Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Pucic Palace, nestled in the heart of the old town, is Dubrovnik's only 5-star hotel. This charming boutique hotel is concealed inside a stone building, and each of its rooms is named after a famous author or musician. The decor varies from one room to the next: classic parquet floors, use of wood, warm colours, etc. Unfortunately, you won't be able to admire the sea from your guest room, as none of them look out onto Dubrovnik bay... We recommend you visit the wine bar, where you can sample a wide selection of international wines and learn more about local specialties. Local specialties are also on offer at the restaurant, along with many fish dishes.

    Location 1.0 /10

The Pucic Palace hotel is protected by the fortification walls of Dubrovnik's old town. Expect around a 25-minute drive to get to the airport (approximately 12 mi away).

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

Each one of this establishment's 19 guest rooms is unique. You will have the choice between several categories: deluxe, executive, standard and junior suite. Instead of having a number, the rooms are named after a writer or a famous composer. Features common to the majority, though, include parquet flooring, red and brown carpets and ancient deckchairs, and classic paintings and photos adorn the walls. The wooden desk, the gilded lamps that provide dimmed lighting and the curtains with their warm colours make for a cosy atmosphere. When we visited the establishment during October 2010, the rooms were set to be fitted with plasma-screen TVs in the winter. In some of the rooms, the ceiling boasts visible beams. The bathrooms also vary from one room to the next: some include a bathtub and separate shower, whereas others have shower baths. The silver and gold soap holders and taps are rather quaint, and the marble washbasins blend in nicely with the matching-coloured tiles. The bathroom also includes a make-up mirror and a hair-dryer, as well as hospitality products by the Bulgari brand, and some slippers.

    Overview 7.95 /10

At number 1, Puca street, in a light-coloured stone building, the Pucic Palace is a charming establishment that opened in 2002. The small entrance hall is furnished only with a wooden reception table, a decorative blue cupboard, colourful flower arrangements and a yellow velvet armchair. The white marble floor marks a stark contrast with the ceiling, which boasts the coats of arms of several families. Next to the restaurant, there is a window display presenting various items available to buy at the reception desk, which include jewellery, souvenirs and bottles of wine. The Pucic Palace has a wonderfully welcoming wine cellar, decorated with leather armchairs, a wooden counter and dimmed lighting. The bottles stand in rows on wooden shelves that cover the entire length of the wall. The wine list offers a wide selection of international wines to sample: from France to Austria and from Chile to Croatia. A glass of one of these can cost anything between £5 and £22. We strongly recommend the Dingac, a dry red wine, and the Matusko Posip, a dry white wine. You can even visit the vineyards if you so wish.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The restaurant of the Pucic Palace occupies a small room with only 10 tables. Water paint portraits adorn the walls, and the ceiling's beams feature the coats of arms of various families. Designer chandeliers add a touch of originality to this room clad in white. The menu offers mainly fish and seafood, including calamari and lobster, among other things, and if you'd like to try a bit of everything, we recommend you share a Dubrovnik Plate. This consists of local specialties such as ham, cheese and anchovies, hot starters, such as the seafood risotto, grilled calamari, and, as a main course, grilled fish and shrimps, followed by a flan for dessert. It should cost you about £90. In the evening, you can enjoy your meal on the terrace. If enjoy immersing yourself in the local ambiance, we recommend the Sunday breakfast at the hotel, since it's the only morning the terrace is open. Breakfast is served à la carte, and don't forget to try the orange juice, a true delight!

    To know

The historical centre of Dubrovnik only has 2 hotels: the Pucic Palace and the Stari Grad, a humble 3-star establishment. The Pucic Palace has its own private section on Bange Beach, a 5-minute walk away, where deckchairs and towels are provided for guests.

The 5-star Bellevue overlooks Dubrovnik Bay, in a position from which it rightfully took its name. It belongs to the Adriatic Luxury Services chain and comes with a complete set of spa facilities, a swimming pool, a sauna and a gym. On top of this, it has a private beach with very fine sand and rather pleasant crystal-clear water, which is definitely worth a mention because it is not often the case in this part of the world. Deckchairs are also available for hotel guests. If you are interested in organising an outing or need help booking tickets to a show, you can do so directly through the hotel, which offers its own services.
