The Hellenic Palace is ideally located. Half-way between Agios Nikolaos, one of the liveliest cities of Crete, and Heraklion, the complex is built neat a small, typical fishermen village with the sweet name of Sissi. Count no more than 30 minutes to Heraklion airport.
Simplicity, sobriety, and austerity. Nothing very exciting in the rooms. However, a minimum comfort is provided, and the room is bright and clean. All 156 accommodations have a bathroom with hair dryer, direct telephone with international access, a safe (for a fee), a terrace or balcony. There are 32 quadruple family rooms with a double bed and bunk beds.
A vast and bright lobby opens onto a large patio overlooking the perfectly groomed gardens of the Hellenic Palace. The hotel's main asset is its environment. Indeed, the Hellenic Palace includes one single building, a cold and charmless two-storey construction. Fortunately, the sports amenities, green spaces and relaxing areas are of a better level.
The Hellenic Palace only has one restaurant. Local and international cuisine is of good quality and varied. Four times a week, theme evenings are organised. All meals are served in a large, bright, well-fitted room. Bay windows open onto the gardens and swimming pool. A large adjoining terrace allows guests to eat outside. Lastly, for half-boarders, there is a cafeteria between the swimming pool and the gardens, serving lunch.
The beach, equipped with parasols and deckchairs, is a small semi-circular cove lined on both sides by high rocks. The environment, between sea and mountain, is particularly pleasant, and the sand is of good quality. A small water sports club offers sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing for a fee.
Part of the rooms, as well as some of the common areas, were renovated in 2003. The Hellenic Palace is open from April to October. Guests are primarily French. The hotel has a strong, French-speaking, entertainment team. This is the ideal place for an active, family vacation and to discover Crete.

The Gouves Sea is a very peaceful hotel, ideally located at the centre of Crete for those who want to explore the island. There is no organised entertainment here, and only 70 guest rooms, which gives the place a real family feel. Moreover, some of the rooms have been renovated and are therefore more luxurious.
Somewhere between a hacienda and a Cretan village you'll find the Chrissi Amoudia, a rustic complex which, although intensely big, isn't lacking in the charm department. The picturesque atmosphere of the Cretan village where the accommodation blocks are located is particularly appealing, though for a hotel of this standard the facilities are not really up to scratch. Located in Hersonissos, the trendiest spot on the island, this place is suitable for both families and thrill-seekers alike.
A stone's throw away from the dynamic town of Hersonissos, the Serita Beach is an all-inclusive lively hotel club of average standards and children should enjoy the kitsch style and great big slides.
Don't be misled by the grand name of the Kosta Mare Palace & Spa: it is a basic, all-inclusive hotel which is well-maintained but certainly not luxurious. Its many facilities raise it to four-star status, but the setting is starkly lacking in character.
The Club Olé Golden Star evidently decided to focus on activities to be able to offer their guests a fun seaside holiday in a comfortable setting. Indeed, its location in one of the rare picturesque seaside villages of Crete is a real bonus and will not fail to satisfy the needs of families eager for a change of scenery.
The all-inclusive Mediterraneo hotel provides a seaside holiday away from the city centre, in an unsophisticated setting. Adequatey equipped, with rooms that offer decent comforts, the hotel nevertheless lacks too much character to make guests forget how far away the beach is (1,300 ft).
Good facilities, varied accommodation units, and only one real snag: the beach. Located around 12 mi from Heraklion, this hotel only offers the all-inclusive formula.
Perched up on the slopes in the outskirts of Hersonissos, Crete's nightlife capital, the Hersonissos Village makes the most of its position outside the noisy centre. Set in verdant surroundings and benefitting from superb panoramic views of the coast, what really impressed us about the establishment was the Cretan style of the guest rooms, especially in the older buildings. Bear in mind that there is no mini-club for children here. The proximity of the sea and (small) beaches makes this a sure but unextravagant holiday destination.
This comfortable hotel was designed as a charming Cretan village, with flowerbeds and several swimming pools. An upscale address worth the trip.
The Creta Maris is a large, refined hotel with a high standard of comfort. There are numerous swimming pools and facilities, as well as great food to enjoy in a stylish setting. It is ideally located within easy walking distance of Hersonissos, a lively town popular for its nightlife. Guests can choose one of three accommodation options - bed & breakfast, half-board or full-board.
The contemporary decor of this superb and recently renovated seafront hotel is particularly attractive, making it the ideal setting for a holiday surrounded by all the hallmarks of style. Thanks to its location overlooking the sea, guests can enjoy fine panoramic views, especially from the bar terrace. Its location in Hersonissos, Crete's nightlife capital, means there is a profusion of beachfront night club options to choose from.
The Alexander Beach is a comfortable hotel, designed as a small Cretan village. Refined decor, traditional architecture, and beautiful golden beach: a very pleasant setting for a great seaside vacation.
The Rinela Beach is an all-inclusive hotel which has managed to maintain a certain level of quality . It guarantees a fun-packed holiday for families, with its wide choice of restaurants and pools and numerous brightly-coloured pergolas.
A stone's throw from the centre of Hersonissos and its lively nightlife and with direct access to the sea, the Aquis Silva Beach Hotel is entirely dedicated to adults. Good facilities for this village-style, friendly and sporty hotel, but don't expect more from the spa than a small well-being centre.
The Stella Palace opened as recently as 2008 and it claims to offer a high level of comfort, though the layout of its rooms and their amenities are not exactly luxurious. In fact, the highlight of this brand new hotel is its two huge lagoon pools.
A modest hotel built in the middle of a pleasant park, peaceful and well-maintained. An ideal place for a family seaside vacation.
