An institution in Hanoi, the Sofitel Métropole welcomes all the celebrities visiting the city. It is a fully equipped hotel, with a lot of charm and impeccable service. However, we did find a few bad points about the place ?

    Location 4.91 /10

The hotel is in the centre of Hanoi, close to the landmarks of Hoan Kiem lake, the opera, the old town and the boutiques. The airport is roughly 40 minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The establishment has 266 rooms, 32 of which are suites, spread across two buildings. On one side you have the Métropole wing, which is an original century old building and on the other you have the Opera wing (137 rooms).
All the rooms have a classy, charming interior: parquet flooring, the Sofitel MyBed that guarantees a restful sleep, a flat-screen television, pretty photos, nice colours, ancient colonial-style furniture and a bathtub in the bathroom. In all rooms there is a wardrobe to keep the dressing-gowns, kimonos, slippers and a safe, free of dust. Air-conditioning, a minibar, a hair-dryer, an alarm clock and toiletry products are also available.
In the ancient part, the 400 sq ft rooms have a feel of the old times and some of the elements of the interior, such as the dark wood fan or the carpets, are reminiscent of the distant colonial days. In the Opera wing, the rooms are only 350 sq ft and are more modern in their colours and furniture.
The bathrooms aren't the same on either side: In the older wing, they are spacious, entirely made of marble, but quite classic, and in the modern wing, they are smaller with the bathtub joints already peeling away; however they are nicely decorated and include a set of scales! In both cases, the toilets are not separate, which is a pity!
There are two types of view: city or garden. The latter are calmer but all the rooms have double-glazing. Regrettably, it is impossible to open the windows and let some fresh air in. As for the balcony, it is a complete disappointment!

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built in 1901, in a pure colonial style, the Métropole is an institution in Hanoi. It was chosen as the official hotel for important visitors, and then as the HQ for journalists and diplomats. In 1992, it was renovated and reopened under the Sofitel brand. Nowadays, its reputation is made and needs to be upheld. As far as the architecture is concerned, it has a standard white façade, green shutters, cast iron embellishments, woodwork and a superb lawn.
All the facilities, from the restaurant to the bar, along with the reception area, the boutiques and the bakery, are very charming with chic interior. In the courtyard, a pleasant swimming pool provides a perfect relaxation area far from all the turmoil, and braver guests can try out the gleaming new fitness centre. State-of-the-art facilities, trainers, physiotherapists, a sauna and a jacuzzi; everything is at hand!

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The hotel includes several places to eat, have a drink, or nibble a snack. Let's start with the most famous of these, the Beaulieu; it serves the best French cuisine in town. In an elegant atmosphere with vintage decor, the gourmet food is aimed to please the most demanding guests. This place actually used to be the favoured place for Sunday brunch and evening entertainment. Its terrace is the most frequented in Hanoi.
The Spices Garden Vietnamese offers a beautiful setting with a view of the garden terrace. The menu consists of modern and traditional Vietnamese cuisine.
As for bars, try the Bamboo bar, where you can enjoy refreshing cocktails and light snacks, served in an old-fashioned atmosphere, with a central pool, rattan armchairs and ceiling fans. As for The Club Bar, it is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink. Be aware that a piano player provides musical accompaniment to your (varied and copious) breakfasts, chocolate buffets and dinners in the hotel.

    To know

As far as the service is concerned, it could hardly be any better, but some residents in Hanoi have told us that it has gone down since the opening of its latest wing... we'll just have to take their word for it!
Apart from the Premium rooms, all the rooms have enough space for an extra bed.
The hotel offers chauffeur-driven tours of the city in a 1953 Citroën. The driver knows everything about the city and its colonial history.
In front of the hotel, you can hire Sofitel rickshaws.
You can also ask for the hotel to arrange a limousine or shuttle ride to and from the airport.
This ancient building includes several special suites, such as that of Charlie Chaplin, the Somerset Maugham, and even a genuine Presidential suite (Graham suite) that has welcomed a number of French premiers.
