It's almost as if this hotel has been placed accidentally in the wrong resort. Although situated in Costa Adeje, it is more like the bulk of hotels up in the north. By that we mean that it is fairly old fashioned in terms of décor and atmosphere, there is little for kids and it is popular with the older generation. Its rooms are comfortable if not somewhat dated, there are several very good standard eating options and it is has a modest but very agreeable wellness centre which make the Palace a great option if you are looking for a peaceful break with no kids (although they are welcome) and attention to detail.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Palace is located away from the main focal point of hotels, along with a handful of others, at the western end of the southern resort of Costa Adeje. It is true to say that there is little of touristic interest, beside the beach, in the immediate vicinity of the hotel however this does mean that it is a little more tranquil. The closest beach, Playa del Duque, is just a few minutes' walk away behind the resort. If you are arriving by car then you'll find space to park in front of the hotel, if not in the roads around. The island's southern airport is 17 miles away, while the northern airport is 53 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.75 /10

There are three categories of room at the Palace called simply small, medium and large. The décor in each is pretty drab and dated although they are comfortable, clean and have sea views. The small rooms, which are still of a decent size, have the standard desk, bedside tables, wardrobe and armchair all in a light wood and the amenities include regular television, safe (2? per day), telephone, fridge and radio. The bathrooms are a little more modern and have a bathtub with shower, a bidet, hairdryer and basic toiletries. There is also a good size balcony with plastic garden furniture which has a view of the pool, gardens and sea. The medium sized rooms have exactly the same amenities aside from extra table and chairs and a slightly larger balcony. The large rooms are again similar with the addition of a sofa. First time guests receive a bowl of fruit on their first day and a bottle of cava on their second.

    Overview 7.75 /10

Stepping into the lobby is a bit like travelling back in time, with a décor and furniture which doesn't seem to have changed for years, despite being in a perfectly acceptable condition. At the centre of the hall is a round table upon which is a huge arrangement of birds of paradise flowers above which is a stained glass dome. On the left hand side is the reception desk from behind which a warm welcome is extended to all guests. It is here in the evenings, while the pianist is entertaining the crowds waiting to enter the dining room for dinner that a great atmosphere is created with the sound of chatter and laughter as the bar chief directs the pianist as if conducting an orchestra. Also in the lobby you'll be able to take advantage of the complimentary wifi or use the coin-operated PCs for surfing the internet. Outside, just next to the areas shared with the Arecas, you'll find three swimming pools (one for kids) which are all heated in the winter. There is heaps of space around all three pools in which to sunbathe and also in further out towards the well maintained gardens. Here there is no problem either of the accommodation buildings blocking the sun's rays meaning a full day of bronzing is quite possible. From here, it is only a short stroll to the beach just behind the hotel.

If you're after some relaxation indoors, then the 'Body Love wellness centre is the place for you. It's not the largest or most impressive centre on the island, but it has a good range of treatments including massages, facials and aesthetics and is proudly managed by its delightful owner. There is a relaxation area looked down upon by a huge bronze sun while the treatment rooms themselves are well conceived. It also boasts two jacuzzis, a sauna and two cosmetic rooms as well as a basic fitness room. In another form of relaxation, there is a show every night of the week which takes place in the bar salon which has a purpose built stage and good sound and light system. There are 15 different shows in total so you are unlikely to experience the same one twice. Performances include flamenco dancing, Spanish dancing with castanets and a Gloria Estefan tribute act.

Other amenities at the hotel include a children's playground, tennis court, ping pong and pool tables. The general condition of the hotel is very good and the place is clean. Access to the rooms is quick, easy and pleasant via the corridors lined with greenery and modern paintings or the lifts in which music plays softly.

    Food and drink 7.75 /10

The main buffet restaurant, which is in a semi-circular shape, is quite smart with columns lining the room and grand chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The well laid tables welcome guests, who keep the very same table throughout their stay, at two sittings each night. Breakfast and dinner is served at this restaurant (lunch can be bought at the snack bar if required) and the choice of dishes is very good with options for vegetarians too. As for the quality of the food, this too is impressive, as is the service. For something a little more special, the à la carte Krystal Restaurant is the place to head. A very slick affair indeed with tall, white contemporary seating around immaculately laid tables with a beautiful service, this small eatery with sea views offers a fusion cuisine in an excellent setting and has a very good choice of wines.

In terms of bars there is the pool bar, which also serves light snacks during the day at an extra cost as well as all kinds of beverages to relax with by the pool. There is a second bar in the lobby which is best in the evening when the pianist is tinkling the ivories and a third in the very red bar salon where the evening's shows take place.

    To know

The Palace is one of four RIU hotels on the island, one of which, the Arecas, is situated right next door. In fact, due to their close proximity, they share both a beautifully mowed lawn and palm tree filled garden as well as the wellness facilities at the Palace. Note that while children are welcome here at the Palace, parents with kids will have to look after them throughout the entire stay as there is no kids club.

The Costa Adeje Palace is yet another great property from the Spanish chain H10. Perfect for both families and couples, it has that little extra something in each department which helps it distinguish itself from the crowd. As well as the quiet location, the hotel has the interior setting to go with it with pleasant grounds and a laid back atmosphere. The Privilege Club, also found at some of their other hotels, is a definite plus point. Strongly recommended by easyvoyage.co.uk for those looking for something more than your run of the mill Tenerife hotel.

The Arecas is a good choice for couples, older rather than younger, who are looking for a hotel away from the hubbub of the town centre, close to the beach and with perhaps a little old-fashioned charm. It certainly isn't the most modern or aesthetically pleasing of Tenerife's hotels (although the exterior isn't bad) but it does comfortable, functional rooms, a large restaurant with decent food and excellent staff. Children are very welcome at the Arecas, although there is no kids club or activities dedicated to them. Certainly worth a punt if you're not bothered by the dated décor and lack of animation.
