The colourful funky Scandic Frontis a small young contemporary hotel that is part of the largest Scandinavian hotel chain, Scandic. It is the most urban of the group, with street art works hanging in various places. The hotel is in a prime location right on the canal in Nyhaven, from where pretty much everything is accessible on foot. The area is extremely busy but if you need a quiet retreat the hotel is calm. The hotel has an urban edge to it, from the reception to the rooms. The hotel often hosts street art exhibitions in its lobby, near the washrooms downstairs and in the bar area. The water-front restaurant is a bit more neutral and welcomes a varied clientele. The Scandic Front is ideal for young couples and groups of friends.

    Location 5.38 /10

The Scandic Front is located in the heart of Nyhavn, literally meaning 'new harbour' in Danish. The area is ideal as it is easy to get to most place of interest on foot, including the Little Mermaid, the castle park and ruins, Bredgade, where you'll find the Design Museum and various furniture stores. The picturesque Nyhavn is worth exploring, although do brace yourself for the hordes of tourists and don't fall into the tourist-traps - most restaurants on the harbour are expensive and not as good quality as those you'll find further back.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

There are 132 rooms in total with a range of categories varying in size and view. The duplex rooms on the higher floors are the latest to have been refurbished to a modern and colourful Danish standard. The rooms on the 6th floor have complimentary coffee-making facilities as well as bathrobes. All rooms have a mini-bar and safe. All rooms also have balconies or French windows that open onto a lovely view of the 'Black diamond', as the theatre is nicknamed. The rooms have original urban art hanging on the walls, adding a personal touch. Some rooms are decorated in neutral browns and beiges whereas elementary colours have been used in others. The rooms have black Wenge stained furniture and large flat-screen televisions. Unlike most hotels in the city, the Scandic Front actually has real double beds and a single double duvet - whereas most hotels tend to follow Scandinavian tradition and have two mattresses put together along with two single duvets. All rooms have showers and no bathtubs, save one, the Harbour Suite, which has a Jacuzzi. The bathrooms all have soap dispensers, so if you like your toiletries, bring your own. Every room has a bin with several compartments for litter-sorting, which shows the hotel's green values. The hotel doesn't guarantee rooms, but you can always place a request at the time of booking.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel opened in 2009 and has 6 floors. The hotel was actually renovated last year (2010), to give it that extra contemporary edge it was lacking before. The entrance is on a quiet street just off the busy canal. Inside the modern lobby you'll find a small shop to the left, the bar area further on and to the right is a seating area with colourful modular furniture - here you'll find lots of arty magazines, brochures as well as free newspapers. This space also serves as a street art gallery. Further to the right, through the lobby seating area is the hotel water-front restaurant. Just outside is the 'Beach', where there is a tiny vintage-looking playground for adults, which is ideal in the summer. The hotel has some fun touches, like the colourful art pieces and the blackboard at reception, where guests are welcome to leave notes and comments. There is also a pleasant gym (open 24hours) to the left of the restaurant with a lovely view of the canal (free of use for guests) and a massage room - on demand only. Guests also have access to a multisport ground adjoined to the gym area. The hotel is young and the staff is dynamic but the atmosphere tends to be calm despite the young clientele. The seating area in the lobby is rarely used and the bar area, although pleasant, is also quiet on most evenings, which is ideal for a quiet drink. The waterfront restaurant is extremely pleasant all day round, especially in the summer, when the French doors open onto the canal.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

We liked the bar to the left of reception, which also doubles up as a breakfast bar. Dark and moody with contemporary designer furniture and paintings of skulls hanging on the walls, the atmosphere remains cosy. It's a little dark for breakfast though. The main restaurant at the water side is extremely pleasant, especially in the summer, when the French doors open onto the canal. All Scandic hotels have the same menu, so you will find pretty much the same selection of Mediterranean fare here as any other Scandic hotel in the city. The restaurant has dark carpets, but the crisp white table cloths give it a more sophisticated edge. Room service operates on par with the main restaurant kitchen.

    To know

The hotel does not have family rooms but does have a small indoor kids' play area just outside the restaurant. Wi-Fi access is complimentary throughout the hotel. The hotel has no designated parking but there is a parking lot three blocks away. Remember that parking in the city is free at weekends.

