Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Princess Sun used to be over-run by Anglo-Saxon and Italian tourists, but, mid-April 2009, it became the island's first Lookéa hotel. It is now 100% French-speaking, and has had to undergo a fair amount of renovation work before being unveiled to its new clients. It has great facilities and is sure to win over guests young and old, families and couples.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Lookéa is on the east coast of the island, close to the little village of Kiotari, 34 mi from the city of Rhodes and 40 mi from the international airport. Access to the airport is made via the beautiful main road along the coast, south of the capital city. Kiotari is also famed for its coastline and pretty beach... On your way there, you will pass through the charming village of Lindos and its famous acropolis, just 15 minutes from the Lookéa. Perched on a small hill, the hotel enjoys 360° views over the pine covered hillsides all around and the transparent sea down below.

    Accommodation 7.10 /10

The hotel has a mix of 147 Standard and Superior rooms affording pleasant views of the swimming pool and the sea, or of the hundreds of pine trees standing guard on the surrounding hills. All of the rooms have individual air conditioning (from 15th June to 30th September), satellite television, a refrigerator, a telephone, a balcony, a safe (available to hire), and a small bathroom with a bathtub, a wash basin, and a hair dryer. The rooms have been renovated but unfortunately have not yet been given the benefit of a full makeover. They are simply furnished in shades of beige and pale blue, and the Superior rooms also have a sofa bed. The white walls are simply 'decorated' with a single painting of a Greek landscape.

    Overview 6.72 /10

The Lookéa was completely renovated when it was taken over and consists of several modern 2 or 3 storey buildings, all interconnected by corridors. Despite this, it isn't necessarily easy to find the swimming pool if you don't already know the way! Ramps have been installed for elderly guests and those with reduced mobility. The view of the sea from the pool is particularly pleasant, but if you look too far over the edge you'll see the far less attractive sight of the hotels down below! Most of the hotel's outdoor facilities are brand new, with a big theatre for shows in the evening, a nightclub, beach volleyball courts, archery ranges, and petanque pitches. According to the management, there is still enough space for new facilities, with whisperings that a tennis court or relaxation area might soon be opened here. The structures, the rather charmless lobby, and the swimming pool, however, are all in their original state.

    Food and drink 6.66 /10

All the meals are served as a buffet inside the large dining room or adjoining terrace of the 'Sunset' restaurant. The dishes on offer are pretty classic, comprised mainly of international and Greek cuisine, even though the Lookéa boasts the same chef as the neighbouring 5-star Rodos Princess Beach hotel. Lunch is served at the main restaurant or at the beach bar, which is open from 11:00am until 5:00pm and offers a rather unvaried selection of snacks including sandwiches, pizzas, salads and seasonal fruits. Cocktails can be enjoyed at the hotel's three bars: the lobby bar, the 'Sunrise' bar next to the pool, or the beach bar. Remember that the all-inclusive option is only valid until 11:00pm.

    Beach 6.50 /10

The Lookéa's beach, which is located in a beautiful cove and looks out onto a transparent sea, would be perfect if it were not covered in deckchairs and parasols! It should be noted that the Lookéa shares this little corner of paradise with the neighbouring Rodos Princess Beach hotel. Guests staying at the Lookéa are a short walk from the beach (about half a mile), but if you don't fancy the exercise you can drive down in your hire car or take the free shuttle that runs from the hotel every half hour between 10:00am and 10:00pm. You can therefore make the most of the spot and its bar. Just like the other beaches on the east coast, this one has crystal clear water and sand of eroded rock.

    To know

The lucky owners of the Princess Sun also own the hotel next door, the Rodos Princess Beach, and both hotels share the public beach located down below, as well as the chef of the two main restaurants! That, though, is where the collaboration ends. The Princess Sun offers an all-inclusive package deal which is valid until 11:00pm. Ten organisers work all day long to offer a new activity every half hour, tournaments and nightly shows.
