We liked this property very much and we're sure you will too. Tucked away off of a quiet street a few minutes' walk from the river front in Trouville, this newly renovated property has a good range of facilities and well appointed rooms as well as a peaceful location and pleasant staff. The hotel has a homely feel and is a good choice for those couples looking to benefit from what the area has to offer but without being in the eye of the storm.

    Location 4.54 /10

The Hostellerie du Vallon is situated on rue Sylvestre Lasserre, a peaceful road in Trouville-sur-Mer just across the tributary from Deauville. The main drag of shops and restaurants in the town is just a few minutes' walk away while Deauville town centre can be reached in 15-20 by foot. The Trouville-Deauville railway station is less than a 10 minute walk away while the Deauville-St. Gatien Airport is just 4 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The 61 rooms that make up the hotel's inventory are divided into three categories: standard, superior and prestige. The main differences between them are the size, the views and the colour schemes, the amenities remaining uniform. Each room has a queen bed with a diamond plaid strewn across it, the colour of which matches the rest of the room's upholstery as well as some of the lamp shades. Every room has a desk and chair while the larger ones also have a table and chairs to one corner. Many of the room have one feature wall painted a different shade to the rest while others have a more classic striped wallpaper. In terms of amenities every room has a flatscreen television, a safe and tea and coffee facilities (there are no minibars). All the rooms have a series of paintings on their walls, some depict marine scenes while others recall Hopper's style. Every category has some rooms with a balcony which look on to either the rooftops of Trouville or the hotel's garden. The relatively spacious bathrooms are all nicely tiled and have touches of the colour scheme found in the rooms. They feature large vanities, a shower or bathtub (some with corner balnéo affairs), hairdryers and toiletries from 'Le Soin au Naturel'. In our opinion, some of the nicest rooms in the town in terms of décor.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Take time while approaching the hotel to admire the typical Anglo-Norman architecture of the building's exterior. The timber, balconies and gabled roofs are all characteristic of the region's edifices. The lobby is a welcoming space with its false ceiling beams, smartly striped wallpaper and comfortable looking armchairs assembled around low coffee tables. To the right is a table full of newspapers and a stand with information on everything there is to do in the area, while to the left is the welcome desk where you'll be met with a smile and checked in speedily. Music plays in the background and fun drawings of 'gentlemen' playing games and equestrian scenes adorn the walls. An old cart lies in front of the reception to complete the scene.

The hotel has a small indoor pool with a jacuzzi as well as a sauna and hammam. A modest fitness room is also available to guests. Those fancying a less physical challenge can have a game of pool on one of two tables.

The public spaces of the hotel are in good condition and are clean and tidy. It is simple getting to one's room via the lifts and the corridors are spacious and easy to navigate.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Hostellerie du Vallon does not have a full blown restaurant, just a breakfast room where it serves a continental offering in the form of a buffet as well as basic hot dishes such as eggs. The room itself is bright due to both the natural light coming in through the picture windows and the colourful upholstery and there is a pleasant view of the garden outside. The hotel also has a 24h bar which boasts a fireplace for the winter as well as a little garden and terrace for use when the weather allows. The space, which is to be refurbished in October 2011 also has a piano which is used to entertain guests at various times of the week.

    To know

All of the rooms at the hotel were fully renovated in January 2011 which explains their healthy condition. The property has been a hotel for 15 years now before which time it was actually the mayor's house! It is part of the Best Western group of hotels and guests staying here can take advantage of a 15% discount on the green fee at the Deauville-St. Gatien golf course. The hotel is open all year round.

Although many travellers prefer to avoid hotel chains in order to find something original and new, the Mercure in Deauville is highly recommended for those looking for a good value hotel of a certain standard. This compact establishment is actually quite snazzy and very comfortable. It may lack the facilities of many of the other hotels in the town, but it has a good location and some of its own unique features such as the private park. There'll be no nasty surprises with this modern hotel suitable for couples, friends and families.

For a town with an already ageing hotel scene, the Hélios certainly does it no favours. It is the most basic of hotels and is not in the best condition, having not been renovated for decades. It does have its own outdoor pool, but aside from this there is little to warrant a stay at this establishment. We found it to be dirty, tired and pretty miserable and with prices in synch with the rest of the competition, we advise you look elsewhere unless there really is nothing else available. Fairly well-positioned, the Hélios can accommodate both couples and families.

