    Location 9.18 /10

Inside the fisherman's borgo (village) in Gallipoli. Gallipoli is to Puglia what Syracuse is to Sicily: a magnificent fortified city, without the Greek ruins. Lecce is 30 minutes away and Otranto 45. The fine sandy beaches on each side of the new town are superb. The closest airport is Brindisi, 1 hour away, with Bari 2 hours away.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The 21 guest rooms are all fairly different: you hardly dare lean on the walls of this old palace, classed as an Italian Historical Monument, as you known how sensitive they are when it comes to touching even a centimetre of heritage. The decoration, however, is identical: essentially minimalistic with lots of white and the few off splashes of colour. In the so-called Standard rooms, which are not huge (far from it), the combination of the small size and the Zen decor gives the impression that the quality is far from 4-star. A bathroom with a shower (not big either), a double bed, two bedside tables and a few lamps: just good enough to sleep in but nothing more. You have to see the Superior duplex rooms to justify the hotel's 4 stars, with the bed and bathroom on the upper level and a sofa bed on the lower one (for 2 if need be). The so-called Luxury rooms generally have a terrace (make sure to ask for one when you book as there are one or two without) and are much larger. The 'Luna' room was our favourite. The 'Airone' room is a romantic haven for couples of all ages.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Admittedly it's a palace, but you can't help thinking of a Moroccan riad. The small courtyards, the split levels, the patios, the terraces that overlook the sea... Breakfast is served on the veranda on the top floor, which is open in summer and overlooks the rooftops of the old town and the nearby sea. There is also a hot tub with a view to top it off. You can buy pieces of local craftwork at the shop here, and there is also a library and a lounge. The entire hotel is air-conditioned with Wi-Fi available throughout, although it has difficulty passing through the age-old walls.

    Beach

Note that the hotel has an arrangement with a private beach in the south of the town (where the most beautiful ones are found).

    To know

Arriving by car at the entrance to the Relais Corte Palmieri is not an option: the little streets of this fortified village were built for mules. They are narrow and intersect at right angles to provide protection from the wind in winter. You therefore have to leave your car at the port car park (free) just next to it. A driver will come to collect your luggage in a superb little Piaggio Ape. Just one hundred metres further and you've arrived. A little square lined with orange trees, a pretty glass door and then a table with a glass of prosecco and some specialities to nibble on waiting for you: here hospitality is a time-honoured tradition.
