It has to be said that Michael Collins' favourite hotel is now somewhat lacking in character. A basic hotel, it is clean and functional, but with its three separate wings it is quite a labyrinth!

    Location 7.18 /10

The Belvedere Hotel lies opposite the castle, next to the James Joyce Centre and not far from the Writers Museum. The road on which the Belvedere is located joins the top of O'Connell Street, Dublin's answer to Bond Street, with the River Liffey and the city's shopping areas just a few minutes' walk away. Dublin International Airport is just 7 and a half mi away.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

The hotel has a total of 92 rooms, including doubles, triples, family rooms (one double bed and two twin beds) and quadruple rooms, but it is worth remembering that double-glazing has only been fitted on the ground floor. The 38 rooms in the older part of the hotel have all been renovated and those in the Parnell and Rutland parts of the hotel are expected to follow soon. The rooms, although all done out in different colours, are rather dark and simply furnished with light wooden furniture, a television broadcasting only 9 channels (with a plasma screen in the rooms in the older part of the hotel), a wardrobe (without a door), tea and coffee-making facilities, a safe (an electronic one in some of the rooms) and a telephone. The tiled bathrooms are pleasantly spacious, though. All have a bathtub, as well as a Dove soap dispenser, a large mirror and a hair-dryer.

    Overview 7.45 /10

Renovated in 2003, the Belvedere consists of three Georgian houses both overlooking a residential courtyard and the corner of two streets. It's a shame that the main entrance to the hotel does not have the same distinctive style. Furthermore, this is the only grey building in the street, having, unfortunately, been painted this colour to cover the bricks which were once visible. Two of the hotel's three wings were built 7 and 10 years ago and two lifts serve the hotel's two main wings. The Georgian-style detail has now all but disappeared, though the large, traditional staircase still stands. Wi-Fi is free in the hotel's communal areas, although use of the computer in the lobby incurs an additional charge.

    Food and drink 2.20 /10

Guests can have lunch (from 12:00pm to 2:30pm) and dinner (from 5:30pm to 9:30pm) in the large pub which is also open to the public. The evening menu is a little more elaborate, with steaks, fish and chips and a selection of bruschetta and foccacia available in addition to the sandwiches, light bites, pizzas (takeaway available), salmon, chicken and pasta dishes at lunchtime. There is also a small wine list. The pub is well-ventilated and opens onto the street with large bay windows. Breakfast may be served before the usual times (7:00am to 10:00am or 7:30am to 11:00am on weekends) on request. A large and rather generous buffet including croissants, bacon, eggs cooked in various ways, yoghurts, juices, etc., is served in a large room which is only opened between the specified times, and there is also a machine where guests can help themselves to proper coffee. Breakfast costs around ?9.50.

The Best Western Academy Plaza is a safe bet in a good location to visit the town and have a good night's sleep. Although its style is resolutely modern, with facilities to match, there is unfortunately hardly any natural light in the various spaces, which are consequently rather yellowish.

A former residence of the Saint George family, this eponymous hotel is little more than a perfectly decent guesthouse offering small, but clean and functional guest rooms. It is housed in a beautiful Georgian building, which also houses a Mauritian restaurant, and inside, you can really appreciate the mouldings, high ceilings and staircases which characterise the Georgian style.

Add to this the delicious restaurant and the art gallery, and The Morrison is unquestionably a safe bet in Dublin.

The beautiful 5-star Dylan Hotel was not built in honour of the famous rock star. No, the Dylan simply chose to take up residence in the street of the same name. Now a small hotel with 44 guest rooms, the Dylan was first a hospital, then a hotel, before becoming the Dylan Hotel. It has been welcoming guests into its entirely unique, modern and elegant interior since 2007. Far from being a chain hotel, the Dylan has a bar, restaurant and lounge, but unfortunately no well-being centre.

Apart from the massage rooms, sauna and hammam, the hotel also has a lovely large swimming pool, which is quite rare for the Irish capital. Neither too big nor too small, the Clarion Hotel enjoys a privileged location at the heart of the city centre, on the banks of the River Liffey.
