The Sala Samui Resort & Spa is an establishment that caters to a well-targeted clientèle. Without being particularly luxurious nor original, it's not entirely devoid of elegance and charm either. It features a slightly artificial Asian touch, and a good level of comfort. In short, it's in between two categories: it will please those who like simplicity, but will seem boring to others.

    Location 5.18 /10

    In the northern part of Samui, on North Choeng Mon Beach, the hotel is only 2 mi from the airport (expect a 10-minute drive). Chaweng Beach is at least 20 minutes away by car.

    Accommodation 8.30 /10

    With 70 rooms, this is a medium-sized resort, but it has varied offerings with 7 types of room. The style and atmosphere is quite consistent and the difference between categories resides mainly in size and location. It should also be mentioned that the rooms are truly the resort's stronger point. They occupy little units arranged in neat little rows in the garden.

    They're decorated in a typlically Thai style, with an abundant use of wood, pure lines and good lighting. The rooms in the deluxe balcony standard category don't afford a sea view, but they look out onto the tropical garden. Our favourite area is the bathroom, which is a semi-open space, decorated in neutral cream-tones, located between the balcony and the room. It's both refreshing and relaxing.

    The garden pool villas on the ground floor of these small buildings have the added comfort of a private garden and a small pool. Here again we were impressed by the bathroom.

    One category higher, but still without a sea view, you have the 'sala pool villas', which come in the form of little villas with a private entrance. Guests are greeted in a courtyard with a swimming pool. All the different areas are entirely open so as to be enjoyed from the inside and the outside alike. The only drawback is that they don't offer a view.

    The Sala Resort & Spa opened in 2004 and stands out for its rooms. Once past the open reception area, you have to cross the garden before you arrive at the common areas that surround the swimming pool. The accommodation units and the spa, with its pleasant wood-coloured tones, are to be found in the garden. The spa bathes in a Zen atmosphere with soothing music. Asian massages are on offer: Thai, with oil, with warm stones...

    Beyond the garden and accommodation units lies the beach, where you'll find the common areas. There are two swimming pools, one black and the other white, facing the sea: one is for relaxation and the other is for fun and games. Resorts that provide certain facilities for guests who want to relax are always much appreciated, although in this case, the two swimming pools are right next to each other: there's always a bit of noise...
    We particularly liked the wooden veranda, where you can have your massage next to a fountain surrounded by water lilies.

    Food and drink 6.30 /10

    The establishment has two restaurants between the swimming pool and the beach. The first serves international cuisine with salads, pizza, hamburgers, pasta and Thai specialties. A theme dinner is put on every evening. The second restaurant focuses on pizza and Italian cuisine.

    Beach 7.50 /10

    The beach of the resort is not particularly big and it is shared with other establishments. The ambience is pleasant. It features deckchairs in the sand, and a swimming pool just behind the beach, with cushions and mattresses. Early risers will enjoy one of the two available armchairs: these are clearly provided in insufficient numbers to satisfy all of the hotel's guests.

    Located in the northern part of the island, the Sala Resort is closer to the Fisherman Village than it is to Chaweng beach, for those who're after some nightlife.

      Not far from Lamai, the Renaissance is one of the luxurious establishments owned by the international Marriott brand, bathing in elegance and distinction. Admittedly, this is a classy hotel, and that's despite the fact that due to its American origins, the reception area is a mixture of all the stereotypes that Westerners entertain about Thailand. With its fountain decorated with flowers, its pointy roof and its little wooden statues of monkeys, no stereotype has been spared! Surprisingly enough, these different elements come together to create some degree of harmony. The Renaissance is located in a sprawling estate, and has everything you might expect from this kind of establishment, which we believe is a good thing. The Thai chef who runs the Thai restaurant here constitutes another of the hotel's advantages, since he's one of the best there is.
