Barcelo Lanzarote resort is the second resort of the same chain on the island. Both are in Costa Teguise. The resort is one of the largest on the island and resembles somewhat of a 'holiday estate' due to its large (despite being low-rise) concrete structure. However, it does have some great facilities for families, meaning that families with babies do not need to lug cots, baths, changing tables and the like. The resort also has the best kids' club on the island. Beach fans, worry not as although the resort isn't on the seafront, the beach is a short walk away. Barcelo Lanzarote is ideal for families who want to have elaborate facilities for young children and who don't want to spend too much. However, as there isn't much to see in the surroundings, we strongly advise guests to hire a car for a couple of days to explore the rest of the island, which is without a doubt worth it due to its endless lava landscapes and beautiful beaches. This resort is also a good choice for sports fans as there are a number of activities on offer as well as various games courts for guest use.

    Location 6.25 /10

The Barcelo Lanzarote is located in Costa Teguise, east of Arrecife, the capital. Costa Teguise is not to be confused with Teguise, the small inland village. Costa Teguise is set on the sea front and is close to other hotels and a handful of bars, shops and restaurants. Like other tourist hotspots, there isn't much in the surroundings in the way of Spanish culture or sightseeing. There is a small sandy beach, Playa Jablillo, a short walk away but it does get fairly crowded in high-season. Barcelo Lanzarote is the larger of the two Barcelo resorts on the island. The smaller Barcelo La Galea is also in Cost Teguise.

    Accommodation 7.25 /10

In total there are almost 400 rooms split into four categories: double, double superior, junior suites and family suites. The rooms are spacious and look clean and neat, painted in white and fitted with white tiles. In the family suites, there are special facilities for families, which is a strong point at the Barcelo Lanzarote. These include baby changing and sleeping facilities, meaning that parents don't need to pack all that extra weight to go on holiday. They also include Wii game sets for older children. All rooms have double beds, sofa, air-conditioning, old generation televisions in most rooms (superior rooms have flat-screen televisions), a safe (deposit required before use), a refrigerator and a balcony. All bathrooms are fitted with bathtubs and own-brand amenities. Wi-fi is included in superior room packages only; otherwise guests can obtain a code from the front desk. The rooms are on the whole spacious and comfortable, clean and fresh but the views leave to be desired. If you have a preference of the view, do mention it at the time of booking and double check your booking with the hotel directly. The furniture isn't of the best quality and there is still a severe case of vile matching bed spreads and curtains, which seems to be the trend in any hot cheap and chearful tourist spot! The bathrooms are otherwise spacious and are all fitted with bath tubs. There are Barcelo own-brand amenities in all bathrooms. If you need a spacious room, the extra spend is worth it.

    Overview 7.25 /10

Built in 1996 the Barcelo Lanzarote is one of the largest resorts on the island composed of seven sandy-coloured terraced buildings spread over two floors. Despite the low-rise structure, the concrete building feels intimidating. Most of the interiors are spread over a large floor area but are low-ceilinged and dark. The dťcor is dull and drab throughout the hotel.

There are three large swimming pools open from 9 am to 8 pm. Two are heated with music played throughout the day. There is also a children's pool. The unheated third pool is located farther away, in a more peaceful area near the sports fields, for guests looking for peace and quiet away from entertainment and children. Showers and toilets are located nearby. Towels are available at reception in exchange of a 12 euro deposit. The hotel offers lots of sports and activities including mini-golf, two multi-sports and tennis courts as well as football basketball, handball and beach volley. Guests also have access to a Jacuzzi (at a 3 euro cost for 30 minutes).

The Barcelo Lanzarote feels very much like a resort-estate with an impersonal atmosphere, despite the staff being very friendly. However, it caters very well for children - it has an enormous and amazing new kids' club with lots of indoor climbing frames, games and instructors with bags of energy.

Otherwise the newly-built spa is worth a visit at least once during your stay here as it is by far one of the best hotel spas on the island. It has its own access from the road so guests do not have to cross the entire hotel.