The rustic maritime Copenhagen Admiral Hotel is a converted warehouse with a well-known restaurant that is also popular with the locals in the evenings. Set in prime location right on the canal in Nyhavn, the hotel boasts some lovely canal views from its rooms. It has a wide-ranging clientele mainly comprised of cruise liner tourists on a stopover, which can cause a bit of hubbub during check-in and check-out times. The converted warehouse concept looks great, but the atmosphere feels a lot more impersonal and more sales-oriented than at other smaller Copenhagen hotels.

The 71 Nyhavn Hotel is small, cosy and charming despite it not being at the height of contemporary Danish design. Set at the very end of the touristy Nyhavn harbour, the hotel is in a prime location between the crowds and the canal, with most of its rooms offering splendid harbour views. The hotel is a small boutique affair with a restaurant and lovely canal views. The decor is a little old fashioned, although well-maintained, and may be better-suited to the older generations, although you will find a good mix of ages and nationalities here. The main advantage of the hotel is the staff friendliness and the location as everything is more-or-less within walking distance.

Walking into the 4-star Phoenix hotel is like walking into a time-warp of Louis XVI kitsch. It isn't to everyone's taste, so have a look at the photos before booking your stay. Not a designer Danish item in sight, this hotel is probably better-suited to an older generation that prefers good old fashioned wardrobes to a handful of hangers hanging off a few pegs on the wall. Location is the hotel's strong point - two minutes away from the Design Museum, it is surrounded by high-end Danish furniture design boutiques. If frills and flowers are your thing, then you'll find them in abundance here! The hotel's main clientele is made up of cruise customers on a stopover.

The First Hotel Skt Petri is one of the most contemporary design hotels in the city buy doesn't it know it. Staff here is aware of the hotel's reputation and for some reason aren't as friendly or warm as staff we have come across at other hotels in the city. Otherwise the hotel looks great, despite feeling a little bit like a shopping centre complete with escalators at the front door. Its location just behind the university library is however a lovely area to explore with lots of trendy bars, restaurants and shops. The hotel is well-suited to guests who are looking for a design hotel without an intimate atmosphere.

A small charming and cosy floating hotel that doesn't have much to offer in terms of facilities, but that is ideal for a different experience of the city. This 'boat-el' is one of a kind in the city and sits immobile on the bank close to the Islands Brygge harbour. Down on the water, the hotel is ideally placed for romantic sunset views over the water and if you like the idea of sleeping over the water, then this is the place to stay. It has two floors and a beautiful sundeck, which is the highlight of the hotel. CPH Living is close to the city centre and to the quieter Islands Brygge, which makes it a great base to explore the rest of the city from.

Hotel Twenty-Seven is one of the trendiest hotels in the Danish capital, and although it looks good, the experience was extremely disappointing, especially the crowded and low-quality breakfast. The hotel's location is one of its advantages as it is situated right in the city centre close to small winding backstreets known as the 'Marais of Copenhagen' and it is here that you will find a plethora of trendy bars and restaurants. The contemporary Twenty-Seven is ideal for those of you looking for a stylish hang-out to explore the rest of the city from. The hotel otherwise welcomes a range of guests, from families to groups and couples.

The three star Danmark Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in the city and it shows. The entire hotel is in bad need of a refurbishment as the decor is extremely old fashioned. So if you are after a bit of old-school Denmark before Arne Jacobsen played his hand at design (so before the 1960s), then this is the place for you. Like most hotels in the Danish capital, there is no restaurant serving lunch and dinner although it does have a partnership with the establishment next door. The hotel is centrally located two minutes from Radhuspladsen from where you can walk to most places.

Located between Copenhagen city centre and trendy upper-end Friedriksberg, just off one of the city's main shopping streets, Vesterbrogade, the hotel is surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants to try out. The boutique hotel was set up by Thurgut and his partner and their spirit shines through the personal service. Casual and friendly, guests feel at ease right away here. The hotel is an ideal place to stay for a range of guests, from couples to groups and families. A good budget option to explore the rest of the city from.

