Le fleuron de Melia in Cuba is the most beautiful hotel in Guardalavaca. Located on the edge of the beautiful beach of Playa Esmeralda, the Rio de Ora is more a luxurious hotel than a club.

    Location 4.21 /10

The Melia Rio de Oro is on the coast, on the Esmerelda beach in the national park of Naranjo. It is a 33 mile drive from Holguin and 44 miles from the airport. Those who come to Cuba to meet the locals and get the street atmosphere will be disappointed: Guardalavaca is a seaside resort far from the urban and cultural centre.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

Yellow and red, the rooms are painted in bright colours and have simple but elegant furniture. The decoration is well thought out: frescos and friezes on the wall, wooden borders, subdued lighting etc. The amenities are average level: Satellite TV, individual air conditioning, minibar (included), telephone. The bathrooms have an inside bath and an outside shower, located on a patio (private for the superior junior suites and common for the junior suites).

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built in 1998, the Melia Rio de Oro has a central building and 250 suites (junior, junior superior, suites and villas) in one or two storey bungalows in an immense park. Shuttles are available permanently for the customers.

    Food and drink 9.70 /10

Buffet restaurant, Creole cuisine restaurant, international cuisine, grill etc. There are 5 restaurants for the guests. They are well organised like in all the hotel clubs in Cuba. Nevertheless the Rio de Oro stands apart with the quality and quantity of the products. The setting in the restaurants is similar to the hotel: spacious and refined.

    Beach 7.45 /10

The beach is spread out with clear waters and fine white sand. Its disadvantage: during high tides the water draws back, leaving the rocks exposed. It doesn't look very nice and is not very practical for bathing. However, the hotel does have four small beautiful creeks, the Calecitas, a few minutes away on foot.

    To know

The Rio de Oro is a luxurious hotel-club, built and managed by the Sol Melia chain of hotels. It proposes all inclusive holidays with full board, drinks and snacks as well as a multitude of sports activities: tennis, cycling, archery, shooting, pool, ping-pong, darts, beach-volley, water activities (sailing, wind surfing, kayaking, snorkelling) and other entertainment. People who appreciate good cuisine should take note: the restaurant serves meals that will not be proposed in any other hotel clubs on the island.
