    Location 6.71 /10

The apartments are well situated at the bottom of Royal Mile. Close enough to get around easily, but not so close that you can't step out of your front door without being swept up by a herd of tourists. The residential location is quiet but provides a perfect base from which to explore the city. Also, unlike many Edinburgh hotels, the Holyrood apartments have onsite parking, which comes either complementary or at a small charge depending on your package type. Edinburgh's Waverly Station is a ten-minute walk away, and direct airport buses depart regularly from the station, and take around 25 minutes.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

Apartments are sleek and modern, if basic, and equipped with all modern amenities including flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docks and high-speed internet. Each two-bed apartment has one bathroom and one shower room, and the kitchens are bright and modern with everything you could need to prepare a meal. Guests can choose between double/twin or twin/twin combinations, and the bedrooms tend to be spacious and sunny, with a simple and modern decor which isn't particularly remarkable.

    Overview 7.45 /10

Holyrood ApartHOTEL consists of 46 apartments, of which most are two bed apartments (with an additional sofa bed), with nine studios and two penthouse apartments. Three-bed apartments are available for larger groups. Guests can also make use of the hotel's parking lot, and a small gym located in the basement, which has several stations.

    Food and drink

There is no restaurant at Holyrood ApartHOTEL, but guests are welcomed with a continental breakfast hamper, tea and coffee-making facilities and fresh milk in the fridge on arrival.

    To know

Holyrood ApartHOTEL is one of a group of four hotels owned by The Edinburgh Collection including Channings, The Howard and The Old Waverly. The group was founded in 1990, and quickly established itself as one of Edinburgh's leading luxury hotel groups. All four hotels differ in style and have their own unique character, and Holyrood ApartHotel is the most practical of the four, offering a simple but well-kept pied-à-terre at the heart of the city.

The Old Waverly is the largest of the Edinburgh Collection's hotels, and also the most central. Boasting many cheap offers throughout the year, the hotel is a popular stopover for larger groups and families, and a good choice for those who have little time to spare and want to be right in the centre of the action! Small, uniform rooms and uninspired decoration means the hotel lacks in personality, which is a shame for a historically listed building, but with a large refurbishment in the pipeline, things can only get better.

The Glasshouse is not short of praise and awards. Only a hint of the hotel's contemporary sleek lines and high windows are visible from behind the façade of the 150 year old Lady Glenorchy Church. One of a handful of 5 star residencies in Edinburgh, The Glasshouse feels particularly clean, modern and safe. A lovely uncluttered space away from home, practical but not particularly charming. Greeted by William, the hotel's friendly doorman who will readily give advice for anything you need to know about the city.

Besides the excellent location, beautiful rooms and stunning building, the best thing about The Balmoral is its team of friendly and dedicated staff, who effortlessly give the impression that anything is possible. The hotel was first opened 15 October 1902, but didn't become The Balmoral until 1991. Expect Victorian splendor and classic elegance with a modern twist - the hotel completed a £7 million refurbishment program in March 2004, and the results are still fresh. The Balmoral is home to Edinburgh's only Michelin-starred hotel restaurant, but there are three more eateries to choose from if formal dining's not your cup of tea! Relax in the spa, lunch at Hadrian's Brasserie, or enjoy a champagne tea at the stunning Bollinger Bar. If you have time after all that, pop outside and explore Edinburgh's numerous attractions, which seem to be conveniently clustered right at The Balmoral's doorstep.

Visiting Edinburgh's Hotel du Vin you would never guess that the hotel is in fact the latest addition to a nation-wide family of 15 luxury boutique hotels. A chain yes, but the hotel itself feels like a one-off Scottish phenomenon, complete with a scattering of tartan, a whiskey lounge and a cosy cigar bothy to snuggle up in on a cold winter night. Modest and stylish, Hotel du Vin has plenty of reason to blow its own horn: 47 beautifully decorated rooms and suites (with bathrooms to die for) sitting on a goldmine of history in one of Edinburgh's trendiest areas, it would be futile to cover up the fact that this little gem was one of our favourites. With a large emphasis on dining and drinking, the hotel has a labyrinth of nooks and crannies, mezzanines and wine cellars to relax in. The restaurant itself is large, open plan and delightfully provincial. Popular amongst locals and foodies, and boasting a staggering wine list to navigate your way around, the restaurant is at the heart of the hotel.

