Hotel Novotel Ha Long Bay Hotel 4 star
Hà Long Baie d'Along, Vietnam
Amy Adejokun Section editor

This latest 'small' addition to Halong opened in October 2008. A Novotel brand hotel, it is elegant and comfortable, and certainly one of the best establishments in town. There is little room for complaint; everything is tasteful and refined, from the restaurant to the rooms and the swimming-pool. However, we can't say that we're not looking forward to a spa or a fitness centre opening here, and why not a bit of entertainment too.

    Location 3.0 /10

It is a short walk from the boat terminal where you can catch a junk boat for an exploratory excursion of Halong Bay. The drive to Hanoi is at least 3 hours.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

There are 214 rooms, divided into four categories: 70 standard rooms, 118 superior rooms, 24 executive rooms and 2 suites. The only difference between the standard and superior rooms is the view. The superior rooms afford a splendid view of Halong Bay! As far as the interior is concerned, designer is the keyword and it is reflected in every detail, from the parquet flooring to the white walls. The furniture is of very dark wood, the lighting is original, and there are flat-screen televisions and a mini-bar. There is also a kettle so that you can brew a quick cuppa and enjoy it in the armchair at the table in front of the window and admire the view (sheltered from the wind!). When the weather is nice though, you can enjoy your tea on the balcony! As for the bathroom, it opens onto the room thanks to a bay window which lets plenty of light in, and it is very pleasant, with a big shower and a separate toilet. All the bathrooms are well-equipped, with colourful and nicely designed hospitality products, a hair-dryer, a shaving kit, a toothbrush, slippers, and dressing-gowns. Everything is here so that you can travel as light as possible. The same goes for the facilities. To mention but a few, there is air-conditioning, a safe, a phone and all the other mod-cons.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel occupies a large building and stands out among the surrounding tower block hotels for its clean and new aspect. Gleaming white, built over 12-floors, you just need to walk in to understand that this is a designer hotel that lives up to European standards for 4-star establishments. Connoisseurs will recognise the style typical of the Accor brand. The first thing to catch the eye (and the wallet) is a boutique that sells all sorts of colourful objects. However, don't get sidetracked, proceed into the superb entrance hall: to the right there is a bar, and to the left a restaurant opens onto a terrace with a large round swimming-pool. In the centre, there is a circular lounge lit by red tubes that seem to hang from the skies, inciting guests to lay back and relax while someone fetches the key to their room. Everything is stylish, colourful and luminous, and the staff are friendly and attentive to your needs. It is definitely difficult to resist the charm and style of spending a comfortable night here, rather than camping it out on the bay, despite the latter being more authentic.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The restaurant is surrounded by bay windows with wooden shutters that let in sunlight and afford a view of some parts of Halong Bay. It is very pleasant and spacious, despite the presence of wooden screens to provide some of the tables with a little privacy. The furniture is modern, the floor is made of marble and wood, there are numerous light fittings, and an Asian touch reminds you where you are. The Square, as this is the name of the main restaurant, is highly recommended. As for the cuisine, almost all the cooking is carried out in front of you. There is a buffet for breakfast and dinner that offers many typical and tasty dishes cooked right in front of you, and for which you can specify how much or little it is cooked, although we do advise you to put your faith in the cooks' talents. For lunch, there is the a la carte option, with a menu that offers a choice of sandwiches, pizzas, salads and a few traditional dishes, such as steaks and pork ribs. All prices are in dollars. For drinks or a night cap, you can lay back in one of the super comfortable sofas of the reception bar. It's also decorated with style, and it offers a friendly and cosy atmosphere, with its great colourful cushions. There are corners where you can sit for private conversations, and places where a group of friends can sit around. The only snag is that the level of comfort is such that you always run the risk of nodding off in the middle of the conversation. However, those who prefer to hang around the bar will find that the high stools are the perfect place to sit and meet other guests, and share your adventures of the day.
