The Finca Salamanca is one of our favourite hotels in Tenerife. This delightful 19th-century rural estate located on the hillside above the village of Gimar stands in the midst of an avocado plantation - a very privileged and charming place indeed. It is halfway between the beach and the slopes of the Teide and, therefore, it is ideally located if you enjoy hiking. After several hours of walking, you will love stretching out on the beach, without having to think about driving. The estate comprises 20 rooms only, which gives it a kind of confidential atmosphere, far from the tiring hustle and bustle found in tourist areas.

    Location 3.0 /10

The Finca Salamanca is located on the heights of Puerto Guimar, on the eastern coast of Tenerife, and at the entrance of the small village of Guimar, not far from some peculiar pyramids. Allow 45 minutes to reach the hotel from Tenerife Sur airport, located 22 mi away. The hotel stands 40 mi away from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital city.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The very neat rooms, with their old-style decor complete with wooden furniture, stone walls and tiled floors, each have a furnished terrace (deckchair, table and chairs) with a view of the mountains. The standard rooms have an area of 22m and are equipped with a bathroom (a bathtub with a flexible shower head, non-separate toilets and hospitality products), a direct international telephone line with fax and Internet outlets, satellite television (20 channels), a mini bar, a fan, an electric heater, a key-operated safe (1.50 a day), and the windows are fitted with mosquito nets. The rooms can accommodate 2 adults and 1 child. The junior suites, each with an area of 35m, can accommodate up to 3 adults.

    Overview 8.45 /10

Open since 1998, the Finca Salamanca is an old 19th-century farmhouse that houses a total of 20 guest rooms (8 standard rooms, 4 superior rooms, 4 junior suites, and 4 bungalows). It is nestled in the midst of a 12-acre plantation where avocado and mango are cultivated, amongst other things. A stroll around this beautiful tropical garden will disclose many a surprise to you: a cowshed, some horse stables, a trough, a boules pitch, a well, and even a tennis court. In the middle of the garden, you will find a small 1.47m-deep heated pool, square in shape, and surrounded by deckchairs, parasols, two showers; and a toilet. The pool bar serves snacks in the daytime and towels are provided free of charge at the reception.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The restaurant serves a type of cuisine typical of the Canary Islands, showing some great variety in the dishes. The menu generally consists of 3 different starters, 3 main courses, and 3 desserts. A local dish called 'carne fiesta', fish, chicken with mushrooms, and grilled cherne (a type of sole typical of the Canary islands) are some of the specialities you will be able to enjoy. An international-style breakfast is served to cater to all tastes. The staff treat their guests with great care, which is a detail worth mentioning on an island where such things aren't always taken into account.
The hotel provides half-board accommodation that consists of a breakfast buffet served from 8:00am to 10:00am and la carte dinner from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. Twice a week (every Tuesday and Friday) it organizes a Canarian buffet. Having won multiple awards for its menu, the restaurant is prettily arranged in the old cigar drying shed, in a cosy atmosphere that brings to mind traditional taverns: subdued lighting, wood beams on the ceiling; and lantern lights. The restaurant is open to non-resident guests from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and near the car park, an area has been designated for barbecues.

    Beach

The closest beach is in Puerto de Guimar, 2.5 mi from the Finca Salamanca, a 5 minute drive away. Playa del Cabezo is a black sand beach, coarse enough to remind you of gravel. Some sea walls protect the beach from the waves, but these and the currents are still very strong. You will have to remain careful, as there aren't any lifeguards supervising the beach. There aren't any amenities either, except for toilets. The absence of entertainment and the presence of very few tourists do guarantee great tranquillity however.

    To know

The hotel has a large park, a section of which is dedicated to barbecues. Hotel guests may use it without even having to notify the owners, which is a great advantage. Having dinner out in the open, under this island's beautiful sky is a real privilege. You won't feel as if you were staying in an ordinary hotel and you will be able to enjoy all these advantages, without the impersonal side of it. Moreover, you will find a spacious lounge on the first floor, furnished with historic pieces dating from the 19th century. Again, you will feel as if you were staying with some friends. We highly recommend you sit and watch the sunset from here - the view really is unique.

Since the Finca Salamanca hotel is quite isolated, hiring a car turns out to be inevitable. Bicycles are also available (for free) if you fancy taking a ride around the Finca. Along the flowery garden paths you can randomly admire one of the oldest ficus in the world, traditional farming tools, a well, a horse cart, and even a boules pitch hidden in the midst of the greenery.

    Accommodation tip:

Located a little out of the way on the estate, the wooden bungalows (each one named after a Canary island) are an invitation to relaxation with their wooden deckchairs laid out on large terraces.
