Hotel Pousada Naturalia Hotel 4 star
Praia do Abraao 149 Ilha Grande Ilha Grande, Brazil
Amy Adejokun Section editor

You can stop looking, we've found paradise and it's here! Life is simple at the Pousada Naturalia, whose name doesn't lie; nature is the predominant element at this pousada where it surrounds you on all sides! You won't find any special facilities here: no swimming pool, spa, gym, or pool table. Instead, you will find just 12 charming guest rooms hidden away in lush vegetation, a reception area sheltered under a granite rock, and a lounge circled by rocks and waterfalls where you will eat your breakfast in the company of monkeys and hummingbirds. It is all truly delightful.

    Location 3.56 /10

This establishment is located on Ilha Grande, about 60m from the sea and a 15-minute walk from Abraâo, the only village on the island. Allow an hour by boat followed by 3 hours on the road to get to Rio airport.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

A dream catcher hangs on the entrance doorway to keep nightmares at bay, but surely you won't need it, as you will have nothing but the sweetest of dreams when staying somewhere like this! Once you are in your room, the first thing that will draw your attention is the wooden terrace and guardrail overlooking the tropical garden, with the sea in the distance. Settle into the hammock, close your eyes, and drift off to the sound of hummingbirds and monkeys. The terrace is also big enough for a table and 2 wooden chairs. The 22m² room is quite basic, with beige walls, no pictures, and no television. You really feel cut off from the rest of the world, and that is exactly what this place is all about. However, there is air conditioning with a ceiling fan, a small key-operated safe (free), a mini bar fridge, a telephone, and free Wifi Internet access. The small bathroom has a shower, toilet, and hospitality products.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The facilities consist of 12 guest rooms hidden away in 2 single-storey buildings set amidst granite rocks at the heart of a verdant tropical garden nearly 1,000m² in size. You may well feel like you have stumbled upon an Indiana Jones film set! There's no need for a swimming pool, as you have the biggest one in the world just 150m away! To dispel any lingering doubts that this is the jungle proper, just look around you at the hummingbirds, howler monkeys, and marmosets!

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

Breakfast is the only meal served at the Pousada Naturalia, from 8:00am to 10:00am, but it is delicious! Enjoy the delicious tropical fruits fresh from the garden (bananas, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, star fruits, etc.), homemade cake, and fresh local fruit juices in the company of hummingbirds. Even the bread is homemade! You could not start your day in a better place, surrounded by greenery under an open air wooden palapa, with granite rocks all around and sound effects provided by a little waterfall in the background.

    Beach 8.45 /10

A little path leads down from the pousada to the unspoilt beach some 60m away. In keeping with the spirit of Ilha Grande, there are no bars, shops, restaurants, deckchairs or parasols here, and the place is all the better for it! If you are looking for a shower, a natural waterfall gushing down the rocks does just the trick! The setting is heavenly: the forest-covered mountain comes down to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with the odd granite rock here and there. Once upon a time the island was used by pirates, and it would certainly provide the perfect backdrop for a treasure island-style adventure film!

    To know

The Pousada Naturalia is the brainchild of a Frenchman, Laurent, who built the place from scratch. He loves advising guests on how they can make the most of their holiday on Ilha Grande. In order to get there from Mangaratiba (30 mi north of Angra dos Reis), the boat waits until it is full enough of passengers before leaving. This means that during quiet times of the year, you might be stuck in the harbour all day long! On top of this, the crossing takes an hour and a half. You would be better off taking a motor schooner from Conceiçao de Jacarei in the direction of the town of Angra dos Reis. The journey from here takes just 40 minutes and there is a timetable of crossings (departures at 11:30am, 2:00pm, and 5:00pm). As there are no cars on Ilha Grande, be prepared to walk on the sandy village tracks or along the paths through the tropical forest. There are some steep climbs though: the island's highest point is almost 1000m above sea level! There is no post office, stamp shop, or cash dispenser on the island.
Laurent assured us there is no need for a guide to get around Ilha Grande, because the good signposts and well-marked paths - not things you often find in Brazil - mean you can stroll through the jungle all alone. The island is a massive playground, with underwater diving, swimming with sea turtles, boat trips around the archipelago, hiking trips into the tropical forest, and bathing in the crystal clear waters of the waterfalls and natural swimming pools. You count on Laurent to give you all the best tips. If you make it to the highest point on the island, 980m above sea level, you will have an amazing view of the bay of Angra dos Reis. Allow 3 hours for the ascent and 2 hours for the return journey. If you feel at all unwell during your stay, you can be treated at the Pousada with the medicinal plants growing in the garden! Wifi access is available throughout the establishment free of charge.
