The Esperance is a quaint little bed and breakfast and one of the finest in Deauville. Run by a lovely couple (probably) in their sixties, it provides a home away from home in a quiet street close to the centre of town. The 10 comfortable rooms are spacious and completely different from one another while there are several pleasant and relaxing public spaces to enjoy too. Clean, nicely kept and with a few unique touches, this is a hotel perfect for couples coming to Deauville for the weekend. One to seriously consider!

    Location 8.59 /10

Situated on rue Victor Hugo, a street leading to the quays, the hotel has a fairly quiet location, away from the hustle and bustle, but still just minutes away from the shops, restaurants and bars. If you wanted to walk to the seafront that would take about 10 minutes while getting to Trouville-Deauville train station would take a little less perhaps. The Deauville-St. Gatien Airport is roughly five miles away, around 10 to 15 minutes by car.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

Each of the hotel's 10 rooms is decorated in a different way, although the amenities remain uniform throughout. All of the rooms bar one measures 20m² and so they are relatively generous in size and comfortable to move around in. They are all painted carefully in single colours and have hardwood flooring (the disabled room has the original typical Normand tiling). The furniture consists of a wardrobe, desk, bedside tables, coffee table, armchair, stylish lamps, all in excellent condition and in some cases highly contemporary. You'll find fresh orchids in every room as well as a flatscreen television, telephone, different styles or mirror and photograph (safes should be installed before the end of 2011). The bathrooms, similarly, are all different but all are spacious and well appointed, many with stylish sink units and plenty of storage space, as well as hairdryers, toiletries and either shower cubicle or tub (some of which are corner tubs). Not only are they quiet due to their double glazing, but they are also in excellent condition and spotless.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The attention taken over the exterior of L'Esperance tells you everything you need to know about this charming establishment. With the inferior half painted an olive green and the superior half cream and white, it has perhaps the smartest frontage of any hotel in the town. The short, potted trees at either side of the entrance and the tied back drapes in the windows are a sign that here, attention to detail is of utmost importance. Inside, the hardwood-floored entrance hall and reception area are bright and welcoming with comfy seating, plants and smart wallpaper. The latter is dominated by a blown up photo of a mare and her foal in the English countryside and has a small wooden front desk from behind which you will be greeted heartily by M. or Mme. Bartert.

Between the main house and the low-rise building at the back is a delightful patio, full of greenery taken care of meticulously by the couple. As well as the garden furniture, you will notice a couple of pretty murals painted to one side as if extensions of the patio, done by an artist from nearby Caen. The rest of the hotel is extremely well maintained and is very clean and tidy with paintings and photography throughout. There is no lift at L'Esperance although the stairs are not particularly narrow or steep. There is complimentary wifi throughout the hotel and parking is free on the road outside.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

L'Esperance's breakfast room is situated to the left of the entrance hall and is dominated by the large-scale mirrors hung on the grey striped wallpaper. Several round tables are elegantly laid with heavy red table cloths and have flowers at their centres. There are two buffet points, one chilled, and between them is an almost life-size model of the personality of the well-know French chocolate drink Banania. A continental breakfast is offered comprising cereals, yoghurts, breads, patisserie, cold meats, cheeses, juices, tea and coffee as well as Mme. Bartert's own home baked cakes that she produces everyday!

    To know

L'Esperance hotel has been owned and run by Murielle and Patrick Bartert since they purchased it back in 1985. Open the whole year round, it has a real personal touch and guests will certainly feel at home in this typical Norman b&b. What's more, L'Esperance has one very spacious, adapted room set aside for those guests who use a wheelchair.

Although many travellers prefer to avoid hotel chains in order to find something original and new, the Mercure in Deauville is highly recommended for those looking for a good value hotel of a certain standard. This compact establishment is actually quite snazzy and very comfortable. It may lack the facilities of many of the other hotels in the town, but it has a good location and some of its own unique features such as the private park. There'll be no nasty surprises with this modern hotel suitable for couples, friends and families.

For a town with an already ageing hotel scene, the Hélios certainly does it no favours. It is the most basic of hotels and is not in the best condition, having not been renovated for decades. It does have its own outdoor pool, but aside from this there is little to warrant a stay at this establishment. We found it to be dirty, tired and pretty miserable and with prices in synch with the rest of the competition, we advise you look elsewhere unless there really is nothing else available. Fairly well-positioned, the Hélios can accommodate both couples and families.

