Opened in December 2009, the Strato is not just another 5-star hotel in Courchevel 1850. Carefully decorated in a modern-country style, the establishment boasts a Michelin star restaurant as well as a superb spa with a view of the slopes. This is an ideal spot for skiing, relaxing and enjoying good food all while forgetting about work!

    Location 8.37 /10

5 minutes by shuttle from the centre of the village, the Strato is located on the Cospillot slope. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes (by taxi) to 2h (in case of traffic) to reach the closest train station, namely the one in Moutiers.

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

Once you get a look at the lodgings, you won't be surprised to learn that there are only 25 at the Strato. While the smallest ones measure a very decent 25m², the largest ones cover more than 130m². Here, though, quantity doesn't mean anything until guests discover just what amenities await them, which is absolutely everything they could want. Should this not be the case though (if there is an urgent need for a DVD player, for example), you just need to ask at reception. The bathroom is a perfect example of the high standing of this hotel, with a television embedded in the wall opposite the bathtub (or the whirlpool bathtub in the suites). In terms of the decor, it is in keeping with the rest of the hotel (modern and inviting); it would be a shame not to enjoy it! We really liked the very soft fabrics that you just want to curl up in. The final fabulous touches are the black and white skiing photographs printed on the lampshades or on the wall.

    Overview 9.20 /10

The tone is set from the moment guests enter the hotel. The Strato is a display of finesse, elegance and modernity. Using just a handful of fabrics, the decorator was able to create a contemporary style which, although may be pleasant to look at, is often as sobering as the temperature outside. The two wooden sculptures standing at the entrance give a bit of warmth to the white counter and floor in the entrance hall. This style continues throughout the rest of the hotel and has really been executed quite nicely! Since opening in 2009, the Strato has not rested on its laurels. In 2011, just two years after opening, the hotel was already undergoing renovations. In addition to a ski shop (for renting and buying) and storage room, the hotel offers other facilities like a splendid spa where you can be pampered from head to toe. Here you will find an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, massage rooms, a relaxation room and a gym. All of it beautifully decorated and with a view of the great white outdoors!

    Food and drink 9.70 /10

If the facilities and the guest rooms haven't got you convinced, give the restaurant at the Strato a try for lunch or dinner. Not only does it boast two Michelin stars, the decor and service here is impeccable. While breakfast gets you off to a good start, the other two meals allow you to continue and finish off the day in style. Just looking at the menu with hints of Italian and French cuisine will make your mouth water. The chef also offers two set menus, the 'Tradition' (£132 per person for 5 courses) and the 'Evolution' (£165 per person for 7 courses) for the gourmets among you! Those with a smaller appetite can choose from the à la carte menu. Keep in mind that quality has a price: for example, some of the options include a creamy sweet chestnut soup for £84 and a chicken egg with black truffle from Provence for £72! Not to mention blue lobster for £93 and a leg of lamb for £157.

    To know

Like most of the hotels in Courchevel, the Strato is closed from mid-April to mid-December. Here, everything is included in the price, or almost, so you won't have to pay extra to use the hotel shuttle or the Wi-Fi connection. Note that pets are not allowed in the hotel.

Although you may see many luxury hotels in Courchevel, you won't see many palaces. In fact, there are just two: the Cheval Blanc and Les Airelles. Opened in 1992, the establishment is also catalogued by the luxurious Leading Hotels of the World chain. With its charming traditional decor, its Cellcosmet spa and its restaurants, including one with 2 Michelin stars, Les Airelles deserves its distinction. This is a great place to stay, provided you can afford it!

On 9 July 2014, the K2 Hotel obtained the distinction of palace, an additional recognition for a hotel whose gourmet restaurant obtained its second Michelin star in March. The K2 Hotel is located close to the centre of the Courchevel resort and the Croisette. This hotel village stretches along the Cospillot slope, offering guests an incomparable panorama of the valley and mountain massifs.

Opened in 1958, the Lana is an institution in the Courchevel resort. Renovated every year, this 5-star establishment is still under transformation, notably in a handful of bedrooms and its indoor swimming pool. However, the rest of the hotel was renovated as recently as 2010. A member of the Tournier Group, in the same category as the Saint Roch, the Saint Joseph and the Pralong, the Lana also benefits from an ideal location at the base of the slopes.

It's hard to recognise the Hotel Les Grandes Alpes, one of the oldest establishments in the resort, since it underwent a complete renovation. The establishment now offers a concept that is unique in the resort: apartments with a well-being centre and hotel service. Here, instead of rooms there are apartments, the smallest of which measures 150m². Don't bother looking for the restaurant as the accommodation comes with its own fully-equipped kitchen.

At a time when luxury hotels are popping up all over the streets of Courchevel 1850, the Manali is the only 5 star establishment in the 1650 resort. Far from the bling of the ritzy shops located at the highest point of the villages, the Manali rigorously holds onto its secrets, and what secrets they are. Other than the impeccable service and the irreproachable cuisine, the establishment has a decor and a theme all of its owned dreamt up by its owners. Add to this the two level 'Cinq Mondes' spa and no doubt about it, the Manali is one of our favourite places in all of Courchevel!

It all began in 1963 when a young couple purchased a small chalet with 9 guest rooms. 50 years later, the couple in question, Mr. and Mrs. Rochedy, are at the head of an institution with 41 guest rooms, one of the largest spas in the Alps and a Michelin star restaurant. The Chabichou may have chosen to rank itself as 'only' a 4-star establishment, but its restaurant gives it an extra two, and makes it one of the most well-known and luxurious hotels in Courchevel, where it is a pleasure to stay or to at least dine!

Opened in 1956, Le Melezin has preserved only the best of a distant era: the parquet floor in the communal areas. The rest has all been renovated over the years to give it its contemporary classical appearance. Despite the small number of guest rooms, Le Melezin offers a number of facilities. In addition to the bar and restaurant, the hotel also has a spa, a library, a lounge and a luxurious ski storage room.
