This is one of the rare hotels that meets international standards in the Chania region, in the west of the island. After a chaotic beginning due to erratic (and shady) management, the hotel has reached cruising speed after getting rid of its original clientèle of first generation Israeli Russians, now replaced by peaceful Scandinavians.

    Location 7.0 /10

Let's have a look at the western part of Crete. Less developed and arguably more authentic, it is home to the villages of Zorba and the landscapes of Kazantzakis, and bathes in the music of Hadjidakis. The mountains are green all year round, with water rushing down from the central mountains in torrents, olive groves glimmering in the summer sun, and the sea visible from almost everywhere. Chania (pronounced Hania) is the capital of this region, and Kolymbari, where the hotel is located, is about twelve miles from the superb Venetian city with undoubtedly the most beautiful port on the island. Kolymbari is a fishing village with typical taverns. It is known throughout the island as an important sanctuary of the Orthodox church. You can count on Popes and monks to choose the best locations! The hotel is on the beachfront but you do have to cross a small dead end road (and therefore rarely used) to reach it. 250m from the port.
The journey is easy via the local motorway. The ideal airport for reaching the hotel is Chania (Hania in Greek) 20 minutes away. Heraklion, better served, is one and a half hours away via a splendid road.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

The hotel has 328 guest rooms divided into several categories depending on their location or whether or not they have a swimming pool, which are private or shared. The standard rooms are called Deluxe rooms. Measuring 30m², they can accommodate 3 adults, with a sofa that can double as a bed. One large wall has the frieze of Phaistos (from the Phaistos Disk) while another has a large mirror facing the desk that also doubles as a dressing table. Finally, a floor-to-ceiling bay window opens out onto either a balcony or a terrace. The floor is wooden. The bathroom is separated by a green or orange glass partition that creates a stunning effect. A bathtub and a separate shower, toilets separated by a glass panel, which unfortunately is transparent (what perversity drives architects to expose toilets and the people using them!?), and a large designer wash basin. The terrace/balcony is furnished with a small sofa or two armchairs, and a table. Overall, a good-quality room. The Avra has guest rooms with a mountain view and a sea view.
There are also Deluxe rooms with a pool view and a sea view. They are 2m² bigger. Another available option: with a shared pool. These guest rooms run (sea view on one side) alongside a large swimming pool that is shared with the neighbouring rooms. Lastly, there are also guest rooms with a private pool, measuring approximately 4m x 3m.
The Family guest rooms have two rooms separated by a glass wall, with a sofa bed in one room and 2 televisions so everyone can watch their own programme.
The Suites are veritable suites with two separate rooms. With a sea view, with or without a pool. The ultimate is the 85m² Executive Suite with a large swimming pool and a fence for complete privacy.
The Annex is comprised of guest rooms and in particular suites. It is a hotel outside the main hotel as it is on the other side of the road. Protected from noise by the conference rooms and a restaurant, this part of the hotel is really quite pleasant. Don't be put off by the rather pejorative name of 'Annex'.
The Avra Imperial's obvious attraction is the guest rooms with a pool, It is clearly unbeatable in price for such amenities and has 115 such rooms.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Avra Imperial, opened in 2011, is a hotel that has been remarkably built over 17 acres affording it plenty of space. It is owned by Crete's quarrying magnate. Suffice to say that he knows all about stones and construction materials. The hotel is therefore superbly built, far exceeding the usual Greek standards. The style is modern and uncluttered, with a running theme throughout the entire property: symbols from the Phaistos Disc, believed to be the oldest Minoan writing. The reception area, with a ceiling height of 12m, is impressive, understated and stylish. Large lounge areas open onto the reception. The restaurant is set up in a large room, also with a high ceiling. Guests can dine on the pool side or on the shaded patio side.
The swimming pool is the centrepiece of the hotel. The main pool, that is, as there are no less than 120 pools in total. This immense (50m x 30m!) above ground swimming pool is surrounded by thick transparent glass panels, made from the material used for the cockpit windows of American F-15s! The reflection of the water therefore shimmers on all sides. Water is everywhere in this hotel: cascades, pools. There is another swimming pool, this one saltwater, measuring 700m². Lastly, there is yet another pool behind the Annex.
The hotel features an immense (2,500m2) spa, perfectly equipped with saunas, hammams, cold showers, heated mattresses and hydrotherapy treatments. Not forgetting another indoor pool with jets. There are also beauty treatment rooms and a fantastic Technogym with free access.
?Wi-Fi is available free of charge almost everywhere in the hotel. As is the case with many hotels, the speed is not exceptional when half of the hotel is streaming videos on their tablets at around 10 o'clock in the evening!
?There is a small church not far from the sea, adjacent to the well equipped and air-conditioned kids club. There is also a special children's pool.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

The Avra's main restaurant overlooks the pool. It serves a very generous and varied breakfast buffet, which is constantly replenished. A gluten-free buffet and an organic buffet are also available, not to mention a fun buffet designed especially for children. Lunch and dinner are also served in the form of an equally varied buffet. Themed meals (Cretan, Italian, etc.) are held several times a week. You will also find a rather improbable Chinese restaurant, also of good quality, and an Italian restaurant opposite the second pool. Finally, you can find snacks on the beach as well as various bars scattered around the resort and the beach.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The beach is sandy up to the water's edge, where the sand gives way to pebbles. The other way around would have been preferable, but there we are. The huge beach stretching out over several miles is equipped with mattresses and parasols (free of charge), and showers. Like all the beaches on the north coast, the sea can be rough in August, the month of the strong meltemi winds. Water sports are available nearby.

    To know

The hotel is open during the summer season, from April to the end of October. It is a U-shaped building to which a diagonal branch has been added, not to mention an annex at the rear connected to the central building by an elegant bridge.