As should be expected from one of the world's forefront fashion designers, Hotel Missoni is an extremely stylish, light, fresh address in the heart of Edinburgh's Medieval Old Town. The glamourous Italian fashion label is renowned for its use of colour, stripes and intricately woven fabrics, and the hotel doesn't disappoint! Every aspect of the hotel screams style, with a flamboyant palette and stunning textiles throughout. Avoiding the over-employed temptation to clad everything in tartan, Missoni nevertheless sports a subtly Scottish charm (we loved the Missoni-print kilts worn by the doormen?). Incredibly confident, Missoni is quite possibly the only hotel in the world that could get away with a multi-coloured theme, silver quilted headboards, enormous circular chill pads and shaggy rugs? and still make it look cool. The hotel feels in many ways like the set for a fashion editorial, and even the brochure reads like a mood-board, stating matter-of-factly: ?Missoni. For Scotland. Bold. Forthright. Dramatic', which sums up the Missoni experience perfectly.

A large, classically elegant establishment sitting on a hot address, The George has had a good couple of centuries experience in the hotel industry, and it shows! Filling up five Georgian town houses, the hotel is a successful mix of original features and contemporary style. Perched at the higher end of the four-star spectrum, The George was bought by luxury hotel brand Principle Hayley a few years back, which funded a £20 million refurbishment of the property.

Located on one of Edinburgh's chic Georgian streets, The Howard is a discreet hotel whose five stars are well-deserved! If modest on the outside, the small but perfectly formed boutique hotel shows its true colours on the other side of the threshold. Elegant marble columns and gold gilded mirrors stand out against a classically Scottish décor. Boasting beautiful period features, cosy common spaces and an optional personal butler service, The Howard is the only five star establishment of its type in Edinburgh.

Perched on the end of a world heritage site at the heart of Edinburgh's beautiful New Town, One Royal Circus is sitting on an extremely prestigious address. Not that you'd know, there are no flags or plaques to mark the spot. Ring the doorbell to be greeted like an old friend, and enter the beautiful high-ceilinged entrance hall, where you'll be instantly blown away by the elegance of this boutique guesthouse. The property is exceptionally well-decorated, with stylish contemporary furniture sitting alongside original Georgian features. It's impossible not to feel chuffed when you're told recurrently to make yourself at home, knowing that most of us can only dream of a home half as beautiful! The modesty of this inner-city pied-à-terre makes it even more attractive. Guests are given a tour of the property on arrival, handed over a front door key, and left to their own devices. Staff mobile numbers are pinned on a clipboard in the kitchen, should you need further assistance.

A winding road leads you from the suburbs of Edinburgh, through the beautifully kept fields and pasture lands of the ancient owner's manor house, where the two house cows live in luxury.

The Caledonian Hilton, soon to be re-branded a five star Waldorf hotel, is one of Edinburgh's iconic architectural masterpieces. Ideally located on the threshold between Edinburgh's New Town and the Old Town, The Caledonian sits the base of the infamous castle, looking out over Princes Gardens. The best thing about this hotel is its spaciousness ? a luxury in a historical town, and one that can't be changed thanks to the building's listed status. An old railway hotel, The Caley (as the hotel is affectionately known in Edinburgh) pairs period features with a modern, sophisticated decor. The hotel already has a reputation for excellence, so it's no surprise that it's going after its well-earned fifth star.

The service is friendly and efficient and the staff here will go out of their way to make every guest feel special. An ideal hotel for couples looking for a romantic getaway with a twist of originality.

A melting pot of renaissance chic with a contemporary edge, The Rutland lends itself to a younger crowd. The hotel also boasts a swanky nightclub, The One Below, which is predictably located below the hotel... guests staying at The Rutland are automatically put on the guest list, which is quite a privilege on a busy Saturday night!
