Hotel The Legend Chiang Rai Hotel 4 star
Tha Nam Road, Moo 21, T. Robwiang Chiang Rai, Thailand
Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Legend Chiang Rai is defined by its many different facets: the various buildings imitating Ianna Thai architecture, with red bricks, wood, and white walls, and the Mae Kok river edging it, emphasising the area's natural side. This hotel dedicated to rest and relaxation immediately hits you with the feeling of well-being it exudes. However, if you have a closer look, it doesn't seem to be that well-maintained. The Legend proves to be a little less luxurious than you may once have thought. However, this doesn't take anything away from its discreet charm, reinforced by its beautiful location along the river.

    Location 10.0 /10

The hotel is located along the Mae Kok river, about 15 minutes from the centre of Chiang Rai.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel's guest rooms are housed in little bungalows nestled in the middle of the garden. In total, there are 78 lodgings spread out amidst the foliage of the garden and among the artificial little streams, a reminder of the nearby river.

Only available as doubles (with a double bed or two twin beds), the rooms all boast the same set-up, with wooden furniture and refined lines in the bathrooms. The result is very effective! We appreciated the large shower in the bathroom, as well as the orchids, and the polished wood, but to offer a truly luxurious atmosphere, this place lacks in attention to detail. The result: the rooms really are very pleasant, even if they try to present themselves as more chic then they actually are.

We really appreciated their terraces though, which have a swing seat and coffee table, and are the only place you can smoke within your lodgings. This being said, you won't be too happy with the spacing of the various bungalows, which means you'll be a lot closer to your neighbours than you may find comfortable.

The only 'bedroom villa' has its own private swimming pool (with a jacuzzi) and boasts views of the river.

    Overview 6.70 /10

This hotel is in harmony with the Ianna Thai architecture of the region, perfectly imitating its spikes and sloped rooftops. It consists of various spaces that open onto the garden and its little streams, which themselves run down to the banks of the Mae Kok river. This relatively recent establishment opened its doors in 2004 and belongs to 2 Swiss owners.

When arriving, you will first arrive at the hotel's exterior courtyard, which has a rather effective set-up with its fountain and ancient tuk-tuk bicycles parked to the side. Reception is just a few steps from here in an entirely open space looking onto the garden, towards the riverbanks, the swimming pool and the restaurant. The latter two are directly on the Mae Kok riverbank, giving them a nature-filled atmosphere that is both calm and soothing. Boat outings on the river are available, and leave from a small landing stage.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The main restaurant (the only one at the hotel) is open from 6:00am to midnight. It is located in a building that is topped with an Ianna-style roof, in keeping in harmony with the rest of the architecture, and can hold up to 100 guests. Open onto the outside and offering views of the river, breakfast here is served buffet-style and includes a large number of international options (most of the clientele is European).

Lunch and dinner are available as either a buffet or à la carte, and consist of Thai and international dishes.

    To know

There is a spa within the hotel, where traditional Thai massages as well as the usual beauty treatments are all on offer. Moreover, the views over the river from the massage rooms, which are completely open to the Mae Kok, are simply divine.
