particularly enjoyable. A modern, comfortable hotel with very good facilities but sorely lacking in charm.

Both standardised but faithful to the spirit of an alpine resort, the Prieuré is a large 91 guest room establishment. It may be functional but the decor and layout of the areas give it a touch of warmth. Unfortunately, it is located very close to the road.

This is the biggest hotel in Chamonix, both in terms of the size of the building and the number of guest rooms. The Alpina is a functional hotel where the guest rooms and panoramic restaurant afford a fantastic view of the town and Mont Blanc. It's a shame, though, that the establishment as a whole is somewhat lacking in character.

Transformed in 2011 from a 2 to a 3 star establishment, the Faucigny is a charming spot in the centre of Chamonix. The laidback ambiance and the Scandinavian-style decor make for a cosy hotel where a feeling of well-being resonates. The only thing we were disappointed with was the size of the rooms, which aren't always exactly functional.

Just a stone's throw from the centre of Chamonix, the Auberge du Manoir is perfect for holidaymakers seeking tranquillity. This discreet spot, with very comfortable guest rooms and a peaceful atmosphere, is the perfect place to go if you are looking to be pampered. The only thing that disturbs the peace and quiet here is the proximity to a relatively busy road.
