Don't be misled by the grand name of the Kosta Mare Palace & Spa: it is a basic, all-inclusive hotel which is well-maintained but certainly not luxurious. Its many facilities raise it to four-star status, but the setting is starkly lacking in character.

    Location 7.0 /10

The Kosta Mare is located in the Anissaras region, some 3 mi from the lively town of Hersonissos and 16 mi from Heraklion airport. A ten-minute walk takes you to the village of Analipsi, one of the rare seaside spots on the north coast where the traditional Cretan way of life can still be observed, thus far unaffected by the tourist trade.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The rooms are spread between the old and new buildings, but they have all been recently renovated. Unfortunately though, rooms in the older building still do not have individual air-conditioning, and whilst there is plenty of decent furniture, the decor itself is minimalist. The bathrooms have either a shower or a bathtub, but the sinks in the older building are hopelessly small. Some of the rooms have terraces overlooking the nearby swimming pool, while others have a sea view. The spacious superior rooms are housed in the newer buildings, and family rooms, which consist of two bedrooms separated by a door, are also available. All rooms have a hair-dryer, television, telephone and refrigerator.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Kosta Mare was built in 1988 and enlarged and renovated in 2004. As a result, the style of the more recent buildings clashes with the original bungalows, which were designed in a style typical of homes along the Aegean coastline. The lobby of the main building is modern and stylishly furnished, whilst fitness facilities at the hotel include a gym, tennis court, 5-a-side football pitch, two outdoor freshwater swimming pools and one indoor pool. There is also a mini-club for 4 to 12-year-olds which consists of a hut and a surrounding playground.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The main restaurant, its tables covered with white cloths and bouquets of (artificial) flowers to add a touch of colour, serves all three meals of the day as a buffet, which you can enjoy in a cool setting with sea views. Fresh fruit juices are served with the American-style breakfast every morning, whilst Tuesday nights play host to an Asian or Cretan evening, grilled meats or fish dishes taking centre stage on Thursdays. The all-inclusive option includes one dinner a week in the à la carte restaurant, the theme here being Mediterranean cuisine. Coffee and cakes are served for tea from 4:00pm to 5:00pm at the snack bar.

    Spa

A small but well fitted out spa. A wide choice of treatments including: facial massages, vitamin treatments, body treatments with honey and chocolate, head massages, hair removal, manicures, etc. Hamman and Turkish bath.
A large swimming pool on the basement level with a few deckchairs to relax on after a swim. New, clean and well-designed treatment rooms.

    Beach 7.20 /10

Unlike the rather narrow stretches of sand on the surrounding beaches, this one is nice and wide, which means the hotel's sun loungers and parasols are not all cramped on top of each other. However, because of the mountainous nature of Crete, you will need to bring sandals with you to protect your feet from the rocky sections found on this beach and others on Crete. All the same, the beach is ideal for children, because the gentle gradient where the water begins makes a small lagoon of sorts. There is also a beach volleyball pitch and a small water sports centre that opens from June onwards and lends pedalos and canoes to guests at no additional cost, and if you like jet skis, banana boats or other motorised water sports, a club nearby offers these activities.

    To know

The Kosta Mare attracts a cosmopolitan clientele from France, Germany, Austria and Holland from April until the end of October. Since it opened its small spa in 2009, a massage and sauna session have been included in the hotel's all-inclusive option. For an extra charge you can also enjoy facial treatments, the hammam, and various different massages using chocolate, mud and seaweed. You will also have the chance to take part in Greek dancing at the weekly folk music night. The rest of the time, the hotel's entertainment team takes over.

Somewhere between a hacienda and a Cretan village you'll find the Chrissi Amoudia, a rustic complex which, although intensely big, isn't lacking in the charm department. The picturesque atmosphere of the Cretan village where the accommodation blocks are located is particularly appealing, though for a hotel of this standard the facilities are not really up to scratch. Located in Hersonissos, the trendiest spot on the island, this place is suitable for both families and thrill-seekers alike.

This hotel, in the centre of Hersonissos, does not live up to its promise of a luxury stay, and it is surrounded by an unattractive urban landscape. In short, the Hersonissos Palace, which offers both the half-board and the all-inclusive option, is in serious need of renovation work if it wishes to reclaim its luxury status.