    Food and drink 7.25 /10

The restaurant is located in the centre and basement of the resort so that it can easily be accessed by all guests. It is very large room with a sky light; however it is still dark. The restaurants tends to get very busy making meal times hectic and giving the restaurant a canteen atmosphere. Guests have a choice between several meal plans, from self-catering to all-inclusive. Most tend to choose all-inclusive as this tends to be better value for families, which is the main client base of the resort. The food is otherwise a mix of international specialities. There are theme nights but for a detailed plan it is best to enquire directly with the hotel as it tends to vary from season to season. Breakfast is served from 8 am to 10:30 am, lunch from 1 pm to 3 pm and dinner from 7 pm to 10 pm. Every Tuesday, the restaurant presents a special Canarian evening. The choice of bars is varied, with a choice of the coconut pool snack bar open from 10 am to 6 pm, the piano bar in the lobby with a musical ambiance from 5 pm to 1 o'clock in the morning, and the Timanfaya bar (the name of the volcano park), where you can watch shows from 8 pm to 1 o'clock in the morning. This bar is brightened up by small pools with fountains.

    Beach 6.50 /10

The resort is not on the beach but a free shuttle drops guests off at the Playa de las Cucharas beach, every half-hour from 9:30am to 5:45pm. The journey takes 10 minutes. Beware as is can be very windy on the beaches, especially in Costa Teguise. The beaches in Costa Teguise aren't the best of the island, which has some beautiful sites. Your best bet is to hire a car and to explore Papagayo in the west or Famara Bay in the north.

The Occidental Allegro Oasis resort, not to be confused with its sister hotel, the Occidental Gran Playa also in Costa Teguise, is one of several large non-descript complexes found in the Costa Teguise area. One of the smallest tourist hotspots on the island, Costa Teguise is not to be confused with Teguise which is found further inland. This resort is ideal for families wanting to stay somewhere with all the regular facilities on offer such as a mini club, evening entertainment and the like. Due to its size, the hotel looks more like a shopping mall, so not ideal for holidaymakers looking for a small intimate ambience. Although the resort is newer than its sister hotel, the Occidental Gran Playa just 5 minutes away, it could do with a renovation to bring it into the 21st Century as the dťcor does tend to be on the drab side.

Playa Verde looks like a small non-descript resort like many on the island, however once inside, one realises that the resort is actually fairly large and distinguishes itself from the other hotels due to its large pool, which is the main focus of the hotel. The staff also looks fairly content with working at this resort, which can be felt in the service. There is a comfortable and warm atmosphere here, which is unusual for a resort of this size. Situated in Costa Teguise, the resort is ideal for families with children who love spending time at the pool.

The Nazareth apartments in Costa Teguise are in the 2 star category, but in reality, this is a 2 key establishment: this is a rating system that enables you to tell the difference between apartment hotels and hotels. Located at the heart of the village and only 250 m from the beach, the hotel enjoys an ideal location. With its typical Lanzarote architecture, this very charming establishment has a genuine authenticity that stands out on an island crammed with resorts and big hotel chains.

The all-suite Hotetur Lanzarote Bay resort is a medium sized resort of under 200 rooms. Alhtough it isn't the most stylish hotel on the island, the structure and dťcor have been kept simple and fairly basic, which gave the resort a clean cut look with a relaxed atmosphere that is suited to all types of guests from families to couples and groups of friends. Situated in Costa Teguise, not to be confused with Teguise, which is a small local inland village, is one of the smaller tourist spots on the island. It isn't too far from the airport, however the beaches are better towards the west and north of the island. The resort appears slightly clinical, but there are a few funky details that prevent it from falling into the ?boring' category. The good thing about this resort is that it is of manageable size, which makes a refreshing change from the huge large concrete structures found on the island; so this is a good compromise for holidaymakers looking for a cross between a small hotel but with an all-inclusive meals plan and evening activities.
