One thing is for sure, The Gibson sets itself apart from the other hotels in Dublin. The hotel has set up residence in an ultra modern building in the Dublin Port area. A far cry from the traditional small hotels, The Gibson is a perfect example of the city's new-found love for trendy, designer hotels. Despite the relaxation facilities available, it's a shame there is no actual spa, especially as there's no lack of space for one at The Gibson...

    Location 6.0 /10

The hotel is located in the Port area, a stone's throw from the East Link Toll Bridge, with a tram stop just opposite to take guests to the famous O'Connell shopping street in just four stops. For those who prefer to walk there, it only takes about fifteen minutes on foot.

    Accommodation 8.50 /10

The fresh-faced guest rooms, all 252 of them to be exact, come in four categories: Superior, Executive, Junior Suites and Penthouse. While the layout varies from one room to another, the modern decor in green (fabrics) and grey (furniture) remains constant throughout. In terms of the view, guests have the choice of the city or one of the three inner courtyards, with the added bonus of a balcony or terrace. The plants that decorate the bedrooms and the terrace also deserve a special mention. The only thing missing from the amenities is a minibar, as the hotel felt its two bars and 24/7 room service was sufficient. The understated, designer look is mirrored in the bathrooms, most of which are fitted with an Italian-style shower. Bee Kind and Gibson Hotel brand complimentary toiletries are also provided.

    Overview 7.90 /10

The huge glass building of The Gibson is difficult to miss, although you could easily walk past it without realising it is actually The Gibson Hotel thanks to the rather inconspicuous signage. The ground floor is taken up by shops, a cinema and a café, with The Gibson Hotel itself only occupying floors three to six of the building. The hotel is accessible via the lifts, or for those not afraid of heights, the escalators which lead to one of the two bars. The communal areas consist of the large entrance hall, the nine meeting rooms, and the well-being area on the top floor. Although the outside view and the decor are both pleasing, it's a shame that this mini spa doesn't come with massage rooms or a swimming pool (even a small one). Nevertheless, guests can enjoy the steam room, sauna and gym.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

Don't get too hung up on the separation between the bar and restaurant areas, as both in fact serve food. As well as fulfilling its primary function (to quench guests' thirst), the bar offers a real culinary showcase of Asian cuisine between midday and 10:00pm. Prices are around ?16.95 (£14.50) for a curry, ?13.95 (£12) for the pad Thai, ?16.95 (£14.50) for the gulai kambing, and ?8.50 (£7) for the Caesar salad. The restaurant serves breakfast, as well as dinner from 5:30pm to 10:00pm. Classic international dishes such as soup, risotto, tagliatelle, burgers and fish can all be enjoyed in the beautiful, large, and modern dining room.

    To know

The Wi-Fi connection is free throughout the hotel. For the codes, guests can help themselves to the tickets available in the lobby. Unlike most hotels, The Gibson accepts (small) pets.

The Davenport hotel is housed in a former church which dates back to 1863 and enjoys a central location not far from Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green park. Needless to say, its façade is unique, and the fine interior decor is impeccable as the hotel was renovated at the end of 2008. Basically, this is a good place to stay for those who like to keep it simple!

The Ripley Court is not a particularly notable hotel, except for the fact that it is set back from O'Connell street and therefore ideally located to go and see matches at Croke Park or a concert at the O2 Arena. Moreover, its practical guest rooms are not too small and safety is one of the hotel's main assets!

The Jurys Inn Custom House is a fairly modern hotel not far from the centre of Dublin and it has the advantage of being particularly spacious - a rarity in the Irish capital - as well as clean and functional (its recently renovated rooms make a pleasant 'pied à terre').

The beautiful 5-star Dylan Hotel was not built in honour of the famous rock star. No, the Dylan simply chose to take up residence in the street of the same name. Now a small hotel with 44 guest rooms, the Dylan was first a hospital, then a hotel, before becoming the Dylan Hotel. It has been welcoming guests into its entirely unique, modern and elegant interior since 2007. Far from being a chain hotel, the Dylan has a bar, restaurant and lounge, but unfortunately no well-being centre.
