Despite its belonging to the Barceló group since 2007, this hotel is not quite up to scratch in comparison with the Spanish chain's other 4 star hotels, particularly as some of its facilities are rather antiquated and the cuisine isn't what it could be. It is also surrounded by vegetation so you may unexpectedly come across some (albeit harmless) insects, but a stroll through the gardens leading down to the superb beach is a real treat, with the aromas of jasmine and orange blossom taking you back to the days of the Thousand and One Nights.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel stands in one of the tourist parts of Hammamet, a quiet area peppered with hotels and various shopping streets, home to shops selling traditional Tunisian crafts, fresh markets, bars, restaurants, etc. - all within walking distance of the hotel. It is located 1,9 mi from the centre of the town's medina and even has its own private beach, directly linked to the hotel grounds.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

Although some of the guest rooms are more modern than others, all of the 336 rooms at the Barceló Hammamet feature decor which will really make you feel you are on holiday, with the arabesque style headboard and table, the colourful cushions, the lights and the rugs all helping to set the scene. The 3 suites and 20 mini-suites are along the same lines but feature more modern decor and additional decorative touches, such as rose petals, often arranged to create a pattern on the bed or in the bathtub, as a welcome gesture. The hotel also boasts four villas, 15 maisonettes and 27 apartments. All guest rooms are located on the first or second floors, which are accessed via the stairs only as there is no lift. Most of the rooms overlook the gardens. It is a very pleasant view but can, nevertheless, come back to haunt you should you forget to close the patio doors, letting the mosquitoes and various other insects in. The bathrooms, for their part, are divided in two.

    Overview 7.20 /10

This really is the hotel's weakest point. The building at the centre of the complex, and housing most of the guest rooms, is clearly very old and really could do with some renovations, particularly when it comes to the corridors (with are rather inhospitable), the rooms (including the bathrooms) and the balconies and terraces. Other rooms, such as the lobby and the restaurants, appear to have been renovated fairly recently and feature rather tasteful Arab-inspired decor. Likewise, the furniture chosen for the garden (handy and stylish sofas and tables) and the style employed in the spa centre are worthy of the 4 star Barceló stamp. The hotel boasts three swimming pools (two outdoor and one indoor, the latter incorporating hydromassage taps), two tennis courts, a mini golf course, a gym, a hairdressing salon and a spa centre offering a wide variety of massages and beauty treatments. The latter is a modern and pleasantly-decorated area where lovely fragrances hang in the air, and prices range from around 4,5 pounds for a hammam session and 11 pounds for a 25-minute massage to 55 pounds for a full treatment after which you will leave feeling brand new. The spa itself is open from 9:00am to 7:00pm, and whilst the jacuzzi is free of charge, its opening hours are rather limited (from 11:00am to 12:00pm and from 4:30pm to 5:30pm).

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The menu in the hotel's main restaurant (where meals are served as a buffet) varies depending on the season, though the quality of the food served leaves something to be desired at any time of the year. Its strong point has to be the show cooking demonstrations, which are even provided at breakfast time, when guests can enjoy tasty, freshly prepared crepes. The Viennese pastries served at breakfast, as well as the various fruits available, are worth a special mention. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the fruit juices; and while the industrial stuff is free, there is a charge for the fresh orange juice. Some of the dishes served on the buffet are the same every day (such as soups and salads), whilst various other dishes based on Tunisian, Italian and also more international cuisine alternate from one day to the next. This restaurant is located on the ground floor with excellent views of the main pool, and there is also a terrace for those who would prefer to dine outdoors, weather permitting. The hotel also has a (very stylish and convenient) à la carte restaurant, a barbecue restaurant (the Papagallo), an Arabic cafe and a terrace restaurant overlooking the beach and the gardens. You'll find several bars here too, including one in the lobby featuring Moroccan decor that is very busy at all times of the day, one at the pool, which also serves pizzas and toasted sandwiches, and one on the beach.

    Beach 7.45 /10

You can easily access the private beach at the Barceló Hammamet from your room by simply crossing the lovely lush gardens. In fact, the diversity of the flowers and the aromas you'll find in this mini paradise are a nice prelude to your swim or to lounging under a parasol on your plastic lounger (available at a supplement of around 2 Dinars/day - less than 1 pound -and provided exclusively for hotel guests). Those who feel so inclined can play sports such as beach volleyball and petanque or participate in various other activities arranged by the hotel's entertainment team, whose office is located at the foot of the beach. This is also a very pleasant spot to enjoy a snack, some light refreshments or perhaps even a cocktail in peaceful surroundings.

    To know

The hotel's public relations representative welcomes Spanish guests in their own language in a makeshift office incorporated into the lobby. Here they are given an overview of the hotel, its facilities and its main services. The hotel itself is over 50 years old, and whilst some parts have been renovated, others are still waiting. In the Standard guest rooms, for example, you'll find neither a hair-dryer nor a mini bar, and none of the rooms have access for guests with limited mobility. With the exception of guide dogs, no animals are accepted at the hotel and beach towels are available to borrow in return for a deposit.

Opened in 1995, the Bel Air offers substandard facilities. The reception area and the rooms are great, but the same cannot be said of the infrastructures strewn around a tiny park. This is seen in the deck-chairs tightly arranged around the swimming-pool. If you want a bit of intimacy, you should head for the beach... but you have to be up for the 500 m walk from the hotel!

Built in 1968, the Samira Club benefits from its long history by being built right at the water's edge. You'd be clever to guess the actual age of this establishment, particularly as the reception and the communal areas really look like they were built yesterday! Unfortunately though, the same cannot be said for the guest rooms, where you'll find both the decor and the amenities disappointing. On the plus side, it'll encourage you to get out for the day and maybe try your hand at some of the many activities available onsite!

Although 10 years have gone by, the hotel still offers a very contemporary look thanks to its regular maintenance, as well as a multitude of activities that can be done in its 35 acre park.
