It all began in 1963 when a young couple purchased a small chalet with 9 guest rooms. 50 years later, the couple in question, Mr. and Mrs. Rochedy, are at the head of an institution with 41 guest rooms, one of the largest spas in the Alps and a Michelin star restaurant. The Chabichou may have chosen to rank itself as 'only' a 4-star establishment, but its restaurant gives it an extra two, and makes it one of the most well-known and luxurious hotels in Courchevel, where it is a pleasure to stay or to at least dine!

    Location 8.62 /10

The Chabichou is located on the outskirts of the village, just metres away from the French ski school and a few minutes from the shops, notably the Forum shopping centre.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

It took only 13 years for the Chabichou to go from 9 rooms to 25, and then to 41 rooms and suites. Since 1973, the Chabichou has been offering the same number of accommodations, from the individual room (three only), to the Alpes suite, and the Grand Confort rooms (which are the most numerous). While some of them have a very typical alpine-style decor, others are a bit more modern. The same goes for the flooring, with some being fitted with carpeting and others with a parquet flooring. Indeed, none of the rooms are the same. One floor is entirely renovated every year. While not all of the rooms have a balcony (although most of them do), they do all benefit from amenities worthy of a 5-star hotel, apart from the tea and coffee-making facilities. In the bathroom you will find a bathtub and a shower, Fragonard brand toiletries, a towel warmer and bathrobes. Upon your arrival you will receive free water bottles and chocolates.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Chabichou is first noticeable from the outside, with its two entirely white chalets. You can't miss them! Inside, the Chabichou style demonstrates the Rochedy family's desire to create a luxury yet family-friendly hotel and especially one without too much fuss, even if it's possible to run into a celebrity or two here! Because, as the family says, "comfort should be maximal and luxury never ostentatious". Guests thus enjoy a traditional alpine-style decor full of history rather than in one that is brand spanking new. After a complete renovation in 2003, the Chabichou launched a new adventure in December 2011 with the construction of a 1,800m² complex, under a ski slope, comprising a superb 1,100m² Carita-Décléor spa on two levels (a special mention goes to the four basins that make up the swimming pool), an organic bakery, a grocery shop and a bistro-style restaurant. The original part of the hotel houses the guest rooms, the Michelin-star restaurant and the bars. Here, in addition to wood, cats are king. In fact, one of the restaurants is even called the 'chabeauté' (loosely meaning 'beautiful cat')! If the many facilities are not enough, you can also participate in the organised activities, such as the cooking classes.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The Chabichou restaurant is probably the most well-known in Courchevel. In any event it is just as renowned as the hotel's guest rooms! The establishment didn't have to wait long before receiving its first Michelin star, and just five years later it was awarded its second one. Run by the owner, Michel Richedy, the restaurant proposes traditional French cuisine. Guests can choose from several set menus. Among these is the romantic 'Amoureusement': scallops, blue lobster, wild bass, Sologne venison and a mango-based dessert. You will really need to have an appetite to be able to finish this meal, even though the serving sizes are quite small to give diners the opportunity to have a taste of everything! Note that the Chabichou also proposes a set lunch menu (£48) and a set evening menu (£78 for outside guests and £60 for guests staying at the hotel). The dining room isn't very big but you will also have the option of dining in the kitchen or sectioning off some parts of the room to form a private area. Breakfast is served at the Chabeauté in the form of a buffet. You can also dine at completely reasonable prices: £25 for a 3-course meal, between £15 and £23 for an Asian dish, between £22 and £30 for a meat dish, and between £14 and £25 for a fish dish. You'll have understood by now that the possibilities at the Chabichou are seemingly endless!

    To know

Unlike the other establishments in the resort, the Chabichou is open nearly all year round, (it closes in the month of May and the first two weeks of June).

Opened in December 2009, the Strato is not just another 5-star hotel in Courchevel 1850. Carefully decorated in a modern-country style, the establishment boasts a Michelin star restaurant as well as a superb spa with a view of the slopes. This is an ideal spot for skiing, relaxing and enjoying good food all while forgetting about work!

Although you may see many luxury hotels in Courchevel, you won't see many palaces. In fact, there are just two: the Cheval Blanc and Les Airelles. Opened in 1992, the establishment is also catalogued by the luxurious Leading Hotels of the World chain. With its charming traditional decor, its Cellcosmet spa and its restaurants, including one with 2 Michelin stars, Les Airelles deserves its distinction. This is a great place to stay, provided you can afford it!

The K2 Hotel is located close to the centre of the Courchevel resort and the Croisette. This hotel village stretches along the Cospillot slope, offering guests an incomparable panorama of the valley and mountain massifs.

It's hard to recognise the Hotel Les Grandes Alpes, one of the oldest establishments in the resort, since it underwent a complete renovation. The establishment now offers a concept that is unique in the resort: apartments with a well-being centre and hotel service. Here, instead of rooms there are apartments, the smallest of which measures 150m². Don't bother looking for the restaurant as the accommodation comes with its own fully-equipped kitchen.

Opened in 1958, the Lana is an institution in the Courchevel resort. Renovated every year, this 5-star establishment is still under transformation, notably in a handful of bedrooms and its indoor swimming pool. However, the rest of the hotel was renovated as recently as 2010. A member of the Tournier Group, in the same category as the Saint Roch, the Saint Joseph and the Pralong, the Lana also benefits from an ideal location at the base of the slopes.

At a time when luxury hotels are popping up all over the streets of Courchevel 1850, the Manali is the only 5 star establishment in the 1650 resort. Far from the bling of the ritzy shops located at the highest point of the villages, the Manali rigorously holds onto its secrets, and what secrets they are. Other than the impeccable service and the irreproachable cuisine, the establishment has a decor and a theme all of its owned dreamt up by its owners. Add to this the two level 'Cinq Mondes' spa and no doubt about it, the Manali is one of our favourite places in all of Courchevel!

In addition to the bar and restaurant, the hotel also has a spa, a library, a lounge and a luxurious ski storage room.
