    Location 7.0 /10

The Island Shangri-La is at the heart of Central, the famous financial district on Hong Kong island. It is directly linked to the 'Pacific Mall' shopping centre, which is under the hotel. The hotel is not far from the entrance to go up to Peak (the greenest part of town!) and Hong Kong international airport is about 22 mi away. Watch out for traffic jams though, as these can easily double the journey time!

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

It is a real pleasure to open doors onto rooms as refined as these, adorned with silk! Indeed, most of the objects and fabrics here were made especially for the Shangri-La. The aim here was, once again, to recreate a classic European style but also incorporate hints of Chinese culture (e.g. the Chinese chest of drawers with the television on top). The bed sheets are the divine creation of the major Italian label Frette, and the chandeliers are crystal. The lighting has not been neglected either, with reading lamps, wall lights and many adjustable indirect lights to create the atmosphere that you want. The presence of mirrors also reflect the setting well. There are 531 rooms here which are divided into 7 categories, and 34 suites. The smallest room is 440 sq ft in size, but most of them measure about 470 sq ft. The main difference between the various rooms is the view and the different floors on which they are located. The 'Executive' rooms are to be found on the higher floors. The rooms are provided with a very comfortable 'chaise longue', a minibar containing a very refined selection of drinks (and crystal glasses in the suites to help you enjoy your drink even more), a Nespresso coffee machine, free Internet access, a large plasma screen television on the wall showing many channels (and films on request), a DVD player, a free safe, a telephone, quiet individual air conditioning, a Bose sound system, and so on. All the possible plug sockets imaginable can also be found on the desk. Thanks to the flat screen television built into the wall in the large and impressive marble-clad bathrooms, you can watch your favourite programme while you sit back and soak. The bathtub and shower are separate, and so is the toilet. There is also a hair-dryer, a magnifying mirror, and a large selection of hospitality products by Occitane (or Aqua di Parma in the suites), dressing gowns and slippers, etc. If you look above the headboards on the beds in the suites, you'll see some superb paintings. A delicious traditional tea is served when you arrive, and room service and a butler are both available 24 hours a day.

    Overview 9.90 /10

The Island Shangri-La is a very tall tower built in 1991 and fully renovated in 2004. Seen from above, it is shaped like an eye. The lines of bay windows up the sides of the modern building look out to Peak and over the harbour. The vast 3-floor hall is bathed in natural light, thanks to the large bay window. The spaces are decorated with marble, a thick floral-patterned carpet, wood panels, huge chandeliers and gilding. The hotel boasts a total of 772 chandeliers. The uniformed staff attend to your every need in the hotel's warm and cosy atmosphere. Glass lifts smoothly serve the many floors that can be admired as you travel up or down the building. The biggest silk painting in the world hangs in the atrium; the 16-floor image depicts paradise in the Shangri-La valley. Another one-off that you will see in this hotel is a magnificent library with a wide selection of books. Most of the hotel's restaurants are located between the 5th and the 8th floor, while the rooms occupy the 35th to the 55th floor. On the 8th floor there is an outdoor area with a 90 ft heated swimming pool and deckchairs aligned to one side of it. The green lung of the city, and the buildings of Central (including the Bank of China tower) can be seen from here. The round jacuzzi is surrounded by a bed of plants and you can relax in it while listening to music, as Ipods are available here. There is also a nearby restaurant on wooden decking which can seat up to 50 guests. The well-being area continues indoors, where there is a large and very well-equipped gym containing many top-of-the-range machines (treadmills are positioned in front of the bay windows). As for pampering, circles are a recurring theme in the small, cream-coloured, all-marble spa, which is divided into two sections, one for men and one for women. The views from the top of the tower over the surrounding area and Victoria Harbour are really worth a look.

    Food and drink 9.90 /10

The hotel is home to eight superb bars and restaurants whose cuisine has won prizes for its high quality on several occasions. You can enjoy afternoon tea with a delicious pastry on the lower ground floor, while perched up in the heights, the 'Petrus' gourmet restaurant serves up very sophisticated French cuisine orchestrated by the French chef Frédéric Chabet. The head waiter is also French. A strong European influence dominates the decor, with curtains hanging at the windows, breathtaking views over Kowloon island, pictures decorating the ceilings, columns crowned with Corinthian capitals, large armchairs and tables spaced comfortably apart. The menus are tailored according to the availability of seasonal produce (e.g. the menu based on black truffle) and various themes, for example dishes using the 'flambé' technique (Wagyu beef, crêpes Suzette, etc.). There is also plenty of choice for the vegetarian palate. A few of the mouth-watering options are blue Brittany lobster or rack of Aveyron lamb. It also goes without saying that French wines and famous vintages are well represented on the impressive wine list. Indeed, the cellar is one of the best stocked in Asia, with more than 10,000 bottles, including a selection on display behind a window where they can be kept at a constant temperature. The stars of the show include a Château Margaux, First Classified Growth (1924), and a 1928 château Petrus (a Magnum will set you back £27,000). Live piano music in the restaurant adds atmosphere every evening. There is also the magnificent Summer Palace which serves delicate Cantonese cuisine. Renovated in July 2008, it has brown silk butterflies woven on the walls interspersed with gold carved wood panelling, and small mirrors dotted around. As for the Nadaman, it is renowned - especially in Japan and China - for its Japanese dishes. Its intimate setting, with walls dividing the room into many different spaces, is a joy for fans of cuisine from the land of the rising sun. One room is devoted to teppanyaki, and the dark decor and prominence of wood throughout makes for a very sober and relaxing setting. Don't forget the ground-floor 'Lobster bar', which is split into two different atmospheres, with the added interest of two large aquariums. A live jazz group performs there too - every evening from Monday to Friday. Do not hesitate to ask for advice from the cocktail specialist (mixologist) if you cannot decide what to order in the impressive bar area!

    To know

Most of the guests at this hotel, in the heart of Hong Kong, are financiers and/or Chinese, and about 50% of them are returning customers. The hotel is so tall that you will feel like you are sleeping up in the stars. The rooms overlooking the harbour are the most expensive.

The Novotel Century is a highly modern and ideally located hotel on the island of Honk Kong, at the heart of all the hustle and bustle. The guests are mainly people on business trips who choose this hotel for its proximity to the business district and the many services on offer. Unfortunately though, the welcome is not the warmest and the staff are not always very friendly, which contributes to making this very stylish establishment a rather cold and impersonal place to stay.

The Kowloon is the place to stay if you really want to be at the heart of the frenetic 'Manhattan' of Asia. Despite its luxury, you should not expect to find extraordinary facilities in this functional but somewhat outdated hotel, which is surprising for Hong Kong, and its enormous capacity means that the communal areas feel rather like busy railway terminals. A special mention should go to the French chef here who prepares generous and delicious buffets.