A Small Leading Hotel of the World, the Nimb Hotel is without doubt the best hotel in the city. A hard assertion to make about any hotel as it is rare to find a hotel that satisfies all the necessary requirements to make it a top hotel, but at the Nimb every detail has been studied closely to make it the perfect haven of peace and tranquillity whilst right at the heart of the city. Adjoined to Tivoli Gardens, the Nimb has a Michelin starred restaurant and an award-wining bar. The country home style rooms are luxurious whilst being extremely contemporary and comfortable. The hotel is perfect for a romantic break, and although it is rare to see children at the hotel, as it is in Tivoli Gardens itself, it could also be a good option for families. If you have the budget, there is no hotel that would come as highly recommended hotel as the Nimb.

Not only is the Bella Sky the biggest hotel of the city, but it is also the largest hotel in Scandinavia. Although not located within the city centre, it is a hotel that is worth staying at if you are a huge fan of large spaces and vertical gardens. Guests staying here must have access to a car as there is nothing at all in the surroundings. The hotel has proved to be popular with ladies for its 17th floor strictly reserved for females. Fun with lots of space for children, the monumental shopping-centre -like hotel looks great as far as its interiors are concerned, but feels empty and lacks atmosphere. The Bella Sky would have been a huge hit if it were in the city centre.

The newly-opened Tivoli Hotel is the product of a fusion of the hotelier Arp-Hansen and Tivoli Gardens. The result is a large scale themed city resort that caters for families with young children. Brimming full with colours, you will find the various themes of Tivoli Gardens used here too such as the lampposts, the harlequin pattern and so on. The hotel has been extremely well designed and despite its colours and theme-park look, it doesn't look tacky; it hasn't fallen into the Disneyworld category, so rest assured. It is a great place to take young children, if you're into that kind of thing. The highlight of the hotel for adults? The Sticks'n'Sushi Sky Lounge on the 12th floor, which gives a whole other dimension to the hotel.

This four star hotel is one of the best hotels in the city. Spotless and extremely pleasant, the Kong Arthur is also well-located between Norrebro train station and the trendy area of Norrebro. The hotel is in a small courtyard just off a main road that lines the lake (that looks akin to a canal). The service is flawless as are the hotel facilities. The rooms are spacious and despite a more or less subtle Medieval theme running through the decor, they are pleasant to spend time in. The hotel isn't much of a family hotel as it is fairly quiet, but it doesn't discourage them. The clientele is mainly made up of businesspeople and couples of foreign tourists. The hotel is ideal if you need some time out a little way from the busiest areas of the city.

The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is one of the city's main landmarks and few five star hotels. If you know what you are looking out for, then you will be able to appreciate its unusual structure that was especially avant-garde back in sixties' Copenhagen, when the architecture was still extremely traditional. It was an extremely popular hotel that marked the beginning of the era of designer-extraordinaire, Arne Jacobsen, whose name you will probably hear time and time again as you visit the Danish capital. The hotel has recently been renovated but its 60s spark has somewhat died away. The hotel is still a good place to stay, with lots of Jacobsen furniture - his original suite has even been left just as it was and is now open for visits. The hotel is a good option for all kinds of guests, from couples to groups of families.

STAY Copenhagen is a residential concept and the large stylish monochrome loft apartments on offer are one of the best bets in the city accommodation-wise if you don't want to be surrounded by tourist traps and you're looking for some of that minimalist Danish design. The hotel often welcomes celebrity guests looking for a low-key hideout in the city. Guests are given all the intimacy they wish but friendly and efficient staff is at hand to provide them with anything they wish. The boutique Avenue Hotel was one of our favourite hotels in Copenhagen as it is the perfect all-rounder whether you're looking for a quiet getaway for a romantic weekend, or whether you want a pied--terre for exploring the city from with your family. The hotel's only major disadvantage is that it is located a few minutes' walk further out of the city than the other hotels we stayed at, but it is close to a metro station, Forum, making it easy to get to from the airport. The highlights of this quaint boutique hotel are its stylish yet low-key interiors and its terrace. Its cosy living room-cum-bar stocked with hand-picked isn't bad either. The Avenue is marked by Danish design, but it's a lot lower key than one might expect of Copenhagen, which gives the hotel a homely feel.
