    Location 3.0 /10

Guests board at the end of a long quay that starts at Bai Tai beach, a few minutes from where the junks are docked.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The Emeraude has 37 cabins, including 3 very pleasant suites (the upstairs ones are particularly nice). These are decorated in the colonial style with parquet floors, bamboo canes on the walls, a fan, a lamp and copper taps. There is even air-conditioning to help keep you cool at night. The great charm of the place, combined with the friendly atmosphere, make for the perfect romantic cruise. The rooms are small and there is not much space left when the double bed or two single beds are taken into account. The bathrooms consist of a washbasin in the bedroom and a toilet and floor-level shower in a separate little cabin. A complimentary cake and bottle of water are provided as a welcome gift. Recliners are set out in front of each room so you can make the most of the sea air from daybreak and enjoy the beautiful sunset in complete privacy.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Emeraude is an impressive boat that harks back to the colonial era. It has a restaurant inside but, of course, you will be spending most of your time on the upper deck, which has been comfortably equipped and includes private little nooks. Here you'll find a large bar with a friendly atmosphere, and many activities are on offer, from film screenings to Vietnamese cookery classes. Above this partially covered deck is a terrace, which is perfect for topping up your tan before the sun gets too strong. Guests can also make use of the diving gear available to explore the sea bed in the bay and maybe even find an oyster pearl or jewels of another kind.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The restaurant is on the ground floor and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as a buffet, combining international and Asian cuisine. The dishes are delicate, varied and copious, and we particularly enjoyed the salads and seafood. The dining room is decorated in the same typical style as the rest of the boat, with wooden furnishings, leather benches, parquet floors, copper period lamps, etc. The tables to the front of the boat are nicer because they are set slightly apart. A bar in the same room serves up all kinds of alcoholic drinks, including whisky for the true sailors! To tell the truth, though, it is more pleasant to have a drink up on the deck, leaning against the bar or sat in one of the many wicker armchairs looking out to sea. Vietnamese cookery demonstrations are also organised in front of this bar.

    To know

The Emeraude was part of a fleet belonging to the Roque family, who left France in 1858. After more than 50 years of hard work and research the family, who owned a wood company, built the Emeraude, Perle, Saphir, Ruphit, Rubis and Onyx boats to take passengers on cruises on the navigable waterways of Indochina and Halong bay. The Emeraude described here is a replica of the original boat!

If you like a good backrub, make the most of the onboard massage and beauty treatments offered by qualified professionals at affordable prices, either in a booth or on deck - your choice!
