The Avra Imperial, opened in 2011, is a hotel that has been remarkably built over 17 acres affording it plenty of space. It is owned by Crete's quarrying magnate. Suffice to say that he knows all about stones and construction materials. The hotel is therefore superbly built, far exceeding the usual Greek standards. The style is modern and uncluttered, with a running theme throughout the entire property: symbols from the Phaistos Disc, believed to be the oldest Minoan writing. The reception area, with a ceiling height of 12m, is impressive, understated and stylish. Large lounge areas open onto the reception. The restaurant is set up in a large room, also with a high ceiling. Guests can dine on the pool side or on the shaded patio side.
The swimming pool is the centrepiece of the hotel. The main pool, that is, as there are no less than 120 pools in total. This immense (50m x 30m!) above ground swimming pool is surrounded by thick transparent glass panels, made from the material used for the cockpit windows of American F-15s! The reflection of the water therefore shimmers on all sides. Water is everywhere in this hotel: cascades, pools. There is another swimming pool, this one saltwater, measuring 700m². Lastly, there is yet another pool behind the Annex.
The hotel features an immense (2,500m2) spa, perfectly equipped with saunas, hammams, cold showers, heated mattresses and hydrotherapy treatments. Not forgetting another indoor pool with jets. There are also beauty treatment rooms and a fantastic Technogym with free access.
?Wi-Fi is available free of charge almost everywhere in the hotel. As is the case with many hotels, the speed is not exceptional when half of the hotel is streaming videos on their tablets at around 10 o'clock in the evening!
?There is a small church not far from the sea, adjacent to the well equipped and air-conditioned kids club. There is also a special children's pool.
