Amy Adejokun Section editor

Not far from Lamai, the Renaissance is one of the luxurious establishments owned by the international Marriott brand, bathing in elegance and distinction. Admittedly, this is a classy hotel, and that's despite the fact that due to its American origins, the reception area is a mixture of all the stereotypes that Westerners entertain about Thailand. With its fountain decorated with flowers, its pointy roof and its little wooden statues of monkeys, no stereotype has been spared! Surprisingly enough, these different elements come together to create some degree of harmony. The Renaissance is located in a sprawling estate, and has everything you might expect from this kind of establishment, which we believe is a good thing. The Thai chef who runs the Thai restaurant here constitutes another of the hotel's advantages, since he's one of the best there is.

    Location 4.43 /10

The establishment is not far from the village of Lamai. The taxi ride to Samui airport takes about half an hour, and Chaweng Beach is about 15 minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The accommodation units are spread throughout the complex. The newer-looking building that rather resembles a school building houses the deluxe and standard rooms. They are carefully aligned and all feature the same layout, size and level of comfort. As is often the case with internationally-owned hotels, the rooms are all similar and quite satisfactory, but totally nondescript. However, some of their features we particularly liked include the outdoor bathtub on their small private balcony, and their long and narrow bathroom. However, don't expect any spectacular views of the sea from these rooms.

The area of the hotel that faces the beach is altogether different. It includes the garden pool villas and the beach front villas, which are small, individual ochre-red cottages, boasting elegant dark wood furniture. Although some details could be improved (some of the worn-out fabrics used here could do with being replaced), others are quite pleasant, such as the bay window that opens onto a large courtyard and its private swimming pool. The icing on the cake is that in the beach front villas, this courtyard/pool area, albeit small, affords a beach view.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Having opened its doors in 2005, the Renaissance is divided into two buildings, connected by a footbridge on either side of the reception area, which is decorated in a rather stereotypically Thai style.

The main section of the estate stretches out towards the sea: a large tropical garden is home to the more luxurious rooms, the main restaurant, the spa and the swimming pool, which is built on several levels cascading down towards the sea. The vegetation is dotted here and there with ochre-red cement constructions that house the various communal areas. The setting is rather pleasant, although you might get the impression that you're on a movie set - an impression instilled all the more by the presence of imitations of Balinese statues and the pseudo-Khmer temples of the outdoor spa.

The standard rooms occupy a completely independent building which is also accessible via the footbridge, which fortunately avoids crossing the road. Originally, this was a separate hotel, but it was bought and completely renovated by the Marriott chain in order to expand the complex. This is a rather basic section of the hotel and rather resembles a school building, with its outdoor stairways and square corridors. However, it did have two features that we particularly appreciated:
    >The natural tunnel formed by rose-bearing liana that leads to the swimming pool.
    >The Olympic-size, long and narrow swimming pool where you can swim laps and keep fit. Additionally, this building is set quite far away from the communal areas and is therefore secluded.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The complex includes three restaurants, one of which you definitely should not miss: the Banana Leaf, the Tawann (which means 'sun' in Thai) and the tapas restaurant. The second serves western cuisine for dinner only, and the third only serves snacks.

The Banana Leaf was our favourite. This is the main restaurant where breakfast is served, and where lunch and dinner are a celebration of Thai cuisine. Without wanting to dwell on the interest of tasting local food during your stay in Thailand rather than the western dishes that can be eaten every day at home, suffice it to say that the Banana Leaf is simply an excellent restaurant where we were provided with the opportunity to taste incredibly refined dishes. Both the chef and his assistant are Thai, and together, they prepare, present, and give the final touches to dishes that boast authentic flavours that will make your taste buds go wild. Red curry chicken, chicken kebab in satay sauce, vegetables fried in a wok, sticky rice and mango with coconut... You'll find many of the more classic dishes here, but you'll never cease to be amazed by how tasty everything is. The hotel is worth the visit just for its gastronomy, and so we'd strongly recommend this restaurant even if you're not staying at the Renaissance! The only snag is the room's decor, which could do with being more original and more stylish. On the other hand, you'll probably be too concentrated on your food to care about the setting.

    Beach 7.70 /10

You will probably be in two minds about the beach. The first impression you have of it will be positive when you see its fine white sand and the turquoise-blue sea of the Gulf of Thailand surrounded by smooth rocks that resemble the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks of Lamai and provide some privacy. The second is not quite so positive: although the scenery is beautiful, the beach suffers from a real lack of space , and if all of the hotel's guests decided to visit the beach at the same time, there just wouldn't be enough room.

    To know

This hotel complex is popular among honeymooners and an essentially Japanese and Korean clientele. What is more, the hotel can also arrange for ceremonies and other events to be held on the beach.

This complex, nestled in one of Lamai Beach's bays, is defined by its elegant simplicity. The warm tone of the wood and the green bamboo are the dominant features, making for a calm and very oriental setting. You will have already gathered that this is a luxury establishment. Calm and tranquillity are the key features of this discrete hotel, and it's beginning to attract a very loyal clientele.

Located along Chaweng Beach, the Muang Samui is a nice boutique hotel. It has a beautiful garden with luxurious vegetation which surrounds all its premises. The place is mainly advantageous for couples rather than families, since it has no structures to accommodate children. However, the hotel offers an on-demand baby-sitting service.

The New Star Beach Resort is an establishment designed for families or people travelling on a tight budget. However, it enjoys a nice seaside location and underwent a relatively satisfactory renovation in 2007, making it an altogether average establishment, neither particularly pretty nor ugly. One of its assets is that it has a nice beach of fine sand, in the purest Chaweng style. Unfortunately, we felt that there were too many bungalows in the resort.
