The Nora Beach is a Thai hotel complex and it's hard to imagine that it could exist in any other country. Its main asset is without a doubt its interior decor, based on the Thai theme. From the Lanna-style pavilion boasting fine architectural qualities in which it welcomes its guests, to the bungalows dotted about a tropical garden, the Nora Beach has made the best of its assets, while remaining in an intermediate category. Seemingly designed to cater more for couples than families (hence the lack of facilities for children), the complex is located in the Northern part of Chaweng, which is a lot more tranquil and less crowded than the centre of Chaweng Beach.

    The complex is located to the North of Chaweng Beach. The centre of Chaweng is a 15-minute walk away along the beach. Expect the same time by taxi since the journey is not as direct. At only ten minutes away by taxi, the airport is very close.

    A shuttle service connecting the hotel to Chaweng Beach is provided. This is free during the day and costs less than £1 in the evening.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

    The Nora Resort includes 113 guest rooms spread across a 37-acre estate. This may sound huge, but the accommodation units are bunched closely together and only a few of them afford a sea view. The standard rooms occupy two larger buildings, whereas the bungalow villas occupy what space is left of the garden.

    Apart from the lack of space between the bungalows, this concept isn't bad. Each 'villa' is independent and has its own private entrance and tiny courtyard. The central space is occupied by a large room decorated in an Asian style, which is welcoming but couldn't really be described as luxurious because of the poor quality of its furniture. The best part of the villas is probably the bathroom, with their large windows that look out onto a private courtyard, an outdoor shower and a polished bathtub.

    The nicest villas are those in the superior category, the Ocean pool front villas, which each have their own private swimming pool and a jacuzzi, as well as a sea view which can be admired from the bedrooms. We loved the 'sala', a kind of small private Thai bench facing the ocean.

    The Nora Beach Resort & Spa opened in 2004 and occupied a 22-acre estate. It's run by locals and therefore follows the architectural style of the country. The reception area welcomes its guests under a Thai-style wooden structure (with a traditional pointy roof). A fresh and pleasant breeze circulates in the corridors between the different floors. Although the architecture is traditional, there are a few details that indicate that it belongs to an intermediate category. The furniture is not exactly luxurious, but everything is carefully done; it's exactly what one expects from this type of establishment.

    Once you're past the reception area, you start to make your way downwards: the Nora was built on a hillside that slopes down from the street towards the sea. After you've made your way past several bungalows that all look the same (which can be quite confusing), you'll arrive by the sea, where you'll find the swimming pool, the restaurant and the beach. Everything has been designed in the same style, with wood used in abundance.
    We particularly liked the round swimming pool with views of the sea and surrounded nice wooden deckchairs, which are a lot nicer-looking than the plastic ones.

    The establishment's small spa is also located on the seafront. Rather simple and including some outdoor spaces, this place is soon to be reorganised. The treatment rooms will instead be enclosed, which is a shame since this means that guests will no longer be able to enjoy the sea breeze, but this was the only way of preventing the invasion of mosquitoes when the sun sets.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

    Two restaurants share the same room, although the term "room" may seem inappropriate since the tables are outdoors, by the beach, and are partially protected by a wooden pavilion. The Prasuthon offers traditional Thai cuisine, whereas the Manora serves international dishes.

    It goes without saying that we'd strongly recommend you sample the recipes by the chef at the Prasuthon. The first reason being that this is Thailand and there's no sense in ordering a plate of pasta, as it will probably be overcooked. The second reason is that the Prasuthon serves very good food, since the chef has managed to preserve traditional flavours and hasn't succumbed to the temptation of westernising his cuisine. Pad Thai, tom yam, fried beef with basil: a classic choice with authentic flavours.

    The lovely breakfast served here is varied and consists of different specialties. What a great start to the day!

    A piece of advice: there aren't that many tables right on the seafront and it's therefore a good idea to make a reservation in the evening if you want to get a good seat.

    The Nora Resort is located in the northern part of Chawen and has its own, beautiful beach. However, in the area beside the swimming pool, levees have had to be built to stop the incoming tide. Wooden deckchairs have been set out around the swimming pool, but unfortunately this bright initiative was not extended to the beach, where you'll find only plastic chairs, unfortunately...

      The New Star Beach Resort is an establishment designed for families or people travelling on a tight budget. However, it enjoys a nice seaside location and underwent a relatively satisfactory renovation in 2007, making it an altogether average establishment, neither particularly pretty nor ugly.       Once inside reception at the X2 Resort, you get the feeling of being in another world. You will find yourself in an open structure where design is key and where wood is the dominant feature, with cement flooring and no signs of Thaï architecture. The effect is really pleasant. Spacious, boasting refined and modern lines, the X2 Resort does not go unnoticed. This hotel opened in 2008 but salt has already starting to corrode the building, and it shows.
