In a residential neighbourhood of Dublin, the Mount Herbert has been run by the same family for the past 50 years and is a wonderfully relaxing place. The level of comfort is apparent and the interior decorating was done with great care.

    Location 5.0 /10

The hotel is located in Dublin 4, halfway between Ballsbridge and Sandymount, not far from the legendary stadium (renamed 'Aviva') and the suburban train station. Taxis can be found just in front of the establishment as well. To reach the city centre, allow 20-25 minutes on foot, 15 minutes by bus, and 5 minutes by train. The international airport is 40 minutes away by taxi (9 mi).

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The 168 guest rooms come as 153 rather small 'standard' rooms, 9 'executive' rooms (top floor), 4 'Executive' suites, and 2 normal suites. In the best of cases, they afford a view of the small garden or the street, and at worst they look out onto other windows. Due to the architectural style, with buildings erected right next to each other, the likelihood of looking out onto another window is high. Whatever the type of room, they all share a good level of comfort and tasteful interior design. The larger windows are double-glazed. The rooms include a small plasma screen TV (12-15 channels), a tea and coffee tray, a phone, a safe, and an ironing board and an iron. The white-tiled bathrooms are small and clean and equipped with a bathtub, a soap dispenser with various welcome toiletries, and a big mirror.

    Overview 7.20 /10

The Mount Herbert opened in 1950 and is a family-run establishment that was nicely renovated in 2008. The facade of the building groups together several different houses, some built of brick and others painted over. The oldest one dates back to 1860. From the outside, it is impossible to guess the number of rooms or wings the hotel has, as it has grown over the years, with adjoining houses being bought and extensions added on. The first sight that offers itself to arriving guests is the reception area with its finely decorated and moulded Victorian ceiling. To the side there is a sitting area that occupies a large rectangular room boasting stylish interior decorating that is both modern and simple. Red drapes create a stark contrast with the impeccably white walls. The property has a small lawn garden, where guests can eat around nice wooden tables when the weather permits. There is also a small business centre.

    Food and drink 6.95 /10

The hotel includes one restaurant and a bar. On both sides of the restaurant room there are tables where the breakfast buffet is laid out (Irish or continental). Breakfast is served from 7:00am till 10:00am and includes fruit, cereal, yogurts, juice (3 kinds), hot dishes such as pudding, mushrooms, etc. The restaurant is divided into 2 sections. In one of the rooms, the tables are aligned in a single row that covers the entire length of the room. In the other, the openings onto the garden let floods of light in. Every night, a typically Irish dish is added to the menu, which is more international and copious than the breakfast buffet. A meal costs between £11 and £21. The wine list has some nice selections on offer, which guests may enjoy while reclined in brown or black leather seats in the big hotel bar. The bar also serves sandwiches for lunch.

    To know

There is a charge for Wifi access. There is a (free) car park with 100 places. The hotel also provides a computer so that you can find out what's going on in town, as well as a conference room.

    Accommodation tip :
Ask for a room with a garden view, they're the same price and nicer!

The Davenport hotel is housed in a former church which dates back to 1863 and enjoys a central location not far from Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green park. Needless to say, its façade is unique, and the fine interior decor is impeccable as the hotel was renovated at the end of 2008. Basically, this is a good place to stay for those who like to keep it simple!

The beautiful 5-star Dylan Hotel was not built in honour of the famous rock star. No, the Dylan simply chose to take up residence in the street of the same name. Now a small hotel with 44 guest rooms, the Dylan was first a hospital, then a hotel, before becoming the Dylan Hotel. It has been welcoming guests into its entirely unique, modern and elegant interior since 2007. Far from being a chain hotel, the Dylan has a bar, restaurant and lounge, but unfortunately no well-being centre.

Apart from the massage rooms, sauna and hammam, the hotel also has a lovely large swimming pool, which is quite rare for the Irish capital. Neither too big nor too small, the Clarion Hotel enjoys a privileged location at the heart of the city centre, on the banks of the River Liffey.