La Closerie is one of the better hotels in Deauville. Strictly speaking it's actually what the French call a 'résidence', self contained apartments with some features of a hotel. The establishment is relatively modern, in good condition, has spacious rooms and good facilities and is centrally located. Great for families or large groups of friends travelling together, La Closerie is a good option for extended stays in Deauville all year round.

A typical family-run bed and breakfast, the Marie-Anne is a decent little property located in the centre of Deauville. A little dated décor-wise, it has simple but comfortable rooms for up to three people and has a pretty little garden, perfect for those summer evenings after a day on the beach. With a homely feel and a smart breakfast room, the Marie-Anne is definitely worth considering for a weekend by the sea.

If you don't like surprises then the Ibis is the place for you. The great advantage of this type of hotel is that you know exactly what you are getting for your money and wherever you are in the world the standards and surrounding remain pretty much uniform. Well situated across from the station and next to the river, the Ibis offers basic rooms which are a little dated but it does have a full service restaurant and is in pretty good condition. Both couples and families will be comfortable here.

At once a hotel and self-catering establishment, the Villa Gardenia offers basic yet comfortable accommodation on the Deauville seafront. The décor may not be to everyone's taste, but the hotel has a few assets such as its wellness facilities and location. For the most part clean, tidy and well maintained, the Villa Gardenia would suit all size groups of travellers for varying lengths of stay in the town. It lacks the charm of some of the other places to stay in Deauville but does have everything one needs for a seaside break.

The Almoria is a cute little hotel along the main artery of Deauville's centre. The main pull of the property is its nicely sized, well decorated rooms, some of which have pleasant inland views. What it lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in charm and both couples and families will feel at home here, due in large part to the laid back, down to earth staff. Although not right on the seafront, it is worth considering given some of the poorer alternatives closer to the beach.

The Côte Fleurie is everything that a typical seaside bed and breakfast should be which explains why it receives guests from as far away as South Korea! One of the quaintest little properties in Deauville, the Cote Fleurie offers a handful of individually decorated rooms which are by no means the best appointed in the town but have received a lot of love and attention! Although not situated right on the seafront, the charm of the place certainly makes up for this and whether you're coming to Deauville as a couple or a small family, you'll find all you need here and be warmly welcomed. A good choice for the traditionalists.

The Royal Barrière is a very similar product to its seafront sister the Normandy: a comparable décor (possibly a tad more old worldy), matching grandeur and the same standards of service and amenities and an equally enviable location. The difference is mainly in the clientele, with the hotel being geared more towards foreigners and couples than Parisians and families (though of course both are very welcome). But the Royal does have one up on its sister properties in the accommodation and restaurant categories with substantially larger rooms and the only Michelin-starred eatery in Deauville. All types of traveller will find their calling here.

The first of the all-mighty Barrière hotels to open in Deauville back in 1912, the Normandy still impresses almost a century on. It is, and always has been, along with its sister hotels, the finest establishment in the town and to be honest no other hotel we saw here puts this assertion into question. Boasting high quality traditional décor, well appointed rooms, stunning public spaces, fine facilities and a sea front location, if you have the money, there is no better way to spend it in Deauville. Whether you're in town on business or leisure, as a couple, family or group of friends, the Normandy will meet, and exceed, your needs and expectations.

Of the three Barrière hotels in Deauville, this one is our favourite. It's still fairly similar in style, but is a little bit less 'in-your-face' and stuffy with cleaner lines and shinier surfaces. For us what makes the Golf stand out is its location - ok, it's not right by the sea, but its elevated position and proximity to the golf course provides a stunning setting. The rooms are simple affairs but still well-appointed and the public spaces are well kept and the architecture pleasing to the eye. Although there are facilities for kids, the hotel is more suited to couples and groups of friends and of course those whose main concern is golf. Beach bums should perhaps stick to a hotel closer to the seafront.

By a long stretch the finest bed and breakfast in the town, Villa Josephine is a beautiful property with exquisite décor, spacious rooms and fine service. With only nine rooms it is also one of the smallest establishments in the town meaning that it is particularly quiet and that attention detail is that bit more focused. Great care has been taken over every aspect of the hotel and frankly it is difficult to fault it on any level! More of a couples retreat, this stunning villa is the place to come for that special weekend away by the sea. Try and get a reservation here before anywhere else!

The Augeval is a charming little hotel made up of two typical Norman villas, each one having its own distinctive style in terms of the room décor. Despite its small size, the hotel has some great facilities which make up for its distance from both the town centre and seafront.
