A small family hotel, the Kalyves is liked very much for being so convivial and quiet, and because of its ideal location. The hotel faces the sea and enjoys a very pleasant and charming setting: in the heart of a small Cretan village surrounded by high mountains, along which flows a natural river down to its nearby estuary.

    Location 3.0 /10

Located by the seaside, the hotel stands in the centre of the small village of Kalyves. La Chanée is a 20 minute drive or approximately 11 mi away. Rethymnon is 30 mi away. Allow a 2 hour drive for transfers to and from Heraklion international airport, 90 mi away.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

The Kalyves Beach has 150 bedrooms, 100 of which are in the main building. A total of 18 bedrooms look out to the sea and 11 overlook the village. Their surface varies from 204.50 sq ft to 345.50 sq ft. They are generally all about 301.40 sq ft. We wish the balconies had not been so close to each other, and that the guests accommodated in the second building of the hotel weren't so visible. The accommodation is very simple with a small desk, shelves, a low and soft bed. The rooms are equipped also with a small TV set broadcasting 15 channels, a safe (£17.60 a week), air-conditioning, a refrigerator, a direct telephone line. The small bathroom, decorated all in white, has a shower and a hair-dryer. Soundproofing is inefficient.

    Overview 6.70 /10

One first hotel opened in 1995, then another building, adjacent to the first one was added in 2000. In 2003, a third one was built. Endowed with wooden balconies and 2 lifts, the white buildings are long, stretched out buildings, perpendicular to the beach. On three sides, tables and chairs, or else wooden deck chairs have been set up. The Kalyves benefits both from a seaside location in the heart of a small village surrounded by mountains, and from a natural river which flows all along the hotel and gives it character. An indoor swimming pool for the gym, some fitness apparatus and a whirlpool bath a little higher up: the place is a little outmoded, in particular because of the colour combinations. The small swimming pool on the hotel terrace before you reach the beach, the 2 boats (about a hundred years old) and the mill next to the swimming pool bar lend charm to the place. On the ground floor, you will notice two surprising palm trees incorporated to the main building because of the extension of the hotel. The conference hall has a capacity of 180 people.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotel has a restaurant for its guests, open from 7.30 to 9.30am, then from 6.30 to 8.30pm, as well as a small à la carte restaurant. It is possible to have lunch at the snack bar of the swimming pool and choose from the à la carte menu. There is a choice of Cretan specialities or international cuisine as well as menus suggested for children. Every night, 8 hot dishes (including one Cretan one) and three desserts are presented at the small buffet, of regular quality but which does not boast great variety in dishes.

    Beach 7.20 /10

The natural river that flows alongside the hotel is the opportunity for a cool swim, ideal for your health and the beauty of your skin. Those put off by the cool water coming down from the mountains can move further down and enjoy warmer water. Please note: a small dead-end street separates the hotel from the busy beach watched by a life guard. The slight slope is ideal for children; moreover, no stone comes to trouble the foreshore washed by clear water. Meals can be served at the beach: you will find menus on tables set up directly in the sand. All in all, the beach stretches over 3 mi. Water sports are available on Almyrida beach, 3 mi away.

    To know

The hotel is open from early April to the end of October. For most of the services offered, there is someone who speaks English More than a third of the guests are Scandinavian, then Greek, then French... The age group most represented ranges between 40 and 50 years old.
Once a month, the river is cleared of all its many weeds, so that the fish can breathe and ducks and geese can keep on living there. A lot of fish products with a "from Crete" label come from here because of the abundant water. Another major asset is the superb vegetation and numerous little villages around.

Accommodation tip: require a bedroom with a view of the sea as soon as you can (the price is the same)!
