The Clarion, opened in 2001, is a pleasant modern hotel without much character. It is ideal for fans of hotel chains or, more generally, those looking for a good well-being centre! Apart from the massage rooms, sauna and hammam, the hotel also has a lovely large swimming pool, which is quite rare for the Irish capital. Neither too big nor too small, the Clarion Hotel enjoys a privileged location at the heart of the city centre, on the banks of the River Liffey.

    Location 6.61 /10

Perched on the banks of the River Liffey, the Clarion Hotel has taken up residence between the port area and the city centre. O'Connell Street, famous for its shops and restaurants, is just a ten-minute walk away.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

Almost all the guests at the Clarion Hotel are in the same category of accommodation; out of the 165 guest rooms, 100 are standard rooms. Only the number of beds varies (double, twin or four beds). Note that the hotel also has Executive rooms and Suites and that all of the accommodation is non-smoking. However, smokers can choose a room with a balcony. Built in 2001, the owners opted for a fairly standard modern decor: either carpeting or a parquet floor, wooden furniture, colourful bed throws, etc. In terms of the furnishings, it's a shame there's no minibar and the beds could be bigger (although they are brand-spanking new). No complaints about the rest (a large-screen plasma television, a safe, Wi-Fi and a free bottle of water) or the superb bathrooms. Note that 80% of these have an Italian-style shower. The lucky guests in the superior rooms also have chocolates, slippers and bathrobes provided.

    Overview 8.95 /10

Although the architecture of the building itself is sophisticated, the same is not true of the lobby, which has a rather dull interior. Two wooden counters and a bench: it could be a hotel lobby from any hotel chain. With 165 guest rooms, the Clarion is average-sized and is neither overly attractive nor off-putting. The real highlight is the well-being centre, which takes you far away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Here, the hotel has invested in a real spa, with a pool (18m), a steam room, massage rooms, a gym and a sauna. Open to the general public for a fee, the centre is free for guests staying at the hotel. However, the massages cost extra since they are provided by an external company.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

There's no point in describing the large room (divided in two) that is the restaurant, as it was due to be refurbished after our visit. Open from 6:30am to 10:30am (7:30am to 11:30am on weekends), from midday to 2:00pm and from 6:00pm to 9:30pm, the restaurant serves both classic and Asian dishes at lunchtime (Caesar salad for £7, Cajun chicken for £7.50, homemade lasagne for £11, fish and chips for £12, etc.) and exclusively Asian dishes in the evening. Even though we didn't try any of the food, the menu itself was enough to whet our appetite: 'best every curry' for £11, Singapore noodles for £9 and spicy salmon for £11 (to name just a few). Note that the hotel also has a set menu with European dishes at ?26 for three courses.

    To know

Located across from a theatre, the Clarion offers an 'early bird' menu so that guests can have a bite to eat before taking in a show. Like most of its competitors, the hotel also offers meeting rooms, no fewer than ten in fact.

The Best Western Academy Plaza is a safe bet in a good location to visit the town and have a good night's sleep. Although its style is resolutely modern, with facilities to match, there is unfortunately hardly any natural light in the various spaces, which are consequently rather yellowish.

The Davenport hotel is housed in a former church which dates back to 1863 and enjoys a central location not far from Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green park. Needless to say, its façade is unique, and the fine interior decor is impeccable as the hotel was renovated at the end of 2008. Basically, this is a good place to stay for those who like to keep it simple!

The Ripley Court is not a particularly notable hotel, except for the fact that it is set back from O'Connell street and therefore ideally located to go and see matches at Croke Park or a concert at the O2 Arena. Moreover, its practical guest rooms are not too small and safety is one of the hotel's main assets!

The Trinity Capital, bang in the city centre and opposite Trinity College, has a few surprises hidden up its sleeve. You can forget about any ideas of elegance and refined style; here, the decor is exuberant, elaborate, out of the ordinary, and full of contrasts. Although the communal spaces are full of curiosities, the rooms are quite the opposite!

The beautiful 5-star Dylan Hotel was not built in honour of the famous rock star. No, the Dylan simply chose to take up residence in the street of the same name. Now a small hotel with 44 guest rooms, the Dylan was first a hospital, then a hotel, before becoming the Dylan Hotel. It has been welcoming guests into its entirely unique, modern and elegant interior since 2007. Far from being a chain hotel, the Dylan has a bar, restaurant and lounge, but unfortunately no well-being centre.