A typical family-run bed and breakfast, the Marie-Anne is a decent little property located in the centre of Deauville. A little dated décor-wise, it has simple but comfortable rooms for up to three people and has a pretty little garden, perfect for those summer evenings after a day on the beach. With a homely feel and a smart breakfast room, the Marie-Anne is definitely worth considering for a weekend by the sea.

If you don't like surprises then the Ibis is the place for you. The great advantage of this type of hotel is that you know exactly what you are getting for your money and wherever you are in the world the standards and surrounding remain pretty much uniform. Well situated across from the station and next to the river, the Ibis offers basic rooms which are a little dated but it does have a full service restaurant and is in pretty good condition. Both couples and families will be comfortable here.

The Royal Barrière is a very similar product to its seafront sister the Normandy: a comparable décor (possibly a tad more old worldy), matching grandeur and the same standards of service and amenities and an equally enviable location. The difference is mainly in the clientele, with the hotel being geared more towards foreigners and couples than Parisians and families (though of course both are very welcome). But the Royal does have one up on its sister properties in the accommodation and restaurant categories with substantially larger rooms and the only Michelin-starred eatery in Deauville. All types of traveller will find their calling here.

The Almoria is a cute little hotel along the main artery of Deauville's centre. The main pull of the property is its nicely sized, well decorated rooms, some of which have pleasant inland views. What it lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in charm and both couples and families will feel at home here, due in large part to the laid back, down to earth staff. Although not right on the seafront, it is worth considering given some of the poorer alternatives closer to the beach.

The Côte Fleurie is everything that a typical seaside bed and breakfast should be which explains why it receives guests from as far away as South Korea! One of the quaintest little properties in Deauville, the Cote Fleurie offers a handful of individually decorated rooms which are by no means the best appointed in the town but have received a lot of love and attention! Although not situated right on the seafront, the charm of the place certainly makes up for this and whether you're coming to Deauville as a couple or a small family, you'll find all you need here and be warmly welcomed. A good choice for the traditionalists.

The Esperance is a quaint little bed and breakfast and one of the finest in Deauville. Run by a lovely couple (probably) in their sixties, it provides a home away from home in a quiet street close to the centre of town. The 10 comfortable rooms are spacious and completely different from one another while there are several pleasant and relaxing public spaces to enjoy too. Clean, nicely kept and with a few unique touches, this is a hotel perfect for couples coming to Deauville for the weekend. One to seriously consider!

The first of the all-mighty Barrière hotels to open in Deauville back in 1912, the Normandy still impresses almost a century on. It is, and always has been, along with its sister hotels, the finest establishment in the town and to be honest no other hotel we saw here puts this assertion into question. Boasting high quality traditional décor, well appointed rooms, stunning public spaces, fine facilities and a sea front location, if you have the money, there is no better way to spend it in Deauville. Whether you're in town on business or leisure, as a couple, family or group of friends, the Normandy will meet, and exceed, your needs and expectations.

Of the three Barrière hotels in Deauville, this one is our favourite. It's still fairly similar in style, but is a little bit less 'in-your-face' and stuffy with cleaner lines and shinier surfaces. For us what makes the Golf stand out is its location - ok, it's not right by the sea, but its elevated position and proximity to the golf course provides a stunning setting. The rooms are simple affairs but still well-appointed and the public spaces are well kept and the architecture pleasing to the eye. Although there are facilities for kids, the hotel is more suited to couples and groups of friends and of course those whose main concern is golf. Beach bums should perhaps stick to a hotel closer to the seafront.

By a long stretch the finest bed and breakfast in the town, Villa Josephine is a beautiful property with exquisite décor, spacious rooms and fine service. With only nine rooms it is also one of the smallest establishments in the town meaning that it is particularly quiet and that attention detail is that bit more focused. Great care has been taken over every aspect of the hotel and frankly it is difficult to fault it on any level! More of a couples retreat, this stunning villa is the place to come for that special weekend away by the sea. Try and get a reservation here before anywhere else!

La Closerie is one of the better hotels in Deauville. Strictly speaking it's actually what the French call a 'résidence', self contained apartments with some features of a hotel. The establishment is relatively modern, in good condition, has spacious rooms and good facilities and is centrally located. Great for families or large groups of friends travelling together, La Closerie is a good option for extended stays in Deauville all year round.

Despite its small size, the hotel has some great facilities which make up for its distance from both the town centre and seafront.
