The Dusit Thani Hua Hin has everything of a luxury resort about it. It has a swimming pool, a spa, a gym and all the other facilities you would usually expect, along with stylish decor. The only weak points are the rather outdated appearance of the standard rooms, and the ponds beside the swimming pools, which could do with being spruced up a bit.

The Dusit Thani is in Hua Hin, a seaside resort 140 mi south of Bangkok. The journey takes about 4 hours by road. This seaside resort is especially suitable for people who prefer to do their travelling by road rather than by air. The hotel is a 15 minute-car ride from Hua Hin's main shopping streets.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The 296 rooms are spacious, (minimum size 390 sq ft), and they all have a terrace. However, the decor in the standard rooms is a little outdated. The suites have a large bathtub and parquet flooring, rather than the traditional fitted carpet. The rooms on the side of the building are recommended because they also have a sea view. In the rooms, a flat-screen television, a kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities, a safe, and all the standard services are provided. A lesser detail, but nevertheless one worth mentioning, is the indirect lighting which enables you to adjust the ambience in the bedrooms. Food lovers take note: Executive Club guests can eat and drink at any time of day for no extra charge in the 7th floor lounge; and, if you like seafood, there is a seaside restaurant which caters to just that (all guests).

    Overview 8.20 /10

The Dusit Thani Hua Hin resembles a luxury resort with luxury facilities. The all-marble entrance hall has a high ceiling and a plunging view over the Gulf of Thailand. It is absolutely massive, and could easily hold a skating rink or dance floor! A piece of advice: it's well worth asking reception which lift you need to take to get back to your room, or you could well find yourself lost in the maze of corridors. To wind down after all this excitement, head for the spa, where the softened lighting and pale walls contribute to a more 'Zen' atmosphere. The idea of the Devarana spa - or garden of paradise in Thai Sanskrit - is based on total relaxation, in contemporary decor with the lulling sound of classical music. All kinds of treatments are provided here, from the detox, post-party and jet lag massages to the famed Thai massages. As far as keeping fit is concerned, you will not be disappointed by the fully-equipped gym either, and of course there are swimming pools as well, to keep both adults and children happy.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

Half-board guests may take their meals in the Coffee Shop, which has pulled out all the stops: the decor is simply amazing for one thing; with the chandelier dominating the room, and, next to the copious and high quality buffet spread, you can admire the host of glass sculptures in all kinds of designs, set up on a marble base. So, is this the embodiment of Asian luxury?

    Beach 7.70 /10

Hua Hin beach is 2 mi long. The sand is fine and the sea is relatively warm and pleasant. The cleanliness of the water, however, can vary depending on the season and the tides. You sometimes need to walk miles to reach it, too, so come with plenty of patience! Owing to the somewhat anarchic organisation of the hotel buildings, the view from the beach is far from spectacular.

    To know

The hotel belongs to a chain of luxury Thai hotels set up in 1949. The chain now provides a transfer service between its various hotels in Hua Hin, Bangkok and Pattaya.
